The “Hood”

When my husband and I first married, he lived here in Colorado while I lived in Ohio for 18 months. In those 18 months, we spent a lot of time in communication through email, web cams, and telephone conversations.

neighborhoodsWe talked a lot while he was on his way home from work and each day as he neared the house, he would stop to get the mail. On a few occasions he would try to explain these strange mail boxes that held a couple dozen smaller boxes for individuals. I could not understand it.

You see, I had never lived anywhere where the mailbox was not attached to the house or at the road at the end of your driveway. It wasn’t until my first visit to Colorado was I able to understand the mailbox clusters he had described over and over to me.

Now, I’m accustomed to not seeing my mail carrier or my neighbors.

It seems to me that our little neighborhoods with mailbox clusters and three car garages have removed the “love your neighbor” element from our lives. How sad.

Just last night after dark, our doorbell rang and my husband made his way to the front door. Before he even reached the door, a young woman began speaking. She apologized for bothering us. It was our next door neighbor. She was distraught. Her sister had gone missing.

I immediately went outside and spent a few moments with this young gal. I comforted her. I hugged her. I cried with her. I told her to let me know if there was anything they might need. I felt helpless.

She apologized for bothering us.

How messed up our society is when we feel like we can’t ask a neighbor for a favor. Or share a problem. Or simply get to know one another.

What I do know is that Jesus asked us to be a light in our neighborhoods and to be a source of hope for those who have none. Jesus asked, no He commanded us to love our neighbors as we’d like to be loved.

We miss so much in our little neighborhoods. My neighbors didn’t know my grandson died. Only a handful knew of the death of Pat next door. I don’t know what’s happening with the young family across the road. So, I applaud my neighbor who asked for help. She stepped out of her comfort zone and broke the code of conduct in our little world.

I don’t have all the answers, but I do know what Jesus said about loving our neighbors. Regardless of who they are, what they believe, or what nationality they are we are to love them. Where there is hurt, we are to give assistance. Where there is discord, we are to offer peace. Where there are grievances, we are to forgive. Where there is hate and bitterness, we are to love.

If you haven’t read the Parable of the Good Samaritan in a while, perhaps this is the perfect day to do so (Luke 10:25-37).

Please keep my neighbors in your prayers today. Pray that their daughter will be found safe. Pray that she will return with an open heart to go back on her medication. Pray for peace in the hearts of those who are waiting for her return. But above all, pray that they will see Jesus through me.

Grace and peace be yours in abundance,

“My Heart is Yours” – Monday Musical Musings

Last Thursday and Friday I was able to attend my first Willow Creek Global Leadership Summit. What an amazing two days! I’ve been to a lot of conventions and conferences in my lifetime. I am rejuvenated. I am refreshed. I am revitalized.

IMAG1492One of the wonderful elements to conventions and conferences is the music. I am drawn to a good praise song that leads me to the feet of Jesus. I love surrendering my life to Jesus’ hands through uplifting lyrics. I enjoy glimpsing the heart of a songwriter through their music.

I must say, this conference did not disappoint in the music department. We sang some worship tunes and there were a few special numbers that were amazing. And each time the music started, we were led a little closer to Jesus. Now, isn’t that what it’s really all about?

One song we joined together to sing was from Passion earlier this year. “My Heart is Yours” offers Jesus the part of us that we tend to harden or close off. It’s the part of us that has been hurt. It’s the part of us that can be tenderer than we want others to know. It’s the part of us that when Jesus gets hold of He is able to do some remarkable things.

So today, let’s offer our hearts to Jesus. Let’s see what He wants to do with it. Let’s surrender the hurt, the hardening, the burdens that we enclose within that little place we call our heart. Let’s trust that Jesus will use us in ways we never believed possible. Let’s give Jesus our hearts.

“My Heart is Yours”

I give You my life
I give You my trust
Jesus
You are my God
You are enough
Jesus

My heart is Yours
My heart is Yours
Take it all
Take it all
My life in Your hands

I lay down my life
And take up my cross
Jesus
For You are my God
Whatever the cost
Jesus
For You, Jesus

All to Jesus I surrender
All to You I freely give
I will ever love and trust You
In Your presence I will live[i]

You’ll want to listen to this song today, so click here to do so!

Grace and peace be yours in abundance,

Here I am to Worship

Another beautiful Sunday morning has arrived. For the first time in weeks, the mountains have no haze or clouds covering their majesty. It is a gorgeous site!

