Great is Your Love

Yesterday was a great day of celebration for America. Today, we will gather with brothers and sisters in Christ to worship the One who has provided grace to each of us. I pray that you will not neglect being with fellow believers today.

DSC_0070In Psalm 108:4-5 (NIV), King David had these words to say about God. “For great is your love, higher than the heavens; your faithfulness reaches to the skies. Be exalted, O God, above the heavens, and let your glory be over all the earth.”

Now that’s reason to celebrate!

Today’s repeat blog post is about worthless things. Enjoy!

Worthless Things

If you are like me, there are items in your home that have been in storage for some time and that you perhaps haven’t seen for years. I, in fact, have a basement full of such items.

The items that mean the most to me are carefully stored in plastic tubs on shelves. Decorations for Christmas, autumn and other seasons are neatly packed away. Carefully placed where I can find them.

However, the rest of my basement could use some attention. I do have it somewhat organized. For instance, I have a “baby” corner. That is where you’ll find the portable play pen, baby swing, high chair and anything else infant related. Each time I place an item in that corner, I think it’s the last time I’ll be using it, then “surprise!” I’m a Baba again! These are the best surprises.

There is a section where the items belong to my husband. If he’s looking for something specific, he knows where he can search. The same can be said for my children. They know where their specific section is.

But, the rest of the basement is filled with items that I haven’t been able to part with…up until this point. My basement is filled with worthless things. And I sigh each time I head to the basement.

Worthless things tend to get hold of us and then we find it difficult to rid ourselves of said items. Sometimes we are overwhelmed with the abundance of worthless things and don’t know where to start in getting rid of them. Perhaps we don’t have the energy or the ability to dispose of them.

Whatever the case, these worthless things need to be thrown away or given away because of the mental energy that is expended in thinking of these things or the physical energy used to move the worthless stuff around. There is a reason they are called “worthless things.”

Scripture has a few things to say about worthless things. Let’s see what God’s Word brings to this topic.

Proverbs 11:4 (NIV) tells us, “Wealth is worthless in the day of wrath, but righteousness delivers from death.” Money is important, yes, necessary for our daily lives. And it is crucial that our attitude toward wealth stay in line with God’s Word. But in the end, on judgment day, wealth will be worthless. Money will not buy your way to eternity in God’s presence. Wealth will be worthless on that day.

“All who make idols are nothing, and the things they treasure are worthless.” (Isaiah 44:9a – NIV) You’ve heard it before, anything that we place before God in our lives is an idol. Television, internet, friends, busyness, possessions and the list could go on and on. When we take a good look at ourselves, we are able to find those idols in our lives. These worthless “treasures” should be disposed of. They shouldn’t have a place in our lives.

This next verse adds a consequence of having worthless idols in our lives. “Those who cling to worthless idols forfeit the grace that could be theirs.” (Jonah 2:8 – NIV) Forfeiting grace is not what I want. If these worthless idols in my life are affecting the grace God has to bestow upon me, they are truly worthless. Nothing, nothing is worth forfeiture of God’s grace!

After healing a man in Lystra, Paul and Barnabas were considered to be gods who had come to live among the people. Paul and Barnabas were so upset by the crowd’s reaction that they tore their clothing and began shouting. “Men, why are you doing this? We too are only men, human like you. We are bringing you good news, telling you to turn from these worthless things to the living God, who made heaven and earth and sea and everything in them.” (Acts 14:15 – NIV)

The worthless things in Lystra had led the people to a misunderstanding of whom and what Paul and Barnabas were. They can have the same effect on our lives if we allow the worthless things of this world to become prominent. We must turn from the worthless things to the living God. It is only through Him that we are able to find complete worth.

Now that we know what worthless things bring with them, why would we want to have anything to do with anything worthless? David knew how these things could draw him into their worthlessness and he prayed this prayer. It’s one that we can use when we are captured by anything that just doesn’t matter.

