A Fruit Salad

I remember a lot of things about my grandparents. Some are deeply touching, while other memories bring a smile to my face or cause me to laugh. One thing I recall about Grandpa Rich is when he would help out in the kitchen. His job was to prepare fruit salad for our large family gatherings.

Daytona Beach 014mI don’t know that I ever ate any of the fruit salad my grandfather made. You see, I am not a fruit lover. I really don’t know why. It’s not like fruit makes me ill. Or that I completely dislike the taste of fruit. If I have to eat fruit, I will eat it. But when there are plenty of other choices, I’ll chose something else.

I’m not a fruit lover. Jesus, however, is all about fruit.

In John 15:1-17, Jesus dedicated an entire portion of teaching to fruit. In His teaching on the Vine and the Branches, Jesus mentioned nine times that we are to bear and produce fruit. Jesus also mentioned eleven times in this passage that the only way to do so is to remain in Him.

“If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit.” (John 15:5 – NIV) Only through Jesus can we bear fruit. And only through Jesus can we produce a great harvest of fruit and fruit that will last.

In another teaching segment, Jesus spoke again of fruit. He mentioned in Matthew 7:20 (NIV), that good and bad are recognized by their fruit. “By their fruit you will recognize them.” When we bear good fruit by remaining in Jesus, others will know that we belong to Jesus by our fruit.

So, what fruit are we to produce?

Fruit of Repentance

“Produce fruit in keeping with repentance.” (Matthew 3:8 – NIV)

Fruit of our Attitudes

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.” (Galatians 5:22-23 – NIV)

Fruit of the Light

“For the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth.” (Ephesians 5:9 – NIV)

Fruit of Righteousness

“This is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may discern what is best and may be pure and blameless until the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ—to the glory and praise of God.” (Philippians 1:9-11 – NIV)

Fruit of our Deeds

“And we pray this in order that you may please him in every way; bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, and joyfully giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the kingdom of light.” (Colossians 1:10-12 – NIV)

Fruit of our Lips

“Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise—the fruit of lips that confess his name.” (Hebrews 13:15 – NIV)

Fruit of Wisdom

“But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere.” (James 3:17 – NIV)

I may not like the fruit of this world, but I certainly love the fruit of God. My desire is to bear fruit so that others might see God through me. The only way for that to occur is when I remain in Jesus and allow God’s Spirit to do His powerful work in me.

I don’t have to be a gardener (good thing because I kill plants). I don’t have to be a botanist (good thing because I’m not good at science). I don’t have to like fruit (good thing because I don’t).

I simply must know Jesus and let Him do the work. My heart and my mind must be open to the change He desires within me. When that happens, a great harvest of fruit will be produced and others will see Jesus through me. They will know that I belong to Him.

Isn’t it exciting? It can be the same for you too. If you haven’t given your life to Jesus, this is the perfect day to do so. The difference Jesus can make in your life is amazing. Why not accept Him today?

As a Christian, you know the difference Jesus has made in your life. But how is your fruit harvest coming along? If your fruit crop seems a little skimpy, get in touch with Jesus. Remember, if you remain in Him you WILL produce fruit.

I’m thankful for the fruit Jesus produces in me. I pray that you can say the same thing.

Alleluia!

I’ve been working through an advent calendar this year that I created. On each day, there is a word related to the anticipation in celebrating the birth of Jesus. Today’s word is alleluia.

DSC03927I began my day with searching for this word in Scripture. Nothing in my New International Version Bible. I moved on to my New Living Translation and it shows this word is only found in the King James Version in Revelation 19:1; 19:3; 19:4 and 19:6. I went to Bible Gateway and yes, found that this is the only place alleluia is found.

So then I thought I’d try hallelujah. Perhaps that would bring more results. The NIV points me to the same verses above and indeed, the word hallelujah is there.

I wondered why we equate the word alleluia with Christmas and the best answer is that “The Hallelujah Chorus” from Handel’s Messiah was the reason. We are touched when we hear this majestic melody and are moved to honor Jesus through this piece.

Alleluia or hallelujah literally means “praise the Lord” in Hebrew. So while these words do not appear as frequently as I thought, their translation is scattered through Scripture.

Some of my favorite passages are:

“And the Levites—Jeshua, Kadmiel, Bani, Hashabneiah, Sherebiah, Hodiah, Shebaniah, and Pethahiah—said: ‘Stand up and praise the Lord your God, who is from everlasting to everlasting. Blessed be your glorious name, and may it be exalted above all blessing and praise.’” (Nehemiah 9:5 – NIV)

“Let this be written for a future generation, that a people not yet created may praise the Lord.” (Psalm 102:18 – NIV)

“Praise the Lord, my soul; all my inmost being, praise his holy name.” (Psalm 103:1 – NIV)

“Praise the Lord. Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever.” (Psalm 106:1 – NIV)

“Let everything that has breath praise the Lord. Praise the Lord.” (Psalm 150: 6 – NIV)

In each of these passages, you can replace “praise the Lord” with alleluia or hallelujah. “Alleluia, my soul.” “Let everything that has breath alleluia.”

Now you may have already known this. I knew what alleluia meant, I just didn’t realize that word isn’t in our Bibles. I learn something new every day!