I was thinking this morning of the unique situations I’ve been where I’ve drawn closer to God through worship. I’ve worshiped in a small chapel on a mountainside. I’ve blessed the Lord in a multi-country, multi-religion, multi-worship style church in SE Asia. I’ve praised the Lord with family on the Gulf Coast. I’ve even worshiped God in a preschool as my Mom played a perfectly pink piano; gerbils were running on their wheels, walls plastered with alphabet and cartoons (this is a blog post in itself).

It doesn’t matter where we worship or who we worship with, what matters is where our heart is. What matters is to whom we are being drawn. When our attention is focused on God, we are in a worshipful place.

Have you worshiped God in a unique place? Tell me about it. I’d love to hear your story.

We are up to the letter “E” in my blogging from A to Z challenge. Enjoy!

Eagles – Blogging from A to Z

Eagles 050On Sunday afternoon, we were sitting out front of our home watching the grandkids ride their bikes. This is one of my favorite things to do because I know the weather is getting warmer and soon it will be summer and because it reminds me of how quickly time flies. My grandchildren are growing far too quickly!

We saw another amazing sight as we sat there however that took us all by surprise. Above us, just at house height, one American Bald Eagle flew by. And before we could really comprehend what we had just seen, another one flew along the same path. Two American Bald Eagles within seconds of one another. Of course, it was far too fast for anyone to pull a camera out to take a shot. But the image is in my mind. And it was very cool!

Since we’ve lived in Colorado, we have been able to see this great animal on several occasions. On one of those occasions, there were a large number of Bald Eagles in one location. My husband was able to take some great shots of these animals during this sighting and they are some of my favorite photos he’s ever taken.

These majestic animals are only found in North America and are the United States of America’s national bird. In 1782, the Bald Eagle was chosen as the emblem for America. Many symbols in America contain an image of the Bald Eagle and many artists have combined a Bald Eagle with our American Flag.

Bald Eagles can range in size from 30 to 37 inches with a wingspan from 72 to 90 inches. Their average weight is 10 to 14 pounds. Their eyesight is at least four times better than a person with perfect vision. Their beak has a hook at the tip that is used for tearing its food. And with their talons, they are a formidable foe. They are able to lift about 4 pounds and are a powerful and aggressive bird.

There are instances in Scripture where an eagle is mentioned. Some are in relation to Israel’s eating regulations. Eagles were strictly forbidden due to their unclean nature (Leviticus 11:13; and Deuteronomy 14:12).

On some occasions, eagles are used to show how other nations would swoop down and attack Israel (Deuteronomy 28:49; Job 9:26; Jeremiah 48:40; Jeremiah 49:22; Hosea 8:1; and Habakkuk 1:8).

Then we also see eagles represent swiftness (2 Samuel 1:23; Jeremiah 4:13; and Lamentations 4:19).

Several passages speak of the eagles great wings and how it related to past and future events (Ezekiel 17:3; Ezekiel 17:7; Revelation 12:14).

Ezekiel, Daniel and John captured visions that included great eagles. They each represent power (Ezekiel 1:10; Ezekiel 10:14; Daniel 7:4; Revelation 4:7).

I believe however, that two passages where an eagle is mentioned will be more familiar to you than any I’ve mentioned so far. In these passages, we see an eagle in relation to renewed strength.

“Praise the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits—

Who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases,

Who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion,

Who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.” (Psalm 103:2-5 – NIV)

“But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” (Isaiah 40:31 – NIV)

Perhaps you are running on empty today. If so, God is there waiting to renew your spirit and strength. He is able to lift you up so that you may soar.

You can see from these verses that God is able to do many things for us besides renewing our strength however. God forgives. God heals. God redeems. God crowns. God satisfies.

And what are we to do to receive these blessings? Praise the Lord. Don’t forget all the benefits we have in God. Hope in the Lord.

As we build our lives on this hope in God, all of those many blessings mentioned earlier are available to us. I am thankful to say that I have placed my hope in God.

Have you?

Why not take this moment to give your life over to God? Why not accept the benefits He is willing to share with you? Why not soar like an eagle? Please let me know if you have any questions. I’d be happy to help you in this process.

Eagles continue to amaze me. My eyes are always on the lookout for these majestic birds. I pray that I will never grow tired of watching for an eagle or take for granted that I’ve seen too many in my lifetime. I pray also that I never take God’s precious gifts for granted.

Peaches!

