The Lord is My…

We have managed to arrive into the busy season of the year. Holidays and guests and travel and meal preparations and family and work and activities and anything else you can think to add to this list.

Yes, busyness seems to go hand-in-hand with November and December. And for me, I just want this period of time to slow down so that I can enjoy it.

jesus_shepherd

So before it gets too hectic, I want to share a version of the twenty-third Psalm that I want to read occasionally through these two months. While this author has taken some liberties with the literal translation of the passage, there are some word combinations that speak very clearly to me.

But most of all, it offers an alternative for living through these busy months. I can either allow my schedule to be run by me, or I can allow the Lord to be my pace setter. When I give God the throne of my heart, when He is in control, suddenly the busyness of my days become manageable. I am able to slow down and enjoy all that He so willingly points out to me.

I’m not saying that we should use this version of Psalm 23 to replace the original version. God’s version is so beautiful and it definitely has value in my life. But this alternate version spoke loudly to me. And this is what it says.

If I am too busy, I will miss the opportunities God has prepared in advance for me. I will miss people. I will miss connections. I will miss God.

So today, read through Psalm 23 from my New International Version and then Toki Miyashina’s version. Maybe, just maybe, a few of her words will speak to your heart as well.

“The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.

He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he restores my soul.

He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies.

You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.

Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.” (Psalm 23:1-6 – NIV)

The Lord is my Pace Setter

The Lord is my pace setter…I shall not rush.

He makes me stop for quiet intervals.

He provides me with images of stillness which restore my serenity.

He leads me in the way of efficiency through calmness of mind and his guidance is peace.

Even though I have a great many things to accomplish each day, I will not fret, for his presence is here.

His timelessness, his all importance will keep me in balance.

He prepares refreshment and renewal in the midst of my activity by anointing my mind with his oils of tranquility.

My cup of joyous energy overflows.

Truly harmony and effectiveness shall be the fruits of my hours for I shall walk in the pace of my Lord and dwell in his house forever.[i]

I pray that through these busy months you’ll find all that God has to offer you. I pray that your eyes would be open to see the joy placed before you. I pray that your heart would be softened to the needs of those around you. I pray that your energy level would continue to be boosted throughout these busy times. I pray that your body would remain healthy.

But most of all, I pray that you won’t neglect your time with God. Allow Him to be your pace setter. And just wait for the benefits He will lavish upon you.

Grace and peace be yours in abundance,

Donna

“The Mission” – Monday Musical Musings

This song brought back so many memories for me. As I heard Steve Green’s voice again, my heart was stirred. I was reminded of the time period and the message his music brought to my young world.

0005030206R-849x565Not only was this Steve Green’s message, it is also God’s message. It is what we as Christians are to be doing. We are called to follow Christ and then we are to share the message with others. As we travel on this journey we are to do a few things.

We must learn. We must live holy lives. We must be devoted. We must proclaim. We must serve. We must be diligent. We must be single-minded. We must share God’s message. We must make disciples.

It doesn’t matter where we are (across the street or around the world), this is how we are to live.

This particular song wasn’t radical for its day, but I recall the difference this song made in my life. It brought to my mind a responsibility on my part to my part for God’s Kingdom. And that is what so many songs have done through my life. Pointed me to God and helped me to see what I needed to do to make my relationship with Him a little sweeter.

So today, take a look at Steve Green’s song, “The Mission.” See if it might not make an impact on your life as it did mine.

There’s a call going out
Across the land in every nation
A call to those who swear allegiance to the cross of Christ
A call to true humility, to live our lives responsibly
To deepen our devotion to the cross at any price

Let us then be sober, moving only in the Spirit
As aliens and strangers in a hostile foreign land
The message we’re proclaiming is repentance and forgiveness
The offer of salvation to a dying race of man

Chorus:
To love the Lord our God
Is the heartbeat of our mission
The spring from which our service overflows
Across the street
Or around the world
The mission’s still the same
Proclaim and live the Truth
In Jesus’ name

As a candle is consumed by the passion of the flame
Spilling light unsparingly throughout a darkened room
Let us burn to know Him deeper
Then our service flaming bright
Will radiate his passions
And blaze with holy light

(Chorus)[i]

We have a mission. How are you fulfilling this mission? What steps are you taking to prepare yourself for this mission? Do you understand the urgency of this mission? Does the heartbeat of this mission (to love the Lord our God) compel you to proclaim and live His truth?

Perhaps these are difficult questions for you today. But if they are, please understand that this is possible with God. When we allow Him to be the heartbeat, our desire grows and deepens and is fueled by His Spirit to lead us in fulfilling this mission.

You may be called to fulfill this mission within your home or your neighborhood or within your city or across the world. All that God asks of you is to have a willing heart and spirit and He will prepare the way.

I’m thankful for artists like Steve Green who have accepted God’s call to fulfill the mission. I pray that as you go throughout your day that you will find this passion to live the mission set before us.

