What Do You Think? (Sabbatical Post)

One of my fellow Christian bloggers who I’ve never met, but enjoy reading her material, handles her blog in a much different way than I do. Actually, most bloggers do. There is a theme for each day of the week and they stick to that plan.

DSC00374I’ve thought about doing something similar for my blog, but I’ve been hesitant. You see, I don’t know how that would work. I suspect God could get on board with a plan like that, but I’m not sure I could. So until I am willing to commit to something different, I’ll continue on the way I started. Write what comes to mind.

There is one element that I enjoy on Kirra’s blog that appears each Thursday. It’s called Think About it Thursday. She offers a verse of Scripture and asks her audience to think about it. How it affects them. How it might make a difference in their life. What the verse means to them. I think you understand.

So this morning, I thought I might try it here. Instead of me telling you what a passage means and how it should make an impact on your life, I’d like to hear what you think about a passage.

Now I know my audience. There is rarely any communication back and forth between us. So read the passage, and then think about it. Reflect upon it throughout the day and week. Listen for God’s voice in this hustling, bustling world of noise and come to an understanding that is personal. Then if you chose to share, I’d love to hear from you.

Read through the verses I’ve chosen and if you get a chance, write them down where you can look at them throughout the week. Might I even suggest these are a few verses to memorize! That may not be your goal, but thinking about God’s Word throughout your day should be. This is a great way to get started.

“Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.” (Colossians 3:1-3 – NIV)

I look forward to sharing some of Kirra’s writing with you. I have joined her group of guest bloggers and she has agreed to share a post or two on my blog. She is a scholar and student of God’s Word. You’ll love her!

So until tomorrow, think about it.

An Uneventful Day (Sabbatical Post)

I receive a message from Google Calendar every day. It is the same message. It rarely, and I mean rarely, changes. It says, “You have no events scheduled today.”

???????????????????????????????Sounds pretty boring doesn’t it? It is! I’m not saying that I don’t do anything, because I do. But for the most part they are spontaneous things. Spur of the moment events that aren’t written on anyone’s calendar.

Occasionally, there will be a planned event. If I remember, I put it on my Google Calendar. Just to get something different than, “You have no events scheduled today.” So like I said earlier, it rarely happens.

I’m sure there are plenty of people in this world who would love to get this message. A day that is unscheduled. A day that requires nothing from them. A day where no events are scheduled. For that group of people, I pray that you find some time for just that. A quiet day.

For me and people like me, perhaps we need to find something eventful to put on our calendar!

I’m also sure there were days when some of our Biblical friends would have liked an uneventful day.

How about Joshua? Between preparing himself and Israel for battle and battle, he was a pretty busy guy.

Or what about King David? He stayed very busy from the time he was a shepherd to the time he led the great nation of Israel. Killing giants, writing poetry and music, receiving and designing plans for the Temple were just a few of the things that kept him busy.

Of course, I would have to mention Jesus. He certainly wasn’t idle. His schedule was busy from the time He woke in the morning long into the night. There were healings, teaching, interaction with others, debating with Jewish leaders, and His day typically ended in prayer time with His Father late at night. There were no non-eventful days for Jesus.

And then there were those who experienced uneventful days for years on end. Like the Hebrew nation wandering in the wilderness. Their message would have been the same each day. “Pick up manna. Move to next location. Sleep. Pick up manna. Move to next location. Sleep.”

Oh there were a few eventful days during this time period, like the days when God visited Moses and Joshua (Exodus 33:7-11). Maybe these were the days the people looked forward to.

Whether we have eventful days or not, we must be sure to make time for God in the midst of it. Prayer, Bible study, personal devotions, meditation, whatever you might call it, must be part of our day.

It may not need to go on your schedule, but maybe it does. If you have difficulty thinking of this important element in your life, put it on your calendar to be reminded. After a while, it will become natural and habitual. Your desire to be with God will take precedence over your memory.

It may be an uneventful day for you today. But that doesn’t mean it can’t be filled with events that are meaningful. A phone call to someone you haven’t spoken to in a while. A card written to someone who is experiencing loss. A connection in the grocery store line.

A visit with your neighbor across the fence. A smile to that person having a difficult day. Acknowledgment of those who rarely are acknowledged. You know there are more. Our spiritual eyes need to be open to these events where we can make a difference in another’s life.

If my physical schedule is uneventful today, that doesn’t mean my spiritual schedule will be the same. No, I can guarantee on the days when my mind and body are not filled with the busyness of life, these are the days God pours His knowledge and wisdom into my soul. He keeps me pretty busy on days such as this. I wonder if you have experienced the same.

