A Berean

I write a lot about how we are to live. Probably because it’s difficult to live up to God’s expectations. And it’s not just for you, my reader. My writings on living-the-right-kind-of-life are for me as well. We all fall short in this area, but I find that when encouraged (and of course allowing God’s Spirit to do the leading), we find the ability to live according to God’s plans.

???????????????????????????????Perhaps you’ve read this quote. “Live that you wouldn’t be ashamed to sell the family parrot to the town gossip.” (Will Rogers) While there is some humor in this quote, I believe there is a real message for us. So let’s take a moment to peruse our lives and see how we are to live.

There is a single verse in the book of Acts that tells a great story of the Berean people, but it also sheds some light into the way we should be living our lives. Acts 17:11 (NIV) says, “Now the Bereans were of more noble character than the Thessalonians, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day.”

I see three areas in which the Bereans excelled.

First, they were noble in character. They far exceeded the Thessalonians in this area. While Paul and Silas were in Thessalonica, the Jews who were not persuaded by Paul’s teaching became disgruntled.

This group hired “some bad characters,” thugs as we might call them. These thugs stirred up the crowd and soon a mob was formed and rioting began. Paul and Silas fled for their lives.

The Bereans weren’t like this. They had chosen to listen peacefully to all that Paul and Silas had to say. They were noble in character.

We, like the Bereans, are called to live noble lives (Proverbs 12:4). Have hearts stirred by a noble theme (Psalm 45:1). Think noble thoughts (Philippians 4:8). Have noble purposes (2 Timothy 2:20-21). Plan noble plans (Proverbs 12:4).

Outstanding qualities are what defines nobility. We must live lives where others might say what was said of the people living in Berea.

Second, the Bereans eagerly received Paul and Silas’ message. Their desire was to learn all that Paul and Silas had to teach them.

Are you eager to receive God’s message? Do you long to hear God’s Word preached? Are you listening to what God has to say to you?

God has given us a message that is filled with hope, joy, and grace. Why wouldn’t we want to eagerly listen?

James takes this idea one step further. James 1:22 (NIV) says, “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.”

Yes, we must listen and learn, but we then must put that knowledge into action. We must be willing to take that same eagerness of hearing the message and then eagerly follow God’s teachings.

Eager receiving equals changed lives.

Third, they checked Scripture for themselves to see if Paul and Silas’ message was an accurate one. I love this little section of Scripture because it tells me that the Old Testament scrolls housed in the Synagogue were available for the people to study.

The Bereans wanted to know if what Paul and Silas were preaching fell in line with God’s Word. And, after careful examination, they knew that it did. Because it was a continuation of God’s story. It was the best part of the story. Salvation through Jesus Christ.

When was the last time you pulled out your copy of God’s Word to see if what you heard was in line with Scripture? I hope it’s often. I would even pray that you check all that I write in this blog.

My reason for thinking this way? When you study God’s Word, when your knowledge of what He has to say grows, when you want to know the fullness of Scripture, then you will be blessed beyond words.

We can take an example from Timothy. Paul shares his charge to Timothy in 2Timothy 3:14-17 (NIV).

“But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, and how from infancy you have known the holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”

Knowing Scripture will take you to the highest of heights. It will change you. God’s Word will teach, rebuke, correct and train as you learn from it. And best of all, God will be able to use you in a far greater way because you will be equipped.

We can learn quite a bit from this one verse of Scripture and from the Bereans. I pray that each of us will find an eagerness to be in God’s Word daily. To hear His message as often as it is presented. And to live noble lives that praise, honor, and glorify God.

“You Are” – Monday Musical Musings

It’s been months since I’ve been to Praise in Motion. My summer schedule has kept me from worshiping God in this special way. But the music from Praise in Motion continues to show up and remind of what is waiting when I am able to return.

DSC01820The song I share with you today is one of those songs. “You Are” reminds me that regardless of my circumstances, God is the One who fills my life and soul with all that I need. Healing. Light. A song. Breath. Hope. Provision. Cleansing.

