Whatever

You’ve heard it before. Thatword. You may have heard it from your teenager, your child, a co-worker, or even your spouse. Perhaps you have used it in the past or use it on a regular basis. And, you know, the word cannot just be spoken alone. There must be rolling of eyes, perhaps a hand gesture, or even someone walking away from you.
WHATEVER!
It is a word that clearly says, “I really don’t care about what you are saying and you can’t make me care!”
If you are like me, it is a word that sucks every bit of life from me. Especially when it comes from someone that I love. I want to shake them and say, “Why don’t you care?” “Am I really that unimportant to you?” “You need an attitude adjustment!” Now, I may not have tons of wisdom, but I do have some. Please give me that much!
Regardless of their reason for saying that word, my feelings get hurt, I feel as if I have no value, or it makes me angry. So why can that one little word mean so much? I believe it is because it is the final word.
The apostle Paul gives us an alternative use for this word that may help when we are in this situation. Philippians 4:8-9 says, “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whateveris noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whateveris admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.” Puts “whatever” into a completely different light doesn’t it?
When we are faced with a situation where the conversation ends with “whatever,” think about the things God wants us to think about. What is true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent, or praiseworthy. These thoughts will fill us with life! Abundant life! They will restore us so that we might be able to move on with our day.
And what does God promise? Peace. Peace in an otherwise hostile situation. Isn’t it wonderful how God knows exactly what we need? How He knew 2,000 years ago that that one little word, “whatever,” would take on a different meaning and supplied a way for us to react to it. I can now thank God for the “whatever’s” in my life and rejoice that I can use that very same word in a positive way. Whatever!

My Diamond Tree

Years ago, my Grandparents had a terraced garden in their small backyard. They always had great success and many of us were beneficiaries of their efforts. One particular year, Grandpa was laid up after surgery and was not able to help out as he usually did. They asked if I’d like to help. Of course I said yes!
I enjoyed the time I spent at Grandma and Grandpa’s. You knew you’d be well fed and would have a chance to hear Grandpa’s newest tale. But during this particular summer, I was in the garden on most visits. Weeding, watering, pruning, and staking were daily tasks and to be honest, it was therapeutic.
After one particular visit, I noticed that the diamond from my engagement ring was missing. Somewhere in that garden lay my precious stone. It was discouraging to me. I quickly recovered and knew I’d never retrieve it from the soil or the produce. I joked with my Grandparents that if a diamond tree were produced, the diamonds would be mine!
I find it interesting that in Matthew 13, Jesus shares parables with the crowds and the disciples relating the Kingdom of Heaven to several earthly illustrations, most involving working the land in planting or harvesting:
  • The Parable of the Sower – hearing the message of the kingdom and how each person responds to it
  • The Parable of the Weeds – speaks of the growth of the kingdom of heaven
  • The Parables of the Mustard Seed and the Yeast – the productivity of the kingdom of heaven
  • The Parable of the Hidden Treasure – the priceless value of our eternal life
  • The Parable of the Pearl – what am I willing to give up for that greatest treasure?
  • The Parable of the Net – victory for the righteous

Jesus ends this section of parables with this verse. “Therefore every teacher of the law who has been instructed about the kingdom of heaven is like the owner of a house who brings out of his store room new treasures as well as old.” (Matthew 13:52) As a teacher, this concept is a wonderful revelation. Not only are we to teach the old treasures, but the new as well. I love that God continues to show me new treasures each time I enter into His presence and spend time in His Word.

We can learn a few lessons from these parables. First, we see that we are never to stop learning. Dig deep. Search for those hidden treasures in God’s Word. Be open to His guidance, and you will be rewarded with renewed passion for the old treasures and exhilaration for the new.
Secondly, what are you willing to sacrifice for God’s Kingdom? Don’t skim over this question or say you’ll think about it later. If you can’t give an answer, might I suggest that you aren’t sacrificing anything? Clearly we are called to give up everything for the Pearl of Great Price. It is the only way we can find our identity in the Kingdom.
That garden never produced a diamond tree. It did however produce very good vegetables, some bonding time with my Grandparents, and a time of reflection for me. Perhaps that hidden treasure is still there, but I know it won’t be found by me.

