I’ve Been Trying…

to write something of value this morning. I’ve tried several times, but nothing seems to be coming out well. So I’m going to share a repeated blog post today. Pray for me friends…I need some inspiration and I need this writer’s block to be short-lived!

Be Patient and Stand Firm

sunrise 1-28-15Last weekend, the Ironman race was hosted in nearby Boulder, Colorado. The Ironman race is a triathlon consisting of 2.4 miles of swimming, a 112-mile bike ride and 26.2 mile marathon; this is competition and endurance at its best.

While I admire the group of people who trained and participated in this remarkable race, there are others I admire much more because of their endurance.

The cancer patient who continues to come to work with a smile, all the while dealing with the nausea of her treatment. The single mom who works two jobs to keep her children fed and sheltered. The dad who continues to look for work after his company files for bankruptcy. And this list could go on and on.

And then there are those who are suffering for their faith. They wake up each morning knowing it’s probably not going to be any better, but they hold onto to one thing. Hope. Hope that it might get better in this world, but if it doesn’t, there is victory in life after death.

James, the half-brother of Jesus had seen the horrors of persecution. If he wasn’t at the cross, he heard of the cruelty placed upon his brother. He knew of the persecution work of Saul. Perhaps James heard Stephen’s words as the mob stoned Stephen. More than likely, James knew of the many being put to death for their faith and trust in Jesus.

And these are the words of comfort these persecuted believers heard from James. “Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything…Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised those who love him.” (James 1:2-4; 12 – NIV)

Finding joy in trials may be difficult, perhaps even impossible to our human minds. But over and over in Scripture we see the spiritual blessings we receive when we rejoice in all circumstances.

Perhaps the Apostle Paul encouraged the persecuted because of the persecution he himself had inflicted upon believers of Christ. We find these words of encouragement in Romans 5:3-4; Romans 8:35-39; 1 Corinthians 9:24-27; 2 Corinthians 4:8-10; Galatians 6:9; Philippians 3:14; Philippians 4:13;  2 Timothy 2:3; and 2 Timothy 4:1-5, 7. Paul understood hardship and trial. But he also understood that through God, endurance is possible.

We can find more encouraging words from the writer of Hebrews. “You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised.” (Hebrews 10:36 – NIV)

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” (Hebrews 12:1-2 – NIV)

Crossing the finish line is the ultimate goal of any race. It’s no different for the believer. The only difference is that with eyes fixed upon Jesus, we are able to run the race well. We are able to put off the hindrances. We are able to hit the marks.

I don’t know what trials you may be facing today. I pray that you will find encouragement in Scripture and know to “be patient and stand firm, because the Lord’s coming is near.” (James 5:8 – NIV)

Grace and peace be yours in abundance,

Ha! Today is Thursday

I am not sure what I was thinking yesterday, but I thought it was Thursday, so you got some thoughts on a poem yesterday. I didn’t realize it until I was posting to Facebook. Oh brother!

So today I thought I’d mess with you (or more likely me) and post another song. I need to be pumped up for the day ahead, as well as the weekend.

“Overcomer” by Mandisa is a new song to me, but I love the pep and the beat, but I especially like the lyrics. Why? Because we are overcomers in Jesus Christ. Romans 8:37 (NIV) reminds us that because of what Jesus did for each of us, “…we are more than conquerors…” And if you want different verbiage, let’s look at it in the New Living Translation. “…overwhelming victory is ours…”

Through Jesus Christ we are able to overcome more than we could possibly imagine. Why? Because He is already victorious (John 16:33; 1 John 4:4)!

So as you go about your day today, remember who you belong to and what He has done for you. With this knowledge, why wouldn’t we live our lives as overcomers?

“Overcomer”[i]

Staring at a stop sign
Watching people drive by
T Mac on the radio
Got so much on your mind
Nothing’s really going right
Looking for a ray of hope

Whatever it is you may be going through
I know He’s not gonna let it get the best of you

You’re an overcomer
Stay in the fight ‘til the final round
You’re not going under
‘Cause God is holding you right now
You might be down for a moment
Feeling like it’s hopeless
That’s when He reminds You
That you’re an overcomer
You’re an overcomer

Everybody’s been down
Hit the bottom, hit the ground
Oh, you’re not alone
Just take a breath, don’t forget
Hang on to His promises
He wants You to know

The same Man, the Great I am
The one who overcame death
Is living inside of You
So just hold tight, fix your eyes
On the one who holds your life
There’s nothing He can’t do
He’s telling You

“God in the Seasons” – Today’s Touch

Thursday has rolled around again and so it’s time for a poem! I loved the title of this poem. And as I read through it, I think of how each season brings with it sights and sounds to remind us of God.

Local Scenics0171mBut I also know that in each season of my life, God has been with me as well. Through loneliness, physical and emotional pain, turmoil, unrest, drought, joy, abundance, health, worship and peace. The blessings and the difficult, God has been with me.

And He has been with you through every season of your life as well. That’s just one thing I love about our God. He is bigger and grander and more powerful and immeasurably more than my brain can comprehend. And He is the God in the seasons of this earth.