But it goes on to remind me that there is a response for me when God has replenished my soul. I am to dance and shout endless praise to my Creator.

Do you find yourself in one or more of these circumstances today? If so, what will your response be? Will you ask the God of all creation to replenish your soul or will you allow the hurt of this world to drag you down? Will you ask the God of all creation to be your song, your breath and your hope? Will you respond to His graciousness with dancing and praise?

Before you read through the lyrics of this song, I’d like to remind you of David’s words from Psalm 149. He said, “Praise the Lord. Sing to the Lord a new song, his praise in the assembly of the saints. Let Israel rejoice in their Maker; let the people of Zion be glad in their King. Let them praise his name with dancing and make music to him with tambourine and harp. For the Lord takes delight in his people; he crowns the humble with salvation. Let the saints rejoice in this honor and sing for joy on their beds.” (Psalm 149:1-5 – NIV)

Now, let’s worship the One who provides all that we need.

“You Are”[i]

When I can’t find the words to say how much it hurts
You are the healing in my heart
When all that I can see are broken memories
You are the light that’s in the dark

Chorus:
You are the song,
You are the song I’m singing
You are the air,
You are the air I’m breathing
You are the hope,
You are the hope I needed
You are

And when my circumstance leaves me with empty hands
You are the provider of my needs
When all my dirtiness has left me helpless
You are the rain that washes me

(Chorus)

If I had no voice,
If I had no tongue,
I would dance for you like the rising sun.
And when that day comes and I see your face.
I will shout your endless glorious praise.

A Full Day

It’s a full day! First, it’s the Lord’s Day…I pray you treat it so.

Second, it’s my oldest child’s birthday! Happy Birthday Philip! I love you!

Third, it’s sign up day for women’s ministry at Rocky! Stop by the tables at both campuses and find a place to connect with God’s Word and other women.

Rocky isn’t the only church with new studies (for women, men and students) starting in the next few weeks. Check out your local church to see what they have to offer. Get connected!

Today’s repeated blog post is about women’s Bible study. Enjoy!

Transforming Words

DSC02392mOne of my greatest joys is to teach women about God’s Word and how it relates to our daily lives. I love how God used and uses His Bible to show us the inadequacies and the successes as we go through our spiritual journey. When I can share these truths with others, I’m so blessed.

I’ve had the privilege of leading several groups of ladies in the past. What I love about these groups is their desire to go a little deeper into Scripture to find the greater value of knowing God’s message inside and out. But they’ve gone beyond knowledge. They implement these truths into their daily lives. They live out their faith. They are spiritual warriors in their own worlds.

While I love getting deep in God’s Word, I also love teaching those who know nothing or very little about God. I love sharing the Gospel. I love sharing God’s grace and forgiveness. I love sharing the importance of learning and studying God’s plan through His Word.

Several years ago, I was asked to lead a study on a wonderful book called A Newcomer’s Guide to the Bible[i]. The book is a great tool for beginners, but I found it to be inspiring for me as well. It gives a clear view of how the Bible is a complete work. How it fits together perfectly. It shows that God had a plan from the beginning and how He connected that plan throughout.

We really wanted to use this in our women’s Bible study program, but the problem is that a person going through the book would never have to open the Bible by reading this book. My close friend, the women’s ministry director and I took on the task of writing a companion study to go along with the book. It was the first study I’d ever written and I must say I was hooked!

It doesn’t matter how many times I go through this study (and I’ve done it four or five times) I always learn something new. God always directs my study time to find something different to think about. Just as He has always done in the past.

You see, God’s Word is very relevant for our lives today. It is living and active. And it points us to the exact place we need to be in our relationship with God.

Perhaps you understand what I am saying. Verses pop out that you’re certain you’ve read before, but never meant anything to you until a certain moment. Or a passage will have greater meaning depending on what is happening in our lives. That’s how God’s Word works.

This also validates that we must never stop studying or reading the Bible. God will always show us something as we approach our study time with an open heart and mind. Don’t ever underestimate what God will teach you when you’re an eager vessel.