“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” (Matthew 28:19-20 – NIV)

Grace and peace be yours in abundance,

Donna

Cup in Hand

Do you feel a bit sluggish this morning? I know that’s how I’m feeling.

But it’s Sunday morning! I want to be wide awake to experience all that God has in store for me today! So let’s get moving! Time to get this body and soul awake!

The coffee will do for my body, but my soul needs a different remedy. It needs an awakening from God’s Spirit. One of my favorite songs is titled, “Awake my Soul.”[i] That is exactly what I need today. For God’s Spirit to awaken my soul to be prepared for what He wants to do within me.

So this morning, that is my prayer. Awake my soul!

Chapter 7 of the doll house is what you’ll be reading today. Task is not all that dissimilar to what God’s Spirit does in our lives. Taking bits and pieces to create something beautiful. I pray you’ll allow God’s Spirit to His work in you today.

Building a Doll House: Work – Chapter 7

As my husband I continued work on the doll house for our granddaughter, Joy, it became obvious that there would be some work involved. I have pictures to prove it!

Some of the work was tedious. Some seemed ridiculous. Sometimes there were multiple steps involved to get the final product. And sometimes, I simply had to wait. Yes, there was work involved.

Joy's Dollhouse Assembly 033mEvery piece of the dollhouse had to be put together, but only after being painted. Their suggestion was to use a sponge to apply the paint. It didn’t work. Instead, I used a faithful, proven friend. A small paintbrush and painted each piece.

For the windows, I practiced putting them together a few times with pieces flying all over, until I got the hang of it. Then glue was placed in the corners and a rubber band carefully drawn around the window frame. The windows came out perfect!

Joy's Dollhouse Assembly 036mThe house has not one, but two wrap around porches. There are railings along each porch and those railings had to be painted and glued together. Each spindle was painted, sanded, and then painted again before they could be glued into place. Thank goodness there was a template for this step!

The roof is covered with shingles. Before they could be placed on the roof, the shingles soaked in stain. Then they were spread out on a piece of cardboard to dry. Two or three times each day I had to “stir” the shingles to allow complete and uniform drying.

After waiting for the shingles to dry, the tedious process of gluing shingles on, one at a time began. I learned quickly that I could only stand the slow process for short periods of time, so I would set a goal of at least finishing three rows of shingles before giving up. This took days. Actually I think it took a couple of weeks.

Joy's Dollhouse Assembly 042mAs I neared the last few rows, I counted shingles. I originally stained approximately 1,150 shingles. It wasn’t enough. I was going to be 3 shingles short! By checking at this point, I was able to “piece” together these few shingles from trimmed shingles and I placed them throughout the last few rows. It actually isn’t noticeable.

It’s no different with our spiritual lives. There are times that it just plain takes work. It may be tedious, involved, slow, and we may have to wait, but in the end, our lives are put together perfectly by the Creator.

I’ve memorized some Scripture this year. Some to prove that I could actually do it. Some for a Vacation Bible School skit I was involved with. But what I learned was that it is difficult for me. It is tedious work. I have to repeat it over and over. Write it over and over. But in the end, I know that those verses or passages are in my head and my heart.

Joy's Dollhouse Assembly 045mAnd if that’s what it takes for me to memorize God’s Word, then yes, I must do it. Psalm 119:11 (NIV) reminds me of King David’s words. “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.” Hiding Scripture in my heart keeps me on the right path. God’s path.

And if the memorizing of Scripture does not change me, then I might as well be memorizing a dictionary. God’s Word is active and living and when it gets into our hearts, it will require something of us.

Our spiritual journey will require us to take multiple steps to maturity. In 2 Peter 1:5-8 (NIV), Peter shares a progression to escape the corruption of the world and participate in the divine nature. “For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love. For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Yes it is involved. Yes there are multiple steps. But the end product is so worth it! Wouldn’t we each like to be effective? Productive? If the answer is yes, then these are the steps to take. Maybe it isn’t as difficult as you first thought.

Sometimes we wait. Wait for our hearts to be softened. Wait for our hearts to be broken. And when that happens, the Holy Spirit can work through us in wondrous, exciting ways.

The Spirit of Truth will counsel (John 14:16); remind us of all we’ve learned (John 14:26); guide us into all truth (John 16:13); help in our weakness (Romans 8:26); intercede for us when we don’t know what to pray (Romans 8:26-27); and encourage (Acts 9:31).

The accomplishments are limitless with God’s Spirit at work in us.

Even though the dollhouse was a large, looming task that required a great deal of work, in the end it was truly worth every moment spent on it.

It is the same with our spiritual journey. Perhaps it seems like you’ll never be able to reach the goal. Perhaps you’re wondering if God could ever love you because of your past (or even your present situation).

Just know that any effort on your part is overshadowed by the grace that God is willing to lavish upon you. Don’t underestimate all that God has in store for you and your life.

In the end, it is worth it all.

Grace and peace be yours in abundance,

Donna

Gracious Father

Do you ever get in a rut? You know, do the same thing. Say the same thing. Recall the same things.

