Today is February 29, 2012. It\u2019s been four years since we had this \u201cextra\u201d day. Leap year as we call it. This is a day that holds \u201cextra\u201d meaning for me. On this date in 1896, my grandfather was born. He was also a twin. The two of them were \u201cextra\u201d special in many ways.<\/span> <\/p>\n

<\/div>\n
This past weekend, I had \u201cextra\u201d time with my granddaughter, Joy. I explained to her that we were getting an \u201cextra\u201d day this year. That February usually has 28 days, but this year, and, every four years, February has 29 days.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
After the conversation, I realized that her preschool teachers probably had big plans to celebrate the day and learn about its significance. I could hear her words when asked what she learned at school that day. \u201cNothing that I didn\u2019t already know.\u201d Sorry Miss Sandy and Miss Lisa. Oh the life of a pre-schooler (in need of being in Kindergarten)!<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
We all have this \u201cextra\u201d day. I guess the question that\u2019s begging to be asked is, \u201cWhat are you going to do with this \u2018extra\u2019 day?\u201d Will it be like any other day? Will you celebrate the day? Or will you look for \u201cextra\u201d ways to live a Godly life? Here are a few ideas:<\/span><\/div>\n

  • Read an \u201cextra\u201d chapter (or two or three) in the Bible<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Spend an \u201cextra\u201d 15 minutes (or half hour) with God<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Love on your family a little \u201cextra\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Share your Jesus story with someone<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Volunteer at a local food bank or shelter<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Catch up on unfinished projects<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Try something new and unexpected <\/span><\/li>\n
  • Renew an old friendship<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Write a poem<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    2 Peter 1:5-8 from the New International Reader\u2019s Version says, \u201cSo you should try very hard to add<\/b> goodness to your faith. To goodness, add knowledge. To knowledge, add the ability to control yourselves. To the ability to control yourselves, add the strength to keep going. To the strength to keep going, add godliness. To godliness, add kindness to believers. And to kindness to believers, add love. You should possess more and more<\/b> of those good points. They will make you useful and fruitful<\/b> as you get to know our Lord Jesus Christ better.\u201d<\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    More and more of these good characteristics. \u201cExtra.\u201d This is how we should view this \u201cextra\u201d day. When we try very hard to add these qualities to our lives. And the purpose? To be useful and fruitful on this \u201cextra\u201d day.<\/span><\/div>\n

    Don\u2019t let this \u201cextra\u201d day go to waste. Use it for good. God\u2019s good. I know it is \u201cnothing that you didn\u2019t already know!\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n
