Jesus, the Glorious Emancipator

I heard an old gospel hymn yesterday and there was one line that caught my attention. Jesus, the glorious Emancipator.[i] That single line brought such hope and joy to my soul in that moment. It was amazing!

IMAG1492I suspect the true meaning of that term really hit me. I live as a free woman. A free woman in Jesus Christ. Without the freedom I have through Him, nothing else would really matter.

Physically, I’ve never been a slave. But spiritually, I have been held in bondage by sin and it’s from that bondage that Jesus has set me free. Yes, Jesus is the glorious Emancipator!

This hymn reminds us of all that Jesus freed us from.

Freedom from all the carnal affections,

Freedom from envy, hatred and strife;

Freedom from vain and worldly ambitions,

Freedom from all that saddened my life.

Freedom from pride and all sinful follies,

Freedom from love and glitter of gold;

Freedom from evil, temper and anger,

Glorious freedom, rapture untold.

Freedom from fear with all of its torments,

Freedom from care with all of its pain;

Freedom in Christ, my blessed Redeemer,

He who has rent my fetters in twain.

Some of these words may seem unusual to us in our world today, but we as Christians, know exactly what they means. Freedom through Jesus, the glorious Emancipator.

Jesus Himself spoke very similar words to the lyrics of this song in John chapter 8. Let’s see what He had to say. “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth and the truth will set you free.” (John 8:31b-32 – NIV)

Yes, freedom comes from Jesus, but from His own words we see that we need to be doing something. We are to hold to His teaching. Learn it. Know it. Live it. Be it.

We also see from this passage that it is truth that sets us free. Jesus’ truth.

It seems very simple, but when I read the words of the old hymn mentioned earlier, I can see where I still may be held in bondage. Perhaps there are still some critical pieces that need work. Somebody, please throw me a file!

Someone is willing to help me escape from the bondage of sin. That someone is Jesus.

The good news for all of us is that He can be the glorious Emancipator for each of us. Not just a chosen few or the select. But all. Even the vilest offender in Jesus’ arms is free from the bondage of sin.

Are you burdened with sin? Are you held in the bondage of sin? Do you wish to be free from it all? If so, I can introduce you to the glorious Emancipator. His truth and freedom exceeds all you could ever imagine.

Once I was bound by sin’s galling fetters,

Chained like a slave, I struggled in vain;

But I received a glorious freedom,

When Jesus broke my fetters in twain.

Refrain:

Glorious freedom, wonderful freedom,

No more in chains of sin I repine!

Jesus the glorious Emancipator,

Now and forever He shall be mine.

Grace and peace be yours in abundance,

How Shall I Live?

One of my Grandpa Rich’s favorite programs was the Gaither Gospel Hour. It meant so much to him since he grew up in a musical family.

IMAG1492I must admit, I enjoy watching an episode or two of this same show. The musical talent combined on the stage of each program is staggering. And of course, the music they sing brings joy to my soul, because they are about my loving Father, my gracious Savior, and my guide, the Holy Spirit.

Last evening was no different. The program was titled “Amazing Grace.” They began with a beautiful arrangement of Amazing Grace and ended with I Then Shall Live.

I was captured by the lyrics of the last verse of I Then Shall Live.

Your kingdom come around and through and in me;

Your power and glory let them shine through me.

Your Hallowed name, oh may I bear with honor;

And may Your living Kingdom come in me.

The Bread of Life, O’ may I share with honor;

And may You feed a hungry world through me.[i]

Wow! Those are words to live by. Living a life in which God’s Kingdom is visible. Living a life of honor. Living a life so that others might see God within me and desire the same.

Oh, I know I don’t live like this all the time. And to be honest, I couldn’t live as I do without God’s Spirit leading me. Without God’s Words resonating within my heart and head daily. Without knowing that Jesus was willing to take my sin and pay my debt.

I believe it all comes down to a willingness to allow God to work in me. If I continually choose to be drawn into sin, I couldn’t possibly hope to live a life described in this song. If I continually choose to put my needs and desires above God’s, I would never be able to read these lyrics with honesty. If I continually choose to turn my back on those in need, my words would be gibberish without meaning.

I’m convicted by the lyrics. I’m pressed to see what is missing in my life. I must be willing to make the necessary changes to live a life of honor.

Galatians 2:20 (NIV) tells me how to do this. “I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” I must crucify myself and all that goes along with me. My selfishness, my pride, my earthly nature, my busyness…me.

I pray that you’ll be encouraged by these words. I may not be where I need to be, but I am in a better place than when I started this journey. May I live an honorable life. May others see Jesus in me. May God’s Kingdom receive all the glory. Amen.

Grace and peace be yours in abundance,

A New Day Dawning

Years ago, as a child, I had the opportunity to meet the Good Twins. They were traveling through Upstate New York and they stopped by our small congregation. I vividly remember their music filling the small church building where my father ministered.

IMAG1492Years later as a young mother and minster’s wife, I had the opportunity to meet them once again. They performed for yet another small congregation, but this time in Ohio. They hadn’t changed. Their music was just as delightful as I remembered and their kindness was unforgettable.

