A Leap Second

I don’t know if you realized it, but this week each of us had an extra second added. It was actually called a “leap second.” Apparently, the earth slows just a bit and in order to make up for this, a leap second is added. Since 2000, only four leap seconds have been added. The earth isn’t slowing all that much I’d say.

So on Tuesday, June 30, 2015, an extra second was added to the clock. An extra second was added to our day.

While it may not seem like it was nearly enough to do anything, there really are things you can do in a second.

  • Blink
  • Jump
  • Smile
  • Laugh
  • Take a deep breath
  • Do a quick stretch

What did you do with that extra second? To be honest, probably nothing. Maybe you watched it on television as the second ticked by. Maybe you were completely oblivious to the fact that there was an extra second. And to be really honest, it’s a second. Do any of the things on the above list make a difference? Probably not.

But there are a few things that might make a real difference. Take a look at this list of things that can be done in a second.

  • Say “I love you”
  • Make eye contact with someone who could use encouragement
  • Be grateful for something

With this extra second, there were some meaningful things you could have done. And here’s the good news. You still have that extra second to do something meaningful with.

And when we add up those extra seconds in our lives, we might be able to do something really meaningful.

Take a look at 2 Peter 1:5-8 from the New International Reader’s Version. It says, “So you should try very hard to add goodness to your faith. To goodness, add knowledge. To knowledge, add the ability to control yourselves. To the ability to control yourselves, add the strength to keep going. To the strength to keep going, add godliness. To godliness, add kindness to believers. And to kindness to believers, add love. You should possess more and more of those good points. They will make you useful and fruitful as you get to know our Lord Jesus Christ better.”

Maybe this is a stretch, but when we add up all the seconds in our lives, this is just a little bit of what we can do with those seconds. We can love. Love our family. Love our neighbor. Love our enemy. Love.

So as we add up those seconds in our lives, let’s use these seconds for good. God’s good. Let’s be useful and fruitful. Don’t let a second go by without love.

Grace and peace be yours in abundance,

Donna
