Mammogram Monday

You’ve heard the phrase, “it’s all fun and games until someone gets hurt” right? Well I’ve experienced this first hand.

 

My friend and I carried the same health insurance and as part of their preventative plan offered walk-in mammograms for women. To make this experience more enjoyable and endurable, my friend Lori and I decided to go through this process together. Mammogram Monday’s were born.

 

We’d meet, go have our mammograms and then enjoy lunch. What fun we’d have. We would laugh. We would chat. We enjoyed one another’s company. We looked forward to Mammogram Monday’s.

 

Mammogram Monday’s were fun until I received news that I needed to go in for a deep tissue mammogram. They had found something and wanted to get a better look.

 

Mammogram Monday’s were no longer fun.

 

In fact, Mammogram Monday’s have stopped altogether because I had to start making appointments for my mammograms and I had to go every six months.

 

I wonder if these biblical characters felt the same way.

 

Adam and Eve (Genesis 1-3)

Bathsheba (2 Samuel 11-12)

Esther (Esther 1-4)

Jonah (Jonah 1-2)

Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego (Daniel 3)

King Belshazzar (Daniel 5)

Lazarus (John 11:1-44)

Paul (Acts 91-19)

Eutychus (Acts 20:7-12)

 

These are just a few examples of things going along well and suddenly everything changes.

 

Perhaps you know how this feels. Maybe it was your marriage that you thought was fine. Or maybe your job. It could possibly be an issue with your child or even your church. Everything seemed to be good and then suddenly, something happened that changed everything. Suddenly, there is heartache. Disappointment. Discouragement. Grief.

 

During these difficult times, I know I have a heavenly Father who cares for me. I know that Jesus is touched. I know that the Holy Spirit is within me to comfort me. There is certainly no reason for any of us to go through these situations on our own.

 

There is an older hymn that reassures me that in fact Jesus does care. It may be exactly what you need to hear today. If so, please take the time to read through these wonderful lyrics and perhaps listen to a version of this hymn by clicking here.

 

And as a reminder that God does care for you, 1 Peter 5:7 (NIV) also reassures us that God does in fact care and that He wants us to lean upon Him. “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.”

What wonderful words of encouragement and hope! I am so thankful for a loving God and caring Savior. I am sure my struggles in this life would have been overwhelming had it not been for their loving kindness and caring hearts. God’s mighty hand has indeed lifted me up (1 Peter 5:6) through these difficult times. Can you say the same?

 

I continue to go for a mammogram every six months. It’s not as fun as it used to be, but I know the benefits of preventative medicine and I intend to continue. But I do miss the companionship and fun Lori and I had on those Mammogram Monday’s. Just a little plug for women’s health here. Ladies, when was your last mammogram?

Summer of Love

It is summer…well officially there are still three days remaining to the spring season, but the temperatures are reaching 90° or close to it, so I’d say it’s summer!

 

A few summers ago, the church I attend celebrated the season with “Summer of Love” being our theme. The world was remembering 1969, so we utilized that year for our theme, décor, and design.

 

There were events scheduled throughout the summer with one being a large worship service on July 4th at a local park. There was music, worship, preaching and communion held as we gathered to share our faith in this open arena.

 

We had a love bus. An older Volkswagen van that was painted with a 60’s theme and it had our “Summer of Love” logo painted on the front. At the end of the summer, a name was drawn from the names we collected throughout the summer and that person was given the love bus.

 

Throughout the summer, church staff were encouraged to take the love bus to their neighborhood. I took the love bus home one evening. I sat outside with a cooler filled with popsicles and passed them out to my neighbors. It was a great opportunity to share a cool refreshment with them as well as what was happening at my church.

 

The morning after this small event, I was seen driving the love bus back to church by a friend. She called me later and said she saw me and was so excited to see the love bus out and about.

 

I recall how excited the folks at church were that summer. They anticipated what might happen next. They looked forward to being with other believers during weekend services. They wanted to be part of the happenings.

 

I wonder if it wasn’t somewhat like this as Jesus traversed through Galilee. The anticipation. The sights. The healings. The crowds. The teachings. Jesus. It must have been so exciting for the folks of these small villages to host the Messiah.

