May Day

Today is the first day of May! Happy May Day! With this celebration of spring, you may or may not have access to a May Pole. If not, there’s still plenty of reason and opportunity to dance and praise God on this beautiful day. Today is a reminder of new life. New life on our planet, as well as new life in Christ.

I must admit, it’s not the best day for me. Mom has been in the hospital since Tuesday night. These are the times I find it most difficult to be away from my family. So, I’ve determined to do what I can do from 1,500 miles away. Pray for and encourage her from this distance.

So today, I am offering words of encouragement to my Mom through my blog. Perhaps you are in need of this same encouragement. If so, I pray that God’s Words will fill your heart with hope, healing and refreshment. I pray that God’s grace will provide the strength you need to make it through this day. Blessings to you!

“Z” – Blogging A to Z

We’ve arrived. It’s the last day of April and the final posting about the alphabet. It’s been a great journey for me and I now will look forward to April 2016 with great enthusiasm.

zAs I complete this A to Z challenge, let’s look at the letter ‘”z” and see what God has in store for us. Ms. Marquez’s last idea for boosting happiness and energizing your attitude, she tells us a little snooze might just do the trick. Yes, you’ve guessed it. Z-z-z-z-z. “Studies show that you’re happier on days after you’ve slept well than on days after you’ve slept poorly. And naps deliver a restorative effect that can turn a bad day good.”[i]

So let’s talk about some of our biblical friends who fell asleep and if this idea fit with how their day wound up after their nap.

Adam (Genesis 2:18-25)

If you know this Bible story, you remember that God placed Adam in a deep sleep. While under the effect of this sleep, God removed a rib from Adam and created the first woman, Eve to be Adam’s helpmate.

I would imagine this was the best nap ever. Adam was the only human before the nap and when he woke, there was the woman God specifically made for him. Yes, I think this definitely was a happiness booster!

King Saul (1 Samuel 26)

Saul had taken a dislike to David and wanted him dead. In his pursuit, Saul slept with his guards all around him. As he lay sleeping, David walked into camp, took Saul’s spear and water jug and left without being noticed. David spared Saul’s life and in return asked for the pursuit to stop.

I believe at this moment, King Saul was grateful to David for sparing his life. And because of this one kind act on David’s part, Saul must have been relieved and thankful that he was able to live another day. Another energized attitude for sure.

Jesus (Mark 4:35-41)

During this massive storm, the disciples find Jesus sleeping in the stern of the ship. These seasoned sailors were terrified and wondered how Jesus could possibly sleep instead of caring for the souls aboard this small vessel.

Awakened by his faithless followers, I don’t believe Jesus was feeling particularly good after this sleep. He had to calm nerves and waves. Well, maybe He calmed waves. Scripture tells us the disciples were amazed and fearful.

Lazarus (John 11:1-44)

Lazarus got sick. Lazarus died. Jesus said that Lazarus had “fallen asleep.” Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead. The glory of God was revealed.

I wonder what Lazarus thought during those final moments of life. Did he question Jesus’ actions as Mary and Martha did? Were his thoughts about heaven and the Kingdom of God? I don’t know, but what I do know is that Lazarus obeyed Jesus’ voice and was alive again. What a good day that must have been!

Disciples (Matthew 26:36-46)

You know this story well. After a wonderful week of celebrations, teaching, intimate moments and prayer, Jesus and His disciples went to the Garden of Gethsemane. There, Jesus asked them to pray with Him. The problem was, it was the middle of the night. These followers just couldn’t keep their eyes open. Three times the Lord found them sleeping. Three times He asked them to pray with Him. And then, it was over.

I’m sure if the disciples knew for sure what was going to happen that night and over the next few days that they would have stayed awake. They would have fought harder to listen to what Jesus had to say. But instead, they fell asleep. It really wasn’t a good night for them.

Eutychus (Acts 20:7-12)

Paul was speaking to a group of believers and because he was going away the next day, he spoke through the night. Scripture says he talked on and on. There was so much to say and very little time. As the night went on, Eutychus fell into a deep sleep, fell out of a third story window and died. Heartbroken, Paul performed a miracle and brought Eutychus back to life.

Can you imagine how this young man must have felt when he opened his eyes? He must have woke up during the fall and knew it was end for him. I might venture to guess that he was feeling pretty energized after this experience. It was a good day (or should I say night) for Eutychus!