Regardless of what our day holds, Scripture tells us that we are to be ready for it. Paul asked Titus to remind the people of a few things. “Remind the people to be subject to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready to do whatever is good, to slander no one, to be peaceable and considerate, and to show true humility toward all men.” (Titus 3:1-2 – NIV)

Did you catch the phrase “be ready to do whatever is good?” Doing good may not be on our calendars today, but it should be. We are to be ready to do so.

We also are asked to be prepared to give an answer. 2 Timothy 4:2 (NIV) gives instruction to Timothy from Paul, but we also need to heed the message. “Preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction.”

We must be prepared for our day and the only way we can possibly do so is through our time with God. Through prayer, Bible study and meditation, we are able to prepare ourselves for what the day brings with it.

What wonderful words to hold onto as our uneventful day unfolds!

Grace and peace be yours in abundance,

Dream, Dream, Dream (Sabbatical Post)

We are nearing the 2013 NASCAR season. Two weeks from today, the Daytona 500 will kick off the official season. But until then, there will be a great deal of racing events in the Daytona area.

Daytona Beach

Daytona Beach

I’ve had several dreams related to NASCAR. One was to go to the Daytona 500. I can check that one off the list. My mom and I enjoyed the Daytona 500 and lots more in 2011. It was a dream come true.

Another dream is to take a tour of a NASCAR shop. Most of the shops are in North Carolina, so a trip to that area would allow for multiple tours. On one of my visits to Ohio, I had a layover in Charlotte. Imagine my surprise to walk through the food court and to find a NASCAR Sprint Cup car there. Okay, so it shouldn’t have been, but it was! Jeff Gordon’s number 24 was right there. It was pretty cool.

There is one team whose headquarters and shop isn’t anywhere near North Carolina. The Furniture Row racing team is based in Denver, Colorado. Yes, in my neck of the woods. It would not take a lot of effort on my part to fulfill my dream of touring a race garage. However, I have yet to do so.

I read a quote this week on Facebook that went something like this. “Dreams remain dreams until you write them down. Then they become goals.” Why is it we allow our dreams to just remain dreams? What keeps us from realizing those dreams?

I don’t know that I can answer these questions for everyone, but I can answer them for myself. Fear holds me back. Disappointment lurks around every corner. Insecurities of past failures remind me of such failures. This list could go on and on.

And do you know who loves it when I am unable to achieve my dreams? Satan. He just loves to mess up my plans. To throw his two cents worth into the picture. You see, fear, disappointment, and insecurity all come from him. They are not from God.

God’s plan is to rid my life of anything that will pull me into the pit of despair (Psalm 40:1-2). God wants me to succeed (Jeremiah 29:11-13). God wants me to have confidence (Philippians 1:4-6).

Oh my little dream of touring a race garage is minuscule in comparison to other life goals I have. Be a published author. Perhaps join the speaking tour. Find a job. Lose weight. Share Jesus with others. Grow in my spiritual journey. Dreams? Perhaps, but now they must be goals.

So when I’m not sure of myself or my abilities, I can remind myself from whom I receive my confidence, strength, and talents. I can quote Scripture to keep fear and disappointment at bay. Perhaps you need something to help you as well. If so, maybe we can memorize these passages together.

“The Lord is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life—of whom shall I be afraid?” (Psalm 27:1 – NIV)

“My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.” (Psalm 73:26 – NIV)

“But blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him.” (Jeremiah 17:7 – NIV)

“No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.” (Romans 8:37 – NIV)

“If God is for us, who can be against us?” (Romans 8:31b – NIV)

“I can do everything through him who gives me strength.” (Philippians 4:13 – NIV)

“For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love, and of self-discipline.” (2 Timothy 1:7 – NIV)

I pray that you’ll find great comfort and encouragement from these words of God. He is on our side (Psalm 118:6). He wants us to succeed (Proverbs 16:3). He has great plans for us (Ephesians 2:10).

I don’t know about you, but I believe I’m ready to make my dreams come true. Would you like to join me?

Grace and peace be yours in abundance,

Love Notes (Sabbatical Post)

In the past, I’ve been pretty good at letting my family know I love them. Writing a little something to let them know of my love. Any time I was separated from my children, they always got a card in the mail telling them how much I loved them and missed them.