Last year, a dear friend noted the beginning of public prayers by those she was with the most. I happened to be one of those people. She noted that I always started my prayers with “Gracious Father.” It’s true. I do. And to be honest, it’s a habit. It’s the familiar words that flow from my lips.

prayerNow I don’t think they are the worst words to open my prayer time with God, but I believe that by offering this same greeting to God my Father each time, it does loose some of the meaning behind these kind words.

So I thought today I would point out some the graciousness of my heavenly Father and what it means in my life so that when I say these words, they aren’t just rote, rehearsed words.

Nehemiah mentioned God’s graciousness when recalling Israel’s rebellion. “They refused to listen and failed to remember the miracles you performed among them. They became stiff-necked and in their rebellion appointed a leader to return to their slavery. But you are a forgiving God, gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love. Therefore you did not desert them.” (Nehemiah 9:17 – NIV)

I, like Israel, have rebelled against God. But because of His graciousness, He has never deserted me. He’s continued to draw me back to Himself. What a wonderful reason to call Him gracious!

And yet another from the Old Testament. Isaiah speaks of God’s longing to be gracious toward mankind. “The Lord longs to be gracious to you; he rises to show you compassion. For the Lord is a God of justice. Blessed are all who wait for him!” (Isaiah 30:18 – NIV) What wonderful words to cling to.

In the New Testament, we find many examples of why we should call God gracious. Take a look at these passages.

“The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.” (John 1:14 – NIV)

“This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.” (Romans 3:22-24 – NIV)

“By the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace to me was not without effect. No, I worked harder than all of them—yet not I, but the grace of God that was with me.” (1 Corinthians 15:10 – NIV)

“All this is for your benefit, so that the grace that is reaching more and more people may cause thanksgiving to overflow to the glory of God.” (2 Corinthians 4:15 – NIV)

“My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” (2 Corinthians 12:9 – NIV)

“In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace that he lavished on us with all wisdom and understanding.” (Ephesians 1:7-8 – NIV)

“May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and by his grace gave us eternal encouragement and good hope, encourage your hearts and strengthen you in every good deed and word.” (2 Thessalonians 2:16-17 – NIV)

“But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: ‘God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.’” (James 4:6 – NIV)

There are many more references to God’s grace and graciousness in His Word, but these are enough to remind me that my words cannot simply be words. I must continually be reminded that I am blessed because of His graciousness. I must praise God for all He’s done in my life and I must call out to my Gracious Father with words of sincerity.

Today I thank God for all the gifts He has lavished upon me. I pray that you will be blessed by His graciousness as well.

“The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face shine upon you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace.” (Numbers 6:25 – NIV)

Grace and peace be yours in abundance,

Donna

The Voice

I am going to admit something. I’m lonely. I’ve moved from one church to another and I feel as if my “old” friends have moved along and my “new” friends have plenty of things to do besides talk to me all day long (I have plenty to do as well). There just doesn’t seem to be time in a day to nurture the relationships that need nurturing.

DSC00470mI’ve mentioned before that my husband is not a talker. So conversation with him is limited. The other person in our household has worked every evening this week. There’s just no one to talk to!

But then I read passages of Scripture that point me to the One who is looking for a conversation. He desires that verbal interaction. God wants to talk to me!

I love verses of Scripture that describe God’s voice or tell us how we are to respond to His voice. Take a look at Psalm 29:4-5 (NIV). “The voice of the Lord is powerful; the voice of the Lord is majestic. The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars; the Lord breaks in pieces the cedars of Lebanon.”

Another passage that speaks of God’s voice is in Revelation 1:15 (NIV). As John envisions this great scene, he recounts the voice of God. “…his voice was like the sound of rushing waters.”

Again, the power that can be found in God’s voice is amazing and with the recent floods in Colorado, I have come to understand this phrase first hand. It is endless. It is continually moving. It picks up items as it moves. It breaks through the barriers.

God’s voice is the same. His voice is more powerful than anything we could ever experience here on this earth. If you don’t believe me, read the creation account in Genesis 1. What a great and majestic voice our heavenly Father has!

Yes, God’s voice is majestic and powerful, but it is calming. Jesus used the analogy of a shepherd and his sheep (John 10). The sheep know their shepherds voice. In the same way, we are to know God’s voice. When we hear Him calling us, we are to listen and take note of what He is saying.

In this passage Jesus says that He knows His sheep. He calls them by name and we recognize His voice. “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.” (John 10:27 – NIV) As we get to know Jesus on a personal level, we begin to know His voice and we follow Him.

So today I may be feeling a little lonely, but I know that my heavenly Father is anxiously awaiting our next conversation. And I certainly don’t want to disappoint Him!

Perhaps you know exactly how I feel. If so, you too can have the same conversation with God as I do. There’s no secret code, no friendship ritual you have to pass to get in to talk to Him. And He’s not hiding behind a big curtain.

His gentle voice is calling you to sit and chat. I pray you’ll accept His invitation.

Grace and peace be yours in abundance,

Donna