Here are six stories about falling asleep. But what I really have to ask is are you asleep spiritually? Are you one of the walking dead (not the TV show)? What do you need to do to boost spiritual life of yours?

I pray that you are listening to the Master’s voice. That when you hear Him you obey His words and look to be restored to abundant life through Jesus. Don’t let another day go by without seeking the One who can give real meaning to your life. Wake up!

Grace and peace be yours in abundance,

“Y” – Blogging A to Z

I’m sure you will relate to the happiness booster connected to the letter “y.” This attitude energizer has been around for quite a while…perhaps not in the form of YouTube, but certainly in the form of little video snippets that make us laugh or smile.

yMs. Marquez suggests that when we indulge in watching funny videos, we laugh. Laughter can give you a “rush of feel-good endorphins and reduce stress hormones, helping to relax almost instantly.”[i]

So maybe you haven’t sat and watched YouTube, but you’ve spent a few minutes each week watching a funny video on Facebook. And just to remind you, America’s Funniest Videos has been on the air since 1989! If nothing else, this shows that we love to laugh!

Why? Because it makes us feel good.

Regardless of where you get your funny video habit suppressed (YouTube is good because it begins with the letter “y”), you watch and laugh and you feel better. Perhaps even glad.

So how does this relate to our spiritual life? Well let’s see from Scripture what should make us glad, happy and perhaps even laugh.

  • We should be glad because we have refuge in God (Psalm 5:11)
  • Singing praise to God should make us glad (Psalm 9:2)
  • Being in God’s presence should make us glad (Psalm 21:6)
  • Because God sees us in our anguish and affliction, we should be glad (Psalm 31:7)
  • We are glad when we are right with God (Psalm 32:11)
  • Those who seek God are glad (Psalm 40:16)
  • Thinking of the city of God, we are glad (Psalm 46:4)
  • Restoration brings gladness (Psalm 53:6)
  • We know gladness when we experience God’s satisfying love (Psalm 90:14)
  • God’s deeds make us glad (Psalm 92:4)
  • As we worship God, we enter into gladness (Psalm 100:2)

Obviously these are verses from the Book of Psalms. But I found one more passage that I’d like to share with you.

Ecclesiastes 5:19-20 (NIV) says this. “When God gives any man wealth and possessions, and enables him to enjoy them, to accept his lot and be happy in his work—this is a gift of God. He seldom reflects on the days of his life, because God keeps him occupied with gladness of heart.”

What occupies your heart? Disappointment? Sadness? Grief? Bitterness? Greed? Something else? I understand this verse as saying that when we are content with what we’ve been given in life, our hearts will be filled with gladness. When we know where all of our possessions come from (God), then we are able to be happy with what we have and then the outcome is a glad heart.

There is a lot in this world that vies for the attention of our heart. But only God is able to make our hearts rejoice and be glad. I pray that you will come to know this gladness. I pray that you will seek the One who is able to give you unimaginable gladness. I pray that your heart is filled with God’s gladness. It’s only in that place where you will find true contentment. Joy. Happiness. Rejoicing. Gladness.

YouTube has nothing compared to what God can offer.

Grace and peace be yours in abundance,

Donna

“X” – Blogging A to Z

How are you feeling this morning? Is your attitude energized? Has your happiness been boosted? I pray that these days through the month of April have helped. There certainly have been plenty of good ideas to improve your outlook on life.

xToday is no different. Here’s yet one more way to figure out how to get through this day with a smile. Today, the letter “x” stand for x-press yourself. In this article I’ve been using, Ms. Marquez says that when we “pick up a pen or a paintbrush and let loose, expressing yourself creatively can reduce fatigue and even depression.”[i]

I love this idea…I really thought she was going to tell us to x-ercise. Now you realize that is a good booster as well right? But this being creative thing really x-cites me. And what I really love is when my creative side touches my spiritual side.

For instance, the Ukrainian Eggs I have made in the past represent new life in Christ. Eggs are presented to friends and family on Resurrection Sunday with the phrase, “Christ is Risen!” The symbols and colors on each egg represent something religious as well. The crown of thorns, purity, eternal life, hope, tears of Mary and many more.

Recently, I have enjoyed praying while I color. This has helped me to focus on a specific person, event or even a verse of Scripture. Most recently, I spent a morning praying for my neighbors and neighborhood. I used a coloring sheet with lots of houses on it and prayed specifically for those around me. It’s a great way for creativity to intertwine with my spiritual world.