???????????????????????????????During my daughter’s freshman year at Colorado State University, she received a card each week from me and her friends were envious. Just a little something that said, “I love you” meant so much. She hung those cards on her bulletin board proudly and she knew she was loved.

My other daughter spent a summer away from me visiting family. Although it was difficult for me, she had a great time. However, I sent her a card each week to let her know that someone here in Colorado loved her.

I did the same the first time my son moved away from home. It didn’t take much, just a little something that said, “I’m thinking of you today.”

As I sat down at my computer this morning, a message popped up. It was a love note from my husband. My heart jumped. A smile formed on my face. I suddenly knew what I was going to write about today. Love notes!

Perhaps in my marriage and family life the habit of leaving love notes around has waned. Not that it’s acceptable, but it just happens through the years. Life gets busy. Money gets tight. The cost of a postage stamp keeps us from mailing those cards. We take our loved ones for granted and assume they know.

I love my family, but maybe I don’t say it or show it as often as I should. Perhaps you are in the same situation.

Maybe we should take our cue from God. He leaves love notes around for us to see all the time. Maybe we don’t recognize them as such, but love notes they are. As I look around my office, I can see eight notes from God. Each one is a verse of Scripture and each one is a reminder that God loves me.

Each time I read the Bible, I read a love note from God. It may not be a passage specifically telling me of God’s love, but the entire Bible shows me that God loved me enough to prepare this book of love.

Remember the little song we sang as a child and probably sang to your children and grandchildren? Jesus loves me. “Yes, Jesus loves me. The Bible tells me so!”[i]

So, here are a few reminders from God’s Word telling us that He does love you and me.

“For God so loved the world (insert your name here) that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16 – NIV)

“As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you (insert your name here). Now remain in my love. If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father’s commands and remain in his love. I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.” (John 15:9-11 – NIV)

“You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us (insert your name here) in this: While we (insert your name here) were still sinners, Christ died for us (insert your name here).” (Romans 5:6-8 – NIV)

“For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us (insert your name here) from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 8:38-39 – NIV)

“Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children and live a life of love, just as Christ love us and gave himself up for us (insert your name here) as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.” (Ephesians 5:1-2 – NIV)

“This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us (insert your name here). And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers.” (1 John 3:16 – NIV)

Yes, God loves you and me. Yes, Jesus loves you and me. We can confidently face the day knowing this great love. And, it wouldn’t hurt to tell a few people in your life about this love either.

“The Lord is good. His love endures forever.” (Psalm 100:5 – NIV)

Grace and peace be yours forever,

The Cross (Sabbatical Post)

In the past, I’ve mentioned a gold cross necklace that I received as a gift from a good friend. It has come to be an important piece of jewelry for me and I wear it often…most every day.

DSC02182I find it interesting however, that there are no other crosses in my home. I have a couple that I place on my Christmas tree as ornaments, but that’s it. Just the small gold cross I place around my neck.

My mind wandered and wondered about this. This symbol. This Christian symbol is to have some meaning in my life, isn’t it? It should be a reminder first and foremost that Jesus’ willing sacrifice on the cross was for me. My sin was nailed to that cross along with Jesus.

But Scripture tells us that we have our own cross to bear. Listen to Jesus’ words. “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will save it. What good is it for a man to gain the whole world and yet lose or forfeit his very self?” (Luke 9:23-25 – NIV)

As a believer, first I must deny myself. It’s in this process that we are able to come into agreement with Jesus and the life-changing ideas we find in Scripture. We can no longer live as the world lives, but we are called to live as God’s children.

Then, I am to take up my cross daily. In Jesus’ day, a cross was used for one purpose. Death. Jesus asked these believers to die. Not physically, although some of these believers would be martyred, but spiritually. He asks the same of us.

Then Jesus says to follow Him. Wherever He may lead. Wherever He intends to go. We are to obediently follow Him.

The Apostle Paul shares his experience of this process in Galatians 2:20 (NIV). “I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.”

This should be the way we live our lives. This is the way of life to which we are called. We surrender our desires. We surrender our purposes. We surrender our plans. And we take up the purposes, desires and plans of God.

As I put on my cross necklace, I am reminded once again of God’s love for me. That Jesus suffered through it all, for me. I wear this symbol for all to see what great love the Father has for His children.

“This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.” (1 John 4:9-10)

After knowing of this sacrifice, it should be our deepest desire to live a life that Jesus asked. Deny self. Take up my cross daily. Follow Him.

Will you join me?

Grace and peace be yours in abundance,

Donna