In Psalm 119:37 (NIV), David says, “Turn my eyes away from worthless things; preserve my life according to your word.” Let’s make this our prayer today. To keep our eyes focused on God and not on worthless things.

The time and energy lost by sifting through all the worthless things is indeed wasted time and energy. Perhaps this is the summer for the worthless items in my basement to be purged. But more importantly, it’s time to purge the worthless things in my spiritual life. What about you? Do you have any purging to do?

Grace and peace be yours in abundance,

Let’s Celebrate America!

America celebrates its 239th birthday today. It may not be the perfect country, but I am proud to say that I am an American.

flagWhile traveling to SE Asia a few years ago, I was stopped by a group of students who were working on a high school project. They wanted to interview me. Of course the first question was where I was from. As soon as I said America, their eyes lit up. They knew America. They knew what America stood for. They liked America.

They asked what I did for a living…of course at the time I was an unemployed starving artist and I told them so. I wanted these young folks from a foreign land to know that yes, America is a great country, but that we have our problems and unemployment was one of them.

My travelling companions finally pulled me away from this enthusiastic group and we moved along to dinner.

I brought home many lessons from my trip to SE Asia, but one of them was to embrace the freedoms I have here in America. I can voice my opinion. I can vote for my candidate. I can move about without being watched. I can write and post my thoughts and feelings without reprimand.

I live with many freedoms here in America and I am so thankful for those who have fought through the years for these freedoms. I am thankful for the men and women who willingly placed their lives on the line for my freedom. I am thankful for those who sacrificially gave their lives that I might know and love freedom.

I am also thankful for the One who gave His life so that I might have spiritual freedom. It is only through Jesus Christ that can know what freedom is truly about. Freedom in Christ can be found regardless of the country in which one lives.

Because of Jesus:

I am free from the bondage of sin (Romans 6:18).

I am free from the holdings of earthly pleasure (Colossians 3:2).

I am free from the guilt of my sin (Philippians 3:13).

I am free from all the trappings of this world (Ephesians 2:1-10).

I am free to believe God (John 6:29).

I am free (John 8:31-32).

Yes, I am free indeed! I pray that you can say the same thing today, for there is truly nothing (especially freedom) outside of Jesus Christ. There is nothing this world holds that is more important than freedom in Christ.

There have been a few areas in which I’ve gone back to my old ways of living since my trip to SE Asia. There are some things I take for granted. But what I will never again take for granted is what God has done for me and that I live in a country where I can proclaim His Name.

Happy Birthday America!

A Leap Second

I don’t know if you realized it, but this week each of us had an extra second added. It was actually called a “leap second.” Apparently, the earth slows just a bit and in order to make up for this, a leap second is added. Since 2000, only four leap seconds have been added. The earth isn’t slowing all that much I’d say.

sunrise 1-28-15However, if you really want to learn more about this little thing we call leap second, click here.

So on Tuesday, June 30, 2015, an extra second was added to the clock. An extra second was added to our day.

While it may not seem like it was nearly enough to do anything, there really are things you can do in a second.

  • Blink
  • Jump
  • Smile
  • Laugh
  • Take a deep breath
  • Do a quick stretch

What did you do with that extra second? To be honest, probably nothing. Maybe you watched it on television as the second ticked by. Maybe you were completely oblivious to the fact that there was an extra second. And to be really honest, it’s a second. Do any of the things on the above list make a difference? Probably not.

But there are a few things that might make a real difference. Take a look at this list of things that can be done in a second.

  • Say “I love you”
  • Make eye contact with someone who could use encouragement
  • Be grateful for something

With this extra second, there were some meaningful things you could have done. And here’s the good news. You still have that extra second to do something meaningful with.

And when we add up those extra seconds in our lives, we might be able to do something really meaningful.

Take a look at 2 Peter 1:5-8 from the New International Reader’s Version. It says, “So you should try very hard to add goodness to your faith. To goodness, add knowledge. To knowledge, add the ability to control yourselves. To the ability to control yourselves, add the strength to keep going. To the strength to keep going, add godliness. To godliness, add kindness to believers. And to kindness to believers, add love. You should possess more and more of those good points. They will make you useful and fruitful as you get to know our Lord Jesus Christ better.”