Building a Doll House: And So It Begins – Chapter 1

You’ve seen these books. “What I Learned From God While…” Fill in the blank. Quilting, gardening, cooking, brewing tea, and the list could go on. Well here’s my version. “What I Learned From God While Building a Doll House.” I believe that God taught me some lessons during this process and I would like to take the opportunity to relate with you what God desires for each of us and for what He desires in our homes.
We first got the idea of building a doll house for our granddaughter when she saw a doll house in a toy store and was mesmerized by it. We thought it would be a fun and exciting process, so we began our journey.
We started at the hobby shop. Standing in front of half a dozen fully built houses was inspiring. We decided upon one and asked to see it closer. The store manager lifted it off the shelf and we inspected it. Yes, this was the perfect house for Joy. Along the wall were accessories: furniture, knick knacks, fireplaces, flooring, wall paper, lights…the list could go on, but you understand. Then the manager asked if we were thinking of adding electric for the house to have lights. “Of course,” we said. “I quit before I got to that point,” replied the manager. “It’s a lot more work than most people realize. I hope you’re giving yourself plenty of time to complete this project,” he added. It was at that point we began to understand the enormous task we had thought to undertake.
We purchased the house kit and a few accessories and left the hobby shop with our heads spinning.
Think a moment about the creation of the world, the universe, and man. Can you imagine what Jesus and the Holy Spirit thought when God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness…” (Genesis 1:26). Were there questions? Maybe opposition? I don’t think so. They all agreed to the plan. And I’m sure they didn’t have the overwhelming feeling Mason and I had at this undertaking, but none the less, they knew what it meant. What it would cost. Rejection, pain, inconsiderate words and actions on man’s part, and death.
Oh yes, creation was the beginning of the fall, but there’s so much more! Through the resurrection of Jesus, we have the opportunity to accept the grace offered by God and along with it, the hope for a future with God for eternity.
That first step into God’s grace may seem daunting, almost impossible. And on our own, it is. We can only understand His forgiveness when we submit completely to Him. And through His love and strength, we are able to overcome any “trouble, hardship, persecution, famine, nakedness, danger, or sword…In all things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.” (Romans 8:35, 37)With Him on our side, we have nothing to fear.
This is the first part of many chapters in this story. The “chapters” will be intertwined with other writings on my blog and together, will be a completed work. Join me on this journey. Enjoy the process and the finished project. We did and still are.

My Favorite Place

Do you have a favorite spot or location? One that warms your heart the moment you arrive? I have several “favorite” spots. So I guess I really don’t have a favorite! My newest favorite place is my new office. Within its walls, I am made comfortable by the décor, the paint colors, and the little items that make this room uniquely mine.

I painted a silhouette of a tree on one wall. I chose the color “chocolate brownie.” The gentleman who mixed the paint for me chuckled. He said he would be hungry for brownies all the time if he knew that was the name of the color. Well, that got me thinking! I began a search for a chocolate scented candle. It was actually more difficult than I would have thought, but finally, I found my candle and now the pleasant smell of brownies fills the air.
The sounds of my favorite artists fill the room with music. Depending upon my mood, gospel, pop, swing, classic country, contemporary praise, Christmas, or instrumental music can be heard. Each tune brings to mind something different. Perhaps a moment in time or a person.  Maybe a reminder to be thankful or get up and dance! Sometimes after several runs through an album, I’ll remember to switch it to something new. Regardless, the music that plays is inspirational for me.
I have a lovely ceiling fan with a light. It is pretty and functional. When it is turned on, the bulbs shed light on the work I do and the fan gives a breeze that could almost be called “hurricainal.” I know that isn’t a word, but this little fan can sure move some air! I have a desk lamp as well for when I’m reading my Bible or working on Bible studies. It too provides the light needed for all tasks at my desk.
Throughout my house, you’ll find joy. Not my granddaughter (well maybe on certain days you’ll find her here), but the word “joy.”I’ve lost count of the actual number of plaques, pictures, artwork, etc. with that on it, but each room has something with joy on it. My office is no different. Joy can be found in prominent places and there is even one that you’d need to search for. My coffee coaster has red poppies on it. In making Ukrainian Eggs, the red poppy is a symbol for joy. Joy abounds here!
Among the items on the walls are verses of Scripture that are meaningful to me. They are words directly from God for me to remember. “For the Lord is good. His love endures forever.” (Psalm 100:5) “Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!” (Philippians 4:4) “Be still and know that I am God.” (Psalm 40:10) “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”(Philippians 4:13)
As I sit at my desk the verse that I see directly in front of me is “Show me your ways, O Lord. Guide me in your truth and teach me.” (Psalm 25:4-5)For me, this is what it’s all about. As I study God’s Word, prepare to lead women in Bible study, or write, I’m always open to His teachings and guidance. I’m always searching for His truth.
In several ways, my office reminds me of heaven. It is a welcoming place. A comfortable place. And the reason? God has invited us. Invited us to join Him for eternity. It is where He dwells. And He has done His best work there.
  • God’s chosen décor for heaven is gems, pearls, and gold.
  • There is a tree…the tree of life.
  • Perhaps there will be glorious scents…we are invited to the wedding feast after all.
  • And music? Of course! Thousands and thousands of angels singing, “Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and praise!”(Revelation 5:13)
  • There will be no need of a light or a lamp, for God Himself will provide the Light.
  • And yes, there will even be joy! We will join with the angels in joyful assembly.
  • God’s Word will be there as well. Just as He spoke in the beginning, He will speak throughout eternity.
My office…a little bit like heaven. I will never sit here again without thinking of my future home. One that God has prepared for you and me. Come and join me in that ultimate “favorite” place. God will be waiting!