 

I also wonder where the excitement is. Shouldn’t we be excited to be at church on a weekend without a publicity plan or a media blitz or a sensational program? Oh I get it, Jesus isn’t there, but the message is the same. His message is still being taught. There still should be excitement over that.

 

I must admit, I’m feeling a bit “eegh” about heading to church myself. Not because my faith is wavering or because something has happened to make me feel this way. It’s just what I’m feeling. This post is really more for me than for you, my reader.

 

But you know what I’m talking about. You know, “it’s Sunday morning and I feel like being lazy today” kind of feeling. Or, “it’s the only full day that I have to spend with my family this week” kind of feeling. Or, “this has been a crazy week” kind of feeling. Or, “the mountains are calling my name” kind of feeling. Or, “put whatever excuse you want to put here” kind of feeling.

 

We all get it. It happens to all of us. But we must regain the excitement of being in God’s presence. So let’s take a look at some Scripture to see the importance of being in God’s presence. Then maybe, we’ll regain some of the excitement we lack.

 

God assured the Hebrew nation that His Presence would be with them and that they would find rest in His Presence. “The Lord replied, ‘My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.’” (Exodus 33:14 – NIV)

 

Deuteronomy 12:7 (NIV) mentions that rejoicing is in order in God’s presence because of His blessings. “There, in the presence of the Lord your God, you and your families shall eat and shall rejoice in everything you have put your hand to, because the Lord your God has blessed you.”

 

Ezra 9:15 (NIV) reminds us of our guilt and that we find repentance in God’s presence. “O Lord, God of Israel, you are righteous! We are left this day as a remnant. Here we are before you in our guilt, though because of it not one of us can stand in your presence.”

 

King David knew he would find joy in God’s presence. “You have made known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand.” (Psalm 16:11 – NIV)

 

Psalm 31:20 (NIV) tells us that in God’s presence, we find security. “In the shelter of your presence you hide them from the intrigues of men; in your dwelling you keep them safe from accusing tongues.”

 

There is light in God’s presence. “Blessed are those who have learned to acclaim you, who walk in the light of your presence, O Lord.” (Psalm 89:15 – NIV)

 

We listen and learn in God’s presence. “So I sent for you immediately, and it was good of you to come. Now we are all here in the presence of God to listen to everything the Lord has commanded you to tell us.” (Acts 10:33 – NIV)

 

In 1 John 3:19 (NIV) we find we belong to the truth and are at rest in His presence. “This then is how we know that we belong to the truth, and how we set our hearts at rest in his presence.”

 

With all of these blessings I find by being in God’s presence, why am I not as excited as I should be to be with Him? I can come up with yet more excuses, but what I need to spend my time doing is getting excited. To get out of the doldrums of the summer and have a great desire to be in God’s presence. That’s what I need to do.

 

So today that is my plan. Read through these verses again and let His joy, rest, truth and safety flood my soul with excitement. I choose today to let His presence fill me with His excitement. Are these the actions you need to take today? If so, will you join me?

 

The “Summer of Love” and the love bus were fun. I’ll admit it. But I cannot rely on my church, my friends, or my minister to bring excitement to my spiritual life. I must do that by being in God’s presence. And that is exactly where I’m headed.

Today is the Day

Today is Father’s Day. A day set aside to celebrate the wonderful father’s in our lives. It is no exception for me. I love my Dad. We’ve held on to another through some rough and difficult times. We’ve laughed with one another through the funny times. We’ve cried with one another through disappointing times. But most of all, we’ve loved one another through them all. Happy Father’s Day Dad! I love you!

 

Today is also my Mom’s birthday. Happy birthday Mom! I love you!

 

Since it is also a Sunday, I’m reposting an older piece. I pray that you will find encouragement. Grace!

 

Prayer in the Laundry Room

 

Last year, my dryer went on the fritz. Mason worked on it several times and we thought that perhaps it was repaired, but finally, it quit.

 

I made multiple trips to the Laundromat, and then we decided it was time to begin the search for a newer washer and dryer.

 

We found the perfect set. On sale. In red. So it was purchased and delivered, with the old washer and dryer to be taken out at that point.

 

They were beautiful! My laundry room is quite small and these heavy duty machines take up most of the floor space, but they are beautiful.