Who put the stars in place and doesn’t let them wander? He did. Who tells the moon when to show up each night? He does. Who draws the line in the sand to keep the ocean from overtaking the land? He does that as well. Yes, the God who loves you more than you could ever imagine has another job…He keeps creation on task.

So here’s today’s poem that reminds us of His glorious creation. I pray that you will enjoy it.

“God in the Seasons”

Lord,
In Spring we are reminded
of the magnificence of Your creation,
as the earth is covered in verdant green,
with splendid splashes of color,
and we witness birth everywhere,
of animals bearing their young,
of buds turning into leaves and flowers
and our own moods being reborn
with renewed energy and life.

Lord,
in Summer, we remember
the warmth of Your love for us
and the light of Your goodness.
Both are everywhere for those who look.
Thank You for butterflies,
birds and wildlife for us to enjoy,
water to swim in,
and weather that frees us to romp and play
while outdoor pleasures are at their peak.

Lord,
In Fall, we thank you for Your cooling breezes,
that bring relief from the relentless summer heat.
We see bright colors fading and dying,
leaves turning brown, crisp, disintegrating,
only to be reborn next year,
reminding us that every living thing, including us,
must die in some way before being reborn.

Lord,
In Winter, as white snow blankets the ground,
we are reminded of Your purity and Your perfection.
The complexity and beauty of each single snowflake
only hints at Your transcendent intelligence and creativity.
We hunker down and snuggle in,
knowing this season will wind down
and Spring will reappear, as it always has
because You created an orderly, predictable universe,
not by chance, but from your flawless design.

Thank You for the seasons, Lord,
and everything in them
that You created for our enjoyment.

Go and Show

I’m slowing writing the Book of Luke and oh the gems I’m finding. I could never share all of them, but today I wrote these words. “Go and show” from Luke 5:14 (NASB).

CCJesus had healed a man with leprosy and He asked the man not to tell anyone that Jesus had healed him. But instead, he was to go and show the priest that he was clean and make the necessary sacrifices.

I don’t know if I’m reading more into this than Jesus intended, but I think we can find some real wisdom here. This is what my take away is: Don’t just tell others about Jesus, but go and show them Jesus.

Perhaps you’ve heard Francis of Assisi’s quote, “The deeds you do may be the only sermon some persons will hear today.”

So how can you go and show Jesus to others today? Maybe it can be as simple as waving to a neighbor, or showing kindness on the road, or helping a mom with her groceries in the parking lot, or paying for the person’s coffee behind you, or stopping to talk with someone. Yes, these are ways to go and show Jesus to others.

But now let’s get serious. What about volunteering in a homeless shelter? Delivering food to those in need? Showing kindness to those who are obviously your enemy? Support a missionary or sponsor a child in an underdeveloped country?

Friends, Jesus never intended for us to live in the comfort of our own lives and not get involved with others (Matthew 20:25-28; Mark 8:34-38; Galatians 2:20). Jesus asked 12 men to leave the comfort of their own lives to go and show others what Jesus could do for them. That is what He wants us to do as well.

Jesus’ last words to His disciples are words you’ve heard many times before. “Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” (Matthew 28:19-20 – NIV) Their mission is our mission.

How do you plan to live today? Will you ignore those around you who need to be shown Jesus? Or will you go and show the world that you belong to Jesus and how He is able to make some remarkable changes in their life? I pray that you will go and show. Watch our world, here we come!

“My Lighthouse” – Monday Musical Musings

Darkness. It’s all around us and even in our own lives at times. Fear. Doubt. Anxiety. Depression. These are all emotions that can pull us into the darkness of that scheming evil one.

IMAG1492The good news I have to share with you today is that there is a Light that is able to dispel any darkness in your life.

Jesus’ words in John 8:12 (NIV) remind us that He is the Light. “When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.’”

You see, we can live in the light when darkness is all around us. Because when we are walking with Jesus, we are in His Light. And Jesus reminds us that in His light, there is life.

This is exactly where I want to live and I pray that you want to do the same thing.

The song I’ve chosen today is called “My Lighthouse.” When we seek the light from the Lighthouse, we will find our way home. We will find our way back to Jesus.

I pray that you will take the time to read through these lyrics today. They will lead you to Jesus and that will make all the difference in your world today. Jesus is the Lighthouse and He is shining His Light so that you will to come to Him. Don’t miss it.

“My Lighthouse”[i]

In my wrestling and in my doubts
In my failures You won’t walk out
You’re great love will lead me through
You are the peace in my troubled sea
You are the peace in my troubled sea

In the silence You won’t let go
In the questions Your truth will hold
Your great love will lead me through
You are the peace in my troubled sea
You are the peace in my troubled sea

My lighthouse
My lighthouse
Shining in the darkness I will follow You

My lighthouse
My lighthouse
I will trust the promise
You will carry me safe to shore
Safe to shore

I won’t fear what tomorrow brings
With each morning I’ll rise and sing
My God’s love will lead me through
You are the peace in my troubled sea
You are the peace in my troubled sea

Fire before us You’re the brightest
You will lead us through the storms
