Some Surprisingly Special Scripture

My summer study ends today. The lives of Rahab and Mary have had a big impact upon my life. God has shown me some beautiful things about these women and it is my deep desire to have the faith that these two ladies in history expressed.

DSC02392mTomorrow morning I am headed to Precept Inductive Bible Study training. I have been looking forward to this weekend for a while and am getting excited to learn this study tool. Again, I know that God will be pointing out some spectacular precepts from His Word. I can’t wait to get there!

Today I thought I’d share a few verses of Scripture that have been special for me over the past four weeks. I look forward to looking at these verses with fresh eyes come Monday morning. I pray that God is at work in your life as strongly as He is in mine!

“With man this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God.” (Mark 10:27 – NIV)

“For nothing is impossible with God.” (Luke 1:37 – NIV)

“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.” (Psalm 119:105 – NIV)

“Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord.” (Luke 2:11 – NIV)

“The day after the Passover, that very day, they ate some of the produce of the land; unleavened bread and roasted grain. The manna stopped the day after they ate this food from the land; there was no longer any manna for the Israelites, but that year they ate of the produce of Canaan.” (Joshua 5:11-12 – NIV)

“I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5 – NIV)

I know, these are a strange combination of passages, but these have been set before me over the past few weeks. I pray that God has done the same for you. I pray that He has opened your eyes to some pretty spectacular passages recently. If not, why not ask God to show you something cool today?

John 15:5 – Word of God Wednesday

Just a reminder that this is the day of the week that I write very little and allow God’s Word to speak. I’ve chosen John 15:5 to share with you today. This is a verse that I am memorizing this week. It’s such a good reminder that I thought you’d like to read it today.

“I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5 – NIV)

Another reason to share this verse with you is to segue into sharing about a new Bible study that is being released on Saturday, August 1. The Armor of God by Priscilla Shirer will help us to understand that we have power through God’s Holy Spirit. If you are looking for a study for your women’s group, men’s group or couples group, I’m sure this one you might want to look at.

Compromised

When I arrived home from work yesterday, my husband was on the phone with our bank. It was a pretty intense conversation and continued for nearly an hour. Someone in Bulgaria had managed to hack into our bank account. Not just our debit cards (which has happened so many times for my husband), but our actual bank account.

sunsetThe ID and our password had to be changed. But it seems that wasn’t enough for our bank. They changed our checking and savings account numbers. Once it was all taken care of, Mason hung up the phone and then our minds started reeling.

We thought of all the things that would need to be changed. Every bill would need to be looked at to see if this information needed updated. But then it hit us.

Friday is payday for Mason. Monday is payday for me. Would there be enough time for this information to be changed before these two events happened? It’s hard to say.

Do you ever wonder why God is waiting to send Jesus to gather His Bride? Isn’t the world in a great heap of trouble? Wouldn’t it be lovely if today was the day? Obviously, God has determined that not enough time has taken place between Jesus’ ascension and His second coming. But why?

2 Peter 3 gives us some insight into Jesus’ return. Oh you can believe God will send Jesus. “But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.” (2 Peter 3:8-9 – NIV)

God is waiting for the multitudes of our planet to come to know Him. His desire is for everyone to come to know His saving grace. That’s how patient our heavenly Father is.

So until the day, we wait. We wait patiently as well. But we shouldn’t be sitting around waiting. We should be telling others about Jesus at every opportunity (Matthew 28:19-20). We should be striving to live holy lives (Colossians 3). We should be studying to show ourselves approved (2 Timothy 2:15). We should be ready to give an answer to anyone who asks a question (1 Peter 3:15).

There is plenty to do while we wait!

I know. Waiting is difficult. Waiting isn’t fun. But it’s what we are to do. Wait. Watch. Get yourself ready. Ask others to join you. God does keep His promises and He will send Jesus. And the waiting continues.

“Master, the Tempest is Raging” – Monday Musical Musings

Here’s an older hymn that I haven’t heard in years! I’m reminded of singing this hymn on Sunday mornings with my Dad leading worship and Judy Lareau at the piano.

IMAG1492Judy’s piano skills were phenomenal. There wasn’t a Sunday that went by that I wasn’t amazed by what she could do at the piano. Judy was my first piano teacher…and what a patient lady she was! I wouldn’t practice as much as I should and I’d fumble through my pieces. But in the end, Judy would encourage me to practice more in the upcoming week and then proceed to give me a star. Not a gold or silver star. It was usually a red or blue star.

As the years progressed, I moved from piano to the organ and when Judy was on vacation, I stepped in as her substitute. Oh boy, were those some stressful Sunday’s for a high school mediocre pianist!

Today’s hymn is a good reminder for each of us that when we are in our most stressful situations, when we are faced with wild tempests, when the night is as dark as it can be, our Savior Jesus is with us and He offers these words of encouragement.

Jesus is the Master of our tempest. He is the Master of our fear. He is the Master of our anguish. He is the Master of our darkest hour. He is the Master of our peace.

When we give to Jesus all that is troubling us, He is able to calm the storm and give us peace. Don’t allow another day to pass without Jesus as your Master. It will make all the difference in the world.

So today, take a look at these lyrics and then, click on the link below to listen to this beautiful old hymn with a twist. I know you’ll enjoy it!