Perhaps we read verses of Scripture like Psalm 119:105 (NIV), “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path” and wonder how God is able to do this. But He does. God directs us through His Word to show us the path we are to take. And as we study Scripture, we’ll gain more insight into that path and we’ll learn to hear His voice.

I’d love to hear from you about this topic. Have you experienced anything I’ve mentioned today? If so, how? What new information has God shown you through your study time? Has He pointed you directly to a passage that you needed for a specific situation?

I can honestly say that He has for me.

I pray that you’re getting into God’s Word today. I pray that new insight will be shown to you because of your eager heart. I pray that God will show you exactly what He wants you to learn today.

God’s Word is a precious gift to us. Let’s never take it for granted. Let’s spend as much time reading the pages of this book as possible. Let’s glean potential knowledge and wisdom from its inspiring words. Let’s see what God has to say to us today!

Grace and peace be yours in abundance,

Donna

Snow in the Mountains

What a beautiful morning it is in Colorado! It’s a bit cooler and there was snow in the mountains yesterday! These little weather patterns remind us that the seasons are thinking of changing. Oh I’ve lived long enough to know that autumn has not come onto the scene yet, but it is sure nice to be able to enjoy this lovely weather for a few days.

???????????????????????????????I know…it’s only August and there are hot days still ahead in Colorado, but I am getting the itch for autumn to arrive. The cool, crisp air. A sweater to wrap around myself. The scent of apples and nutmeg wafting through my kitchen. My fall décor throughout my home. I’m ready.

I’m ready for a change…even if it the calendar doesn’t say it’s fall, I want it to feel like fall.

As we search Scripture, we can see some descriptions of God as being like something we are familiar with.

We’ll begin our search in 2 Samuel 22:3 (NIRV) where the author of this book states, “My God is my rock. I go to him for safety. He is like a shield to me. He’s the power that saves me. He’s my place of safety. I go to him for help. He’s my Savior. He saves me from those who want to hurt me.”

God is like a shield. His protection is provided to us against all of our enemies.

In the book of Psalms, we see a couple of descriptions of God. Psalm 46:7 (NIRV) says, “The Lord who rules over all is with us. The God of Jacob is like a fort to us.” Again, we see God’s protection. A fortress to surround us in times of trouble.

And in Psalm 121:5 (NIRV), the Psalmist shows how God provides comfort during the uncomfortable times of our life. “The Lord watches over you. The Lord is like a shade tree at your right hand.”

In Proverbs, we see two more pictures of what God is like. In Proverbs 3:12 (NIRV), God is described as a father. “The Lord trains those he loves. He is like a father who trains the son he is pleased with.” Because of the great love God has for us, we accept His training as we might from our earthly father.

And in Proverbs 18:10 (NIRV), God’s name is shown to be of great value to those who seek protection. “The name of the Lord is like a strong tower. Godly people run to it and are safe.”

God is described as a consuming fire several times in Scripture. As One who desires that we remain faithful to Him. The Hebrew author states it like this. “We are receiving a kingdom that can’t be shaken. So let us be thankful. Then we can worship God in a way that pleases him. We will worship him with deep respect and wonder. Our ‘God is like a fire that burns everything up.’” (Hebrews 12:28-29, referencing Deuteronomy 4:24 – NIRV)

The Psalmist asks the question, “Who, O God, is like you?” (Psalm 71:19b – NIV) And Jeremiah answers the question. “No one is like you, O Lord; you are great, and your name is mighty in power.” (Jeremiah 10:6 – NIV) We can try to describe God, but to be honest, God is beyond our comprehension. And also to be honest, I’m thankful for that.

If I were able to put my exact words to God’s existence and being, there would be nothing to draw me to Him. I’d have Him figured out. But instead, I’m continually searching for God. For who He is and why He loves me so. I’m continually searching His Word to find something new about God.

What is God like to you? Is He like a Light? Is He like a Teacher? Is He like a Husband? Is He like a Father? What is God like?

The great news is that God wants to be all of these for you and He wants to be everything for you.

Fall really is just around the corner. I simply need to be patient. Now that sure is difficult!

Grace and peace be yours in abundance,

Donna