Today as I think about this word “alleluia,” I will be reminded to praise the Lord. Praise Him in all circumstances, at all times. Alleluia will be on my heart and lips today.

What about you? Are you able to praise the Lord today? To believe in your soul that God is good? Are you willing to stand up and praise the Lord today? Are you counted among the people of a future generation who has been called to praise the Lord? I pray that you are.

As I recall the Christmas story, there were many who praised God for the gift of His Beloved Son. Zechariah, Mary, Joseph, the shepherds, the wise men, the angels. Praise flowed from their lips and hearts for the salvation God sent to this world.

Let’s not forget in the busyness of this season to praise the Lord in word and deed. Alleluia!

Without Fear

As I read through the Christmas story once again, I’m struck by the fear that our biblical friends encountered. I suspect I would have been afraid if I were in the presence of an angel as well. But in each case, the angel said, “Do not be afraid.”

DSCN0060I’ve been afraid and as an adult I’ve faced fear. Fear of terrorist attacks. A loved one dealing with serious illness. The death of someone I don’t know how to live without. Unemployment.

Perhaps you are facing a fearful situation of your own. If so, I want you to know that God knew how fear would creep into our lives. And in His all-knowing way, God offers some words of encouragement.

It’s hard to say how many times “fear not” or its equivalent can be found in Scripture, but there are over 100 references on this topic. God knew fear would be an issue for us and He gave us plenty of material to guide us through each step of fear.

On multiple occasions, Joshua was told not be afraid and trust God. He was told to be strong and courageous. God gave Joshua all he needed. Including confidence to go forward and win the battle.

Perhaps you are asking yourself, “Can I trust and have confidence that God is going to lead me into my own battle and that I can go without fear?” Please know that the answer is yes! God is right by your side in each battle. If I hadn’t experienced this personally, I could not be so confident.

David found himself fearful on occasion and in Psalm 34 he expresses his plan for overcoming fear. “I sought the Lord, and he answered me; he delivered me from all my fears.” (Psalm 34:4 – NIV)

David also gives encouragement with his words in Psalm 27:1 (NIV). “The Lord is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life—of whom shall I be afraid?” What do we have to fear? Only fear itself.

With God on our side and His Holy Spirit within us, we can live lives where fear cannot cripple us. We can live strong and courageous lives.

So what is my plan for conquering fear? I spend time in God’s Word. I listen to what He has to say to me about it. I spend time in conversation with God. I tell Him about my fears. What is truly making me anxious about the situation and release those fears to Him. Then again, I listen to what He has to say.

If you are fearful today, take heart, if you have cried out to God, He has heard you. But I would encourage you take action. I’ve listed the Scripture reference to every passage with the words “do not be afraid.” Why not take the time to read through these verses?

If you tend to be an anxious person, why not read one of these verses every day? When you’ve completed the list, start again.

I’ll be honest. Sometimes it takes more than one time to put these fears aside, but at the end of the day, I know that God is with me and because of that, “I can do all things through Him who gives me strength.” (Philippians 4:13 – NIV)

“O Come, All Ye Faithful” – Monday Musical Musings

As children, my girls loved to sing. They would sing anything and everything. Our day-to-day routines were placed to music. Oh yes, we lived in a musical world.

0005030206R-849x565Christmas was especially wonderful for them. They would sing Christmas carols from sun up to sun down. They would fall asleep under twinkling lights in their beds with Christmas music playing in the background. They loved Christmas carols.

One of their favorite Christmas hymns was “O Come, All Ye Faithful.” As a matter of fact, the only time they sang a special in church was this song. I was a proud mama in that moment.

Each time I hear this melody, I think of my girls. I’m blessed that God has allowed us to remain close and even become friends through the years. I do miss the musical world we lived in.

I also love this Christmas carol because of what it calls us to do in our Christian walk. In our praise to God, we are to remain faithful. We are to be joyful through our days. And we are to live victorious lives. Jesus has allowed for us to live in such a manner and because of His sacrifice, we should do so.

I know however, that this world has put a damper on our joyous song. There is ugliness beyond words. There is disease, inhumanities, and sadness. All of these issues creep into our lives and we sometimes just don’t feel like being joyful and triumphant.

But just like the author of this Christmas tune, I’ve come to know that praise is the cure for our crushed spirits. When we allow our hearts to adore the precious Lamb of glory, we want to remain faithful, to be filled with joy and to walk through our day in victory.

I pray that if you are struggling with the nature of our world that you will come and adore Jesus today. Sing with the heavenly hosts and give glory to God for each victory you receive. Come with me to praise God for the precious gift He shared many years ago. Come, let us adore Jesus!

“O Come, All Ye Faithful”

O come, all ye faithful,
Joyful and triumphant,
O come ye, O come ye to Bethlehem.
Come and behold Him,
Born the King of Angels!

O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him,
Christ the Lord.

Sing, choirs of angels,
Sing in exultation;
O sing, all ye bright hosts of heav’n above!
Glory to God,
All glory in the highest!

O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him,
Christ the Lord.

Yea, Lord, we greet Thee,
Born this happy morning;
Jesus, to Thee be the glory giv’n;
Word of the Father,
Now in the flesh appearing,

O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him,
Christ the Lord.[i]