That Could Have Been a Bad Day!

The sun was shining brightly. The warmth of the sun could be felt on my skin. Not a cloud in the sky and, the sky? Of course it was a deep sky blue that we are so accustomed to. There was a slight breeze, just enough to give the flag a bit of a wave.  It was the perfect day on the Colorado prairie to take the convertible out for a spin with the top down.
And that is just what my husband and I did. We weren’t going anywhere in particular, simply enjoying the ride and the beauty of the Colorado Rockies. Not long into our drive, we approached a pick-up truck, but nothing seemed out of the ordinary. Then it happened. Out of nowhere, a door, yes a door, was sailing through the air directly toward us. Slow motion kicked in. It was almost as if the door was hovering. My husband who was driving had to make an instant decision. Speed up, stop, slow down, or continue on at the current speed. Which action would keep us from being hit by this runaway door?
As a NASCAR fan, I know the usual action when a driver is facing an accident. The general rule is to head straight for the wreck. Chances are very good that by the time the driver reaches that point, the cars involved in the accident will have already moved to a new location. I’m not sure what my husband was thinking at that moment, but he made the decision instantly. He didn’t swerve, he didn’t hesitate, he continued on without any change in our speed and we did not get hit by that flying door. I remember watching the door as it floated directly above our heads. Then as quickly as it came, it was gone. We both breathed a sigh of relief and my husband quipped, “That could have been a bad day!”
My husband’s decision to continue at the same speed and in the direction we were headed proved to be the best decision. He chose the steadfast route. The one that would keep us safe through that frightening experience. There is a lot to be said for being steadfast. Sticking to what you are doing and heading in your intended direction. Of course you have to know where you’re headed in order to be steadfast.
How can we be steadfast in our daily walk?
Ask for God’s help! Psalm 51:10 gives us David’s prayer. Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.” David realized that a steadfast spirit would wane with the situations of life and that only God could restore it within him.
Know that God will come to your aid. 1 Peter 5:10 says, “And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast. To him be the power forever and ever. Amen.” What a blessing to be able to approach God’s throne with this request.
What are the results of being steadfast? Psalm 112:6-8 assures us, Surely he will never be shaken; a righteous man will be remembered forever. He will have no fear of bad news; his heart is steadfast, trusting in the Lord. His heart is secure, he will have no fear; in the end he will look in triumph on his foes.”
Are you catching some of these phrases? renew a steadfast spirit,” “restore and make you strong, firm, and steadfast,” “no fear of bad news,” “his heart is secure,” “trust,” “look in triumph on his foes.” What promises! And God can make these promises because He is steadfast in all His ways.
Psalm 111:7-8 tells us that our God is steadfast. The works of his hands are faithful and just; all his precepts are trustworthy. They are steadfast forever and ever, done in faithfulness and uprightness.” I don’t know about you, but that spurs me on to “hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful!” (Hebrews 10:23)
By staying the course, sticking to the narrow path, we know we are heading in the right direction. I pray that these words would resonate in your mind when you are tempted to get off track. “That could have been a bad day!”
“Therefore, my dear brothers, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.” (1 Corinthians 15:58)
