Flood Relief Information for Colorado Friends

Rocky Mountain Christian Church and Samaritan’s Purse staff and volunteer teams are working in affected areas to help families by removing mud and debris, take out damaged flooring, sheet rock and insulation, treat homes for mold and salvage personal items. Our teams include experienced professionals with the tools, resources and knowledge to manage mud outs in the appropriate ways. Without this, more damage can be done to homes.

Every weekday and Saturdays at 7:30 am, volunteers can come to Rocky’s Niwot Campus, 9447 Niwot Road, as we are mobilizing teams of volunteers to all Boulder, Longmont, Frederick, Firestone and surrounding communities. Training will be provided for the first 30 minutes and then assignments are made. We need 200 volunteers every morning at 7:30 am at our Niwot Campus to help with our growing list of 50-100 homes. The more volunteers we can recruit, the more homes we can help.

Relief updates for Rocky can be found at rmcc.org/floodrelief.

Thank you for your continued support in our efforts to serve our communities.

Fired Up for Flood Relief

It is exciting to be part of a church that is so willing to serve in many ways. We have crews of folks heading out each day to work in the flood areas of our communities.

With the combined efforts of all the churches in our state, Jesus is showing up in every neighborhood to lend a helping hand. It’s been a blessing to see how believers in Christ are willing to jump in and do everything possible to help rebuild lives.

I’m sharing a couple of letters today that our Lead Pastor and my friend, Shan Moyers asked us to share. One is for those of you who are local. The first letter is for you. The second letter is for those of you who do not live in Colorado. There is still plenty you can do to help with our efforts here.

Whether you are local or out-of-state, please consider sharing this information with others you know who may be willing to help. Send it to your church leaders. Send it to friends and family. Share the message that we are in need. When we partner together, we are much stronger.

My writing today leaves you with Jesus’ words. While sharing the message of the sheep and the goats in Matthew 25:31-46, Jesus commended those who gave to Jesus when He was in need. He was fed when hungry. He was given water when thirsty. He was given shelter when homeless. He was given clothing when naked.

Then these words were spoken. “‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invited you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’ The King will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.’” (Matthew 25:37-40 – NIV)

May God’s blessings pour over you today as you serve Christ the King!

Grace and peace be yours in abundance,

Donna

TO LOCAL CONTACTS

Friends and Community Partners,

Rocky is firing on all cylinders for our 2013 Flood Relief and we know people are looking to help. We have partnered with Samaritan’s Purse who is now on site at our Niwot Campus. Samaritan’s Purse and Rocky Mountain Christian Church staff and volunteer teams are working with families to remove mud and debris, take out damaged flooring, sheet rock and insulation, treat homes for mold and salvage personal items. We also have other opportunities for volunteers, such as food preparation, childcare, cleaning and more.

Here’s how YOU can help. We need volunteers and lots of them to do any of the above projects. So we’re asking if you can share with all of your contacts and friends that we’re looking for volunteers. Here is what they need to know.

  1. Every weekday at 7:30 am at Rocky Mountain Christian Church’s Niwot Campus, 9447 Niwot Road, we are mobilizing teams of volunteers to all communities, including Frederick and Firestone
  2. If volunteers want to help but cannot come at 7:30 am, call Rocky at 303-652-2211 or come to Rocky’s Niwot Campus, 9447 Niwot Road, throughout the day. We have needs for hundreds of volunteers.
  3. If volunteers can’t help today, but maybe another day, click here to fill out a volunteer form and we’ll contact them soon.

Thank you for helping us mobilize volunteers. We couldn’t do it without you!

TO OUT-OF-TOWN CONTACTS

Dear Friend,

As many of you know, the recent Colorado floods have devastated our homes, churches, businesses and communities. A recent report stated more than 19,000 homes have flood damage. It’s incredible. Yet despite the heartache, so many of our people are coming together to serve each other. God is definitely moving and we are incredibly thankful for the opportunities to show His love to everyone.

Many of you have already graciously asked how you can help. Thank you! Here is some information for you on what you can do.

  1. Pray. Ask God to be with the families that were affected by the flood. Pray He shows us the opportunities to help others in need and that they’ll be open to His love. Pray God provides us the resources, volunteers and monetary donations, to help them.
  2. Donate. The needs of our people are tremendous. A majority of people do not have flood insurance. We have partnered with Samaritan’s Purse to help families remove mud and debris, take out damaged flooring, sheet rock and insulation, treat homes for mold and salvage personal items. We need monetary donations to help people purchase things like dry wall, insulation, water heaters, sump pumps and other supplies. Prayerfully consider helping us through giving to our 2013 Flood Relief at http://www.rmcc.org/news-events/floodrelief/.

At this time, we are not ready to take volunteers from out of town churches or organizations. However, if and when we do, we will certainly contact you.

Thank you for all your support. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me if you have any questions or if Rocky can be of service to you. We’re all in the journey together!

Grace,
Shan Moyers

“Till the Storm Passes By” – Monday Musical Musings

Dear friends, thank you for reading all my posts about the trouble Colorado is experiencing during the recent floods. Unfortunately, we have much to clean up and rebuild. Some predict it will take a year to regain access to some of the mountain communities. It is stormy here and I’m not just talking about the weather.

I recall singing this hymn through my youth and young adulthood. At that time, I couldn’t have imagined what storms I’d be facing through my life. But looking back, I’ve faced some difficult storms. Death, health issues, rebellion, and divorce just to name a few.