One of our daughters became ill during the concert and fell asleep in one of the pews. After tearing down their equipment and before leaving, they each stopped by to say goodbye to little miss Candace. It was a touching moment for us.

I recall one of their songs. I can hear it in my mind just as if they were standing here singing it this morning. Their voices clear and with harmonies that can only be found in siblings and even more so with twin brothers. Read through the lyrics of “New World Coming.”

There’s a New World Coming
And it’s just around the bend.
There’s a new world coming
This one’s coming to an end.

There’s a new voice calling
You can hear it if you try.
And it’s growing stronger
With each day that passes by.

There’s a brand new morning
Rising clear and sweet and free.
There’s a new day dawning
That belongs to you and me.

Yes a new world’s coming
The one we’ve had visions of.
Coming in peace, coming in joy, coming in love.[i]

Now you may recognize this song from another source, Mama Cass. While I am unsure of her intent, the Good Twins sang this song with Christ in mind. When we allow Jesus to be the ruler of our hearts, each day is a brand new day and the new world is definitely heaven.

And as a Christian, I know for certain that Jesus offers new life and a new world in peace, joy and love.

But these are not my words or my ideas. Let’s read through some of Jesus’ words as He spoke of such a life and world.

“Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life.” (John 3:14-15 – NIV)

“Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” (John 4:13-14 – NIV)

“I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty.” (John 6:35 – NIV)

“I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” (John 8:12b – NIV)

“If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (John 8:31b-32 – NIV)

“I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” (John 10:10b – NIV)

“I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die.” (John 11:25-26 – NIV)

“In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.” (John 14:2-4 – NIV)

“I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” (John 14:6 – NIV)

Of course this is just a partial list of what Jesus had to say. Just a sampling. But in this small group of verses we recognize that the blessed new day the Good Twins sang of only comes through Jesus. It is only through Him that we can believe the words to this song.

Well, today is a new day. The sun has risen and it looks to be a bright day here in Colorado. But as I look to this day on my spiritual journey, I can say it too is a bright day. For my today belongs to Jesus. He holds it in His hands.

This same assurance can belong to you today. It’s available to anyone who seeks Jesus and gives their life to Him. There is a new world coming and it is just around the bend. There is a new day dawning and it belongs to you and me. Don’t you think it’s about time to enjoy life with Jesus?

Forget Not

If you’ve read my blog for any period of time, you know that I have verses of Scripture all over the walls of my home. I have note cards with passages at hand and I even have a set of Scripture cards that created several years ago. I love God’s Word!

Why? Because God intended for His Word to:

  • keep us steadfast (Psalm 119:5)
  • keep us from sinning (Psalm 119:11)
  • find delight (Psalm 119:26)
  • open our eyes (Psalm 119:18)
  • help us remember all that He has done (Psalm 119:27)
  • strengthen us (Psalm 119:28)
  • teach us (Psalm 119:33)
  • direct our paths (Psalm 119:35)
  • keep our eyes focused on things He values (Psalm 119:37)
  • preserve our lives (Psalm 119:37)
  • remind us of His promises (Psalm 119:41)
  • give us hope (Psalm 119:43)
  • offer freedom (Psalm 119:45)
  • comfort us when we are suffering (Psalm 119:50)
  • provide a theme for our song (Psalm 119:54)
  • keep us from going astray (Psalm 119:67)
  • be precious (Psalm 119:72)
  • give understanding (Psalm 119:73)
  • meditate upon (Psalm 119:78)
  • show us what is trustworthy (Psalm 119:86)
  • be eternal and stand firm (Psalm 119:89)
  • make us wise (Psalm 119:98)
  • keep our feet from every evil path (Psalm 119:101)
  • be sweet (Psalm 119:103)
  • light and guide our feet (Psalm 119:105)
  • provide stability (Psalm 119:113)
  • protect (Psalm 119:114)
  • uphold (Psalm 119:117)
  • remove fear (Psalm 119:120)
  • give discernment (Psalm 119:125)
  • help us understand every wrong path (Psalm 119:128)
  • redeem (Psalm 119:134)
  • provide meditation (Psalm 119:148)
  • preserve life (Psalm 119:149)
  • follow our entire lives (Psalm 119:152)
  • show us His compassion (Psalm 119:156)
  • point us to truth (Psalm 119:160)
  • bring joy (Psalm 119:162)
  • provide peace (Psalm 119:165)
  • teach us to wait (Psalm 119:166)
  • sustain (Psalm 119:175)

That is a long list why I love God’s Word. And this is just from one section of Scripture! When we are students and studiers of God’s Word, He will lead and direct us to passages that will help us throughout our day. Positive words. Encouraging words. Thought-provoking words. Convicting words. How blessed we are by having a Bible nearby.

If you haven’t thought of the benefits of God’s Word recently, perhaps a little perusing of Psalm 119 will remind you of what God has provided. I am reminded of another passage that David wrote. Psalm 103:2 (NIV) says, “Praise the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits.”

That’s my goal today. To remember all that God has done for me through His Word. Maybe you can do the same?

Grace and peace be yours in abundance,

Donna