Palisade peaches are notably some of the best fruit. If you don’t believe me, just take a look at what is written about them on Grand Junction, Colorado’s website.

peaches“Locals will tell you Palisade peaches are the best, simply because they’re ripe, sweet and loaded with chin-dripping juice. The Grand Valley’s hot days and cool nights are perfect for bringing out the natural sugars in the peaches and growing big fruit. In comparison, peaches from other areas, such as California, seem invariably dry, mealy and tart because they must be picked green to survive traveling and won’t develop any more sugar once they are picked.”

When my husband mentioned that we could purchase some of these delectable beauties from a gentleman at work, we decided to buy more than one or two of these little gems. We bought 10 pounds.

They arrived yesterday and when I opened the box I was stunned. They are HUGE! The smell is divine. As the advertisement above suggests, they are ripe and I suspect, juicy. We’ll see as I begin to work with them later today.

Perhaps you need a little reminder today that like these peaches, God has designed you with a purpose in mind. For peaches, they are to be eaten. For you, there are greater plans in the work.

I was reminded of Ephesians 2:10 yesterday in an extremely creative way. God created each of us on purpose. Not one of us is a mistake. Not one of us was a slip-up or blunder. No, God created you and me on purpose.

And not only has God created us on purpose, but He created us for a purpose. Maybe you don’t know what that purpose is yet, but God does. He has a plan and you are part of it.

“For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” (Ephesians 2:10 – NIV)

Take a look at this same verse from The Voice. “For we are the product of His hand, heaven’s poetry etched on lives, created in the Anointed, Jesus, to accomplish good works God arranged long ago.”

And one more from the Amplified Version. “For we are God’s [own] handiwork (His workmanship), recreated in Christ Jesus, [born anew] that we may do those good works which God predestined (planned beforehand) for us [taking paths which He prepared ahead of time], that we should walk in them [living the good life which He prearranged and made ready for us to live].”

God has created us on purpose for a purpose. You have no reason to ever doubt that.

You may feel however, that you haven’t reached your full potential yet, God has that covered too. Philippians 1:6 (NIV) tells you and me that “he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”

I have no idea what I will create with the beautiful peaches sitting in my kitchen this morning. I’m sure it will involve some jam, perhaps a peach cobbler, or even peach shortcake. What I do know is that these peaches were created for a purpose. To be eaten and enjoyed.

Keep in mind as you go through your day today that you too were created for a purpose. Our lives are not to be wasted. I pray that God will reveal His purpose to you today and that you will thank Him for creating you just the way you are.

Grace and peace be yours in abundance,

Life!

My mind is on overload. I attended the Global Leader Summit yesterday and will join the group again today. Leaders from all walks of life from all over the globe have gathered together to be encouraged by a few outstanding leaders of our day. What an amazing conference.

0626091024So I’d like to share a few quotes (or ideas) from yesterday’s sessions that I believe will make a difference in my life.

“The grander the vision, the bigger the price tag.” –Bill Hybels

“What you are is God’s gift to you. What you become is your gift to God.” –Carly Fiorina

“What’s in your suitcase and why did you put it there?” –Susan Cain

“There are 2,350 verses of Scripture that talk about God’s heart for orphans, widows, the poor and aliens.” –Bryan Loritts

“I’m tired of hearing ‘servant leadership’ because there is no other kind.” –Patrick Lencioni

To be honest, there were more impressive words spoken yesterday, but each speaker shared so much information there was no way to get it all on paper. Some of these quotes may not be word-for-word, but these are the ideas.

How blessed we are to have a book filled with inspiring words by our leader, Jesus. If I don’t recall a specific thread of words, I can search the Bible to find it. So let me give you a few quotes for us to remember as we go through our day from Jesus. These I know I’ll get right!

“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.” (Matthew 5:6 – NIV)

“Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:44 – NIV)

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28 – NIV)

“If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.” (Matthew 16:24 – NIV)

“Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.” (Mark 16:15-16 – NIV)

“Father, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come. Give us each day our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who sins against us. And lead us not into temptation.” (Luke 11:2-4 – NIV)

“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” (Luke 12:34 – NIV)

“The Spirit gives life the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you are spirit and they are life.” (John 6:63 – NIV)

“Feed my sheep.” (John 21:17 – NIV)

We may not always be able to quote Jesus word-for-word, but as we spend time in the Bible, we find that God’s Spirit reminds us of the ideas and words we’ve read. The Holy Spirit will help us to locate and even quote these precious words.

I pray that as you head out into your day that you are able to recall the words of Jesus that you have read or studied. Keep them close to your heart. Allow Jesus’ words to transform. And as you have opportunity, speak them. They are life!

Grace and peace be yours in abundance,

Donna