But through all of the storms in my life, I always knew I could depend on One to guide me through those storms. Without God’s Holy Spirit leading and guidance, I would have become lost in the turmoil. Without the gentle comfort, I would have been discouraged. Without the prompting I would have continued in my rebellion.

Even in these dark days we’ve passed through, there is great hope. There are many opportunities to share that hope with those we come in contact with. With God’s help, we will be safe until the storm passes by.

So here are the words and link to the hymn, “Till the Storm Passes By.” Perhaps you aren’t going through major flooding as we are today, but a storm of another type. If that’s the case, hold on to these words. Allow God to keep you safe until it’s over. Then you’ll be able to praise Him on the other side.

“Till the Storm Passes By”

In the dark of the midnight,
Have I oft hid my face;
While the storm howls above me,
And there’s no hiding place;
‘Mid the crash of the thunder,
Precious Lord, hear my cry;
“Keep me safe ’til the storm passes by.”

‘Til the storm passes over,
‘Til the thunder sounds no more;
‘Til the clouds roll forever from the sky,
Hold me fast, let me stand,
In the hollow of Thy hand;
Keep me safe ’til the storm passes by.

Many times Satan whispers,
“There is no need to try;
For there’s no end of sorrow,
There’s no hope by and by”;
But I know Thou art with me,
And tomorrow I’ll rise;
Where the storms never darken the skies.

‘Til the storm passes over,
‘Til the thunder sounds no more;
‘Til the clouds roll forever from the sky,
Hold me fast, let me stand,
In the hollow of Thy hand;
Keep me safe ’til the storm passes by.

When the long night has ended,
And the storms come no more,
Let me stand in Thy presence.
On that bright, peaceful shore.
In that land where the tempest
Never comes, Lord may I
Dwell with Thee when the storm passes by.

‘Til the storm passes over,
‘Til the thunder sounds no more;
‘Til the clouds roll forever from the sky,
Hold me fast, let me stand,
In the hollow of Thy hand;
Keep me safe ’til the storm passes by.[i]

I heard an interview with Governor Hickenlooper this morning. He said, “We have bridges that are broken, but the Colorado spirit will never break.” I know this Colorado spirit cannot be broken, but it’s not because I’m a Coloradan. It’s because I’m a Christian. I will make it until the storm passes by.

Grace and peace be yours in abundance,

Give it to God

Today is a special day for a couple of reasons. We will be gathering with our church family to pray for those affected by the floods here in Colorado. Every portion of this morning’s service has been changed, but the fact that those of us who are able to gather will be together. We will worship God for who He is and for what He has done. We will honor Him in this way…because that’s what we do.

Today is also my wedding anniversary. We’ve been married 12 years and if you do the math, you realize that we were married four days after 9/11. Today I feel some of the same emotions that I did all those years ago. Lives have been lost this week. Homes and families have been torn apart. Many are still stranded. Many are still missing. I don’t feel much like celebrating.

What I can do today is cling to Jesus, for it’s only through Him that I can make it through yet another storm. I’ve chosen a post that may help with anxiety that comes when we face storms. I pray that these words will be of help if you face a storm today.

Please keep my family and my Colorado friends in your prayers today. It’s raining again.

Do Not Be Anxious

It doesn’t happen very often, but I received three phone calls from our city telling us that we were under a tornado warning. I guess it’s just natural to feel a bit anxious under these circumstances. But there were several reasons last night that sent me that direction.

First of all, Mason was working a night shift. Then there was the fact that Candace was still out working. And last but not least, Joy, our granddaughter was spending the night. I stayed by the television as long as I possibly could to see where these storms were headed and if, in fact, we were in any danger.

Several years ago, we were placed under a tornado warning and spent some time in the basement. Driving through the area where the tornado touched down was disturbing. The path was pretty defined. The damage was more severe in some areas than others. Destruction was evident.

I don’t like feeling anxious. I tend to become very warm, sweat much more than normal, and my heart races. After the anxiousness has subsided, I feel depleted.

Obviously in the situation of immediate danger, being anxious is normal and natural. Anxiousness can be a difficult issue for some. But for most people of our world, we do tend to overdo the anxiousness. Sometimes we are anxious for reasons that do not merit these feelings.

Proverbs reminds us that “an anxious heart weighs a man down, but a kind word cheers him up.” (Proverbs 12:25 – NIV) Anxiety can cause us to feel unnecessarily burdened.

Philippians 4:6 (NIV) tells us, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” It may be difficult to act in this way, but we are told to face difficulty in this manner.

So what are we to do with our anxieties? 1 Peter 5:7 (NIV) says to, “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” Give it to God. Give it completely, totally, without any hesitation, to God.

We are to trust God with all of our cares. Nahum shares these words, “The Lord is good, a refuge in times of trouble. He cares for those who trust in him.” (Nahum 1:7 – NIV)

And if we jump back to Philippians 4:7 (NIV), Paul tells us what we will receive when we trust and give God our anxiety. “And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.” God’s peace will cover us and we won’t even be able to understand why we are at peace in tough situations.

The storms passed. We were unharmed. There was no reason to be nervous or anxious. For that I am thankful. I guess the real lesson in all of this is to listen to the experts. Understand what they are saying and then take appropriate action. It’s better to be safe than sorry in this situation.

Grace and peace be yours in abundance,

Donna