“Master, the Tempest is Raging”

Master, the tempest is raging!
The billows are tossing high!
The sky is o’ershadow with blackness,
No shelter or help is nigh;
Carest Thou not that we perish?
How canst Thou lie asleep,
When each moment so madly is threatening
A grave in the angry deep?

Chorus:

The winds and the waves shall obey Thy will,
Peace, be still!
Whether the wrath of the storm tossed sea,
Or demons or men, or whatever it be
No waters can swallow the ship where lies
The Master of ocean, and earth, and skies;
They all shall sweetly obey Thy will,
Peace, be still! Peace, be still!
They all shall sweetly obey Thy will,
Peace, peace, be still!

Master, with anguish of spirit
I bow in my grief today;
The depths of my sad heart are troubled
Oh, waken and save, I pray!
Torrents of sin and of anguish
Sweep o’er my sinking soul;
And I perish! I perish! dear Master
Oh, hasten, and take control.

(Chorus)

Master, the terror is over,
The elements sweetly rest;
Earth’s sun in the calm lake is mirrored,
And heaven’s within my breast;
Linger, O blessèd Redeemer!
Leave me alone no more;
And with joy I shall make the blest harbor,
And rest on the blissful shore

(Chorus)[i]

Remain

I’ve been working on memorizing more Scripture. I have found real value and tremendous blessing in being able to recall passages. Right now, I’m working on the memorization of John 15:5 (NIV). “I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.”

???????????????????????????????Today as I join my fellow believers in Christ in worship, I remain in Jesus Christ my Lord. I pray that you will find the desire in your heart to be among Jesus’ followers and also to remain in Him.

The repeat blog post today is called My Desire. Enjoy!

My Desire

Winter came. The leaves fell off the branches of trees. It was looking pretty bleak.

Until…

Until I saw something special in a tree in my neighbor’s front yard. It was beautiful. It was what I had always wanted (okay, maybe that’s an exaggeration). Still, it was something I never dreamed of being within my grasp. It was a hornet’s nest!

My Grandfather on my Dad’s side had a hornet’s nest in his dining room. I believe my sister was with Grandpa when he spotted it. She stopped and asked if she could have it. There it sat in the dining room. Very much out of place in this formal setting.

The memories of that nest brought such a longing to my heart. I wanted that hornet’s nest!

My neighbor was out in the yard, so I ventured over and asked about the hornet’s nest in their tree. I wanted to know if I could have it!

It was given to me, so I started the research. I figured I’d be able to get it at some point, but how long would be a safe amount of time before cutting it out of the tree?

A Google search was all it took. I would just need to wait until I was certain there was no activity within the nest and cut it down.

So we waited.

We waited until it was a cold, cold day, pulled out the ladder and up my husband went to cut the branch out. With hornet’s nest in hand, I headed back to the house with my newest treasure.

I desired this nest. I would have done whatever was necessary to get it. But I didn’t know I desired it until I saw it. Until I knew it was there. Then, I wanted it more than anything!

Sometimes we know our hearts desire. For a young woman, finding the perfect mate is her desire. For a college student, a decent grade on a test is their desire. For an aging saint, heaven becomes a deep desire.

But then there are the times we really don’t know what our desire is until we see it. Like the hornet’s nest. Or a certain blouse. Or that large fish that just jumped in the lake. Then, that desire becomes important.

God has quite a bit to say about our hearts desires. Let’s see what His Word says.

First of all, Paul states, “I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out,” in Romans 7:18 (NIV). We know what we want to do, but it doesn’t always come out the way we desired.

Fortunately for us, God forgives and He heals and He redeems and He satisfies. He satisfies our desires. “Praise the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits—who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion, who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.” (Psalm 103:2-5 – NIV)

David praised God for the abundance his nation had experienced. He also asked that God would help them keep their desire and loyalty. “O Lord our God, as for all this abundance that we have provided for building you a temple for your Holy Name, it comes from your hand, and all of it belongs to you. I know, my God, that you test the heart and are pleased with integrity. All these things have I given willingly and with honest intent. And now I have seen with joy how willingly your people who are here have given to you. O Lord, God of our fathers Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, keep this desire in the hearts of your people forever, and keep their hearts loyal to you.” (1 Chronicles 29:16-18 – NIV)

These next few verses tell us that along with desire comes obedience and love.

“Delight yourself in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart.” (Psalm 37:4 – NIV)

“I desire to do your will, O my God; your law I within my heart.” (Psalm 40:8 – NIV)

“May he give you the desire of your heart and make all your plans succeed.” (Psalm 20:4 – NIV)

“Yes, Lord, walking in the way of your laws, we wait for you; your name and renown are the desires of our hearts.” (Isaiah 26:8 – NIV)

I believe God also wants us to desire salvation of others. Paul states in Romans 10:1 (NIV), “Brothers, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for the Israelites is that they may be saved.” This verse specifically says the Israelites, but we can believe that God’s desire is for all to come to Him.

When it is all said and done, my desire is to be like Jesus. My desire is to see all come to know God and Jesus as their personal Savior. My desire is to know, love, and understand God’s Word so that I might live my life to honor and praise Him.

My hornet’s nest is not in my dining room…it is in a tree in a little nature scene I have designed above my front door. I can see this hornet’s nest each day and it reminds me of my Grandfather and what he meant to me.

Grace and peace be yours in abundance,