Maybe this is a stretch, but when we add up all the seconds in our lives, this is just a little bit of what we can do with those seconds. We can love. Love our family. Love our neighbor. Love our enemy. Love.

So as we add up those seconds in our lives, let’s use these seconds for good. God’s good. Let’s be useful and fruitful. Don’t let a second go by without love.

Grace and peace be yours in abundance,

Memories Flood my Mind

My husband and I finally got a chance to watch the Glen Campbell documentary last night about his battle with Alzheimer’s. There were many things that touched my heart while watching this piece about this great American vocalist.

I recalled listening to his albums as a child with family and friends. I remembered my Dad receiving a letter from Mr. Campbell. But then it got real.

As the documentary went on, his memory loss continued to be highlighted. For Mr. Campbell, there will never be recovery of such memories and my heart broke as I saw him deteriorating before our very eyes. But I also experienced a little anxiety as watched this program.

?

First page of my memory journal

If you have been reading my blog for a while, you might recall that I went through a disappointing period of time when I experienced memory loss. It was a difficult time of my life, but the wonderful news for me was that my memory was restored.

Oh there are things I can’t remember and I am able to joke now that when I can’t seem to remember something that it must have happened before or during my memory loss season. But I will admit and agree that I am one of the blessed who have been diagnosed and “cured” of my memory loss.

If you’d like to take a glimpse into this part of my life, click here and you can read what I’ve written in the past about my memory loss.

I have been blessed with a second chance to remember. So what am I remembering?

God’s love for me. When I feel unlovely or when I am not “feeling the love” from people in this world, I am able to recall the love that God has lavished upon me (1 John 3:1).

God’s plan for my life. I know that God has prepared and has been preparing me for all that I am doing today in my life. And I also know that He’s not finished with me. What He’s doing in my life today is preparation for the future (Psalm 8:3-4).

God is with me. During times of isolation and loneliness, I know that my God is with me and He is the best friend I could ever hope for (Psalm 118:6).

God is preparing a beautiful place to spend eternity with me. As the song goes, heaven is a wonderful place. I can’t wait to see its beauty, but most of all I can’t wait to see my Creator God and Father. What a joy it will be to fully enjoy His presence for ever and ever (John 14:1-4).

God’s mercies are new every morning (Lamentations 3:22-23).

God’s love is better than life…regardless of what I remember (Psalm 63:3).

To be honest, I could keep going, but I know you understand. What do you remember about God every day? Do you continue to think about God as your day goes on? I pray that you do…never take for granted what God has done in your life. Every little thing. Remember.

As I wrote this blog, I listened to Glen Campbell’s greatest hits. I allowed memories to flood my mind. What a blessing memories are. Thank you Mr. Campbell for sharing these memories with you. God bless you and your family.

Grace and peace be yours in abundance,

Psalm 34 – Word of God Wednesday

Good Wednesday morning! Just a reminder that today I’ll just be sharing a passage of Scripture with you. Something for you to ponder and think about throughout the day.

???????????????????????????????It’s difficult today to choose just one or two verses when there are chapters like Psalm 34 that has so many to meditate upon, so I’ll give you a few from Psalm 34.

“I will extol the Lord at all times; his praise will always be on my lips.” (Psalm 34:1 – NIV)

“Glorify the Lord with me; let us exalt his name together.” (Psalm 34:3 – NIV)

“I sought the Lord, and he answered me; he delivered me from all my fears.” (Psalm 34:4 – NIV)

“Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the man who takes refuge in him.” (Psalm 34:8 – NIV)

“The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous and his ears are attentive to their cry.” (Psalm 34:15 – NIV)

“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” (Psalm 34:18 – NIV)

I pray that you will find encouragement today from God’s Word.

Grace and peace be yours in abundance,

Donna