Of course, writing is my favorite way to x-press myself. I have often wondered what I did before Full Measure of Joy. I must have wasted an awful lot of time! This little blog of mine has given me more opportunity to share what Jesus has done in my life than anything I’ve done. I’m so thankful to have this outlet. It makes me very happy!

It’s no wonder we are creatures of creativity. Our heavenly Father is the greatest Creator and He is able to x-press Himself in quite beautiful and elaborate ways. He spoke the world, universe and mankind into being. In a six-day period, all that we encounter on a daily basis was brought into existence. And what a beauty! My Colorado Rocky Mountains have been gorgeous lately with the new snow fall!

What does creation do in return? Psalm 148 tells us that creation praises God. That is why everything (including us) was created. To praise God! As a fearfully and beautifully created being, we are to use our creativity to praise God throughout our days.

So how can you x-press yourself to God today? What do you need to tell Him? What do you need to thank Him for? How can you praise God? I can guarantee a little worship with your Lord and Savior will do wonders for your spirit today. Don’t miss this opportunity to x-press yourself.

Grace and peace be yours in abundance,

Donna

“W” – Blogging A to Z

Just a few more letters and we’ll have gone through the entire alphabet working to boost our happiness and energize our attitudes. Today we are going to take a look at the letter “w.”

wFor the letter “w,” Ms. Marquez suggests that we have some wine. Here’s the thing. There is a history of alcoholism in my family. I have seen first-hand what alcohol can do to a person and the damage that can be done to relationships. So I’m going to nix this one.

Instead of “wine,” I’m going to suggest that we can energize our attitude if we stop “whining.”

Unfortunately, we are a bunch of whiners. From the beginning, God dealt with complainers and grumblers. And what did our biblical friends complain about? Well, just about everything!

From the work load, to the food, to the lack of water, to the lack of abilities, to you name it, they whined about it.

But here’s the thing. In Numbers 11, the Hebrew nation complained to God about their hardships. This passage tells us that God’s anger was aroused. What does that tell you about God? He doesn’t like whiners.

There are multiple verses of Scripture that help us to understand that we are not to be whiners. Take a look.

From Galatians 5:19-21 (NIV), we find that whining will lead to acts of the sinful nature. Like “sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like.” When we aren’t happy, we don’t want to be alone in our whining. We will find others to take along with us. Dissensions and factions have no place in our Christian walk.

Philippians 2:14 (NIV) tells us to “Do everything without complaining or arguing.” Um, that says EVERYTHING.

And here’s another thought. “Don’t grumble against each other, brothers, or you will be judged. The Judge is standing at the door!” (James 5:9 – NIV) Who is listening to your grumbling? The Judge Himself! He’s right outside your door, so stop whining!

Do you whine about offering hospitality to another? Apparently Peter’s audience felt the need to whine, for he mentions it in 1 Peter 4:9 (NIV). “Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling.” I’m reminded of Mary and Martha. Martha whined to Jesus about having to be hospitable and Mary not helping out. What a scene that must have been.

So how can we get out of the habit of whining? I believe we find a good solution from the Book of Isaiah. Take a look.

“And finally this, God’s Message for the family of Jacob, the same God who redeemed Abraham: ‘No longer will Jacob hang his head in shame, no longer grow gaunt and pale with waiting. For he’s going to see his children, my personal gift to him—lots of children. And these children will honor me by living holy lives. In holy worship they’ll honor the Holy One of Jacob and stand in holy awe of the God of Israel. Those who got off-track will get back on-track, and complainers and whiners learn gratitude.’” (Isaiah 29:22-24 – The Message)

Did you catch it? When we learn to be grateful, when our hearts are filled with gratitude, there is no room for whining.

What have you been whining about lately? Why? What are you grateful for? Have you allowed that gratitude to surface and overflow into other areas of your life? Friend, if your heart needs an attitude adjustment, turn to Psalm 33. Spend some time with God and allow yourself to be reminded of what He has done for you. I believe in the end you will be able to say these words.

“We wait in hope for the Lord; he is our help and our shield. In him our hearts rejoice, for we trust in his holy name. May your unfailing love rest upon us, O Lord, even as we put our hope in you.” (Psalm 33:20-22 – NIV)

Now, let’s stop our whining!

Grace and peace be yours in abundance,

Donna