 

We didn’t purchase the bases (they were a little costly) so I practically have to sit on the floor to move clothes from the washer to the dryer, but they are beautiful.

 

There is no room to turn around in the laundry room now, but my washer and dryer are beautiful.

 

The owner’s manual was a delight to read. Pages and pages filled with the functions each machine will perform. Many of which I have yet to use. They did send the CliffsNotes version for each manual to hang on the side of the pair, in case I’m in too much of a hurry to read the entire manual to determine which setting to use.

 

But the greatest feature of these machines is that if something goes wrong; like if they quit working, or if the lights stay on for no reason, or if the door won’t shut, or any number of issues, I simply call customer service.

 

After reaching a person in customer service, they will ask to speak to the washer or the dryer. Yes, they will.

 

I am to hold the phone up to the malfunctioning machine and then I am to move a knob to a specific location. The machine will then speak to the customer service representative.

 

The machine will tell the customer service representative exactly what the issue is and why it has refused to work. I hope the issue won’t include the pile of towels sitting on top of the machine, or that the door is slammed just a touch to harshly on occasion, or that this family simply does too much laundry.

 

Oh the perils in the laundry room!

 

Isn’t it wonderful that our heavenly Father is waiting for us to communicate with Him? Unfortunately, we take God for granted, believing that He will always be there, even if we don’t speak to Him. And we sometimes wait until something has gone wrong before opening the line of communication with Him.

 

If we only pray to God when there are tough situations in our lives, we will never know the joy of praying to Him when life is good.

 

Psalm 100:4 tells us to “Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name.” Praising God through prayer is such a freeing expression. Why would you want to praise Him? Don’t hesitate to praise Him daily.

 

Psalm 34:1 says that we are to continually praise Him. “I will extol the Lord at all times; his praise will always be on my lips.” Praise through prayer is to be continual. Always. Non-stop.

 

I love Ephesians 3:20. It is at the end of Paul’s prayer to the Ephesian church. He says, “Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.” When we know God will do more than we could ever imagine, it is much easier to drop to our knees in prayer.

 

Yes there will be trials. Yes there will be suffering, but with God on our side, why wouldn’t we seek Him? Why wouldn’t we run to Him in every situation? To be honest, that is a hard question to answer. Or maybe it isn’t hard, it’s just complicated.

 

For me, I sometimes fail and don’t pray to Him on a regular basis because I’m too busy. Sometimes I forget to praise Him. On occasion it takes a painful situation to bring me to Him. I don’t want to be that kind of person. I want to be in communication with God from the moment I wake up until the time my eyes close in sleep. Praising Him all the day long.

 

Won’t you join me? Spend a moment right now giving praise to your heavenly Father. Thank Him for His blessings and His grace. Let Him know how much you love Him. How you adore Him. How without Him, your life would have no meaning. Tell Him how sorry you are for not praying as often as you should or for taking Him for granted.

 

With great patience, God is waiting. Waiting for you to talk to Him. To tell Him all about your day. The good and the bad.

 

Fortunately, we haven’t had to call customer service for our washer or dryer. Yet. I know the day will come, but until then, I will continue to use this pair as I usually do. But, I will be praying in the process.

He Is

I heard a song years ago that I thought was unique. The songwriters went through the Books of the Bible and mention how Jesus was presented or represented or even what He does in each book. I heard it again yesterday.

 

So today, I bring you the lyrics to this and a link to where you can listen to it as well. I pray that you will be encouraged by this piece of music and that perhaps it is one way to memorize the Books of the Bible. I pray that you might also be encouraged by the many characteristics of our Savior.

Warning!

My new car has a system in place to warn me that I’m nearly running out of gas. Now, most cars have some sort of warning, like a little light, but the makers of my vehicle want to ensure I know when my gas tank is low.

 

At first I get a little gas pump light. This comes on when I have about 30 miles until my tank is empty.

 

If I don’t stop almost immediately, that number (30) is replaced with dashes.

 

And if I again don’t stop immediately, the bar that tells me how much gas is in my tank begins to flash.

 

This all happens within a few miles of knowing that I need gas. It hasn’t happened every time I’ve needed gas, but a few times I’ve been warned, perhaps excessively, to put gas in my tank!

 

As we look through Scripture, there are warnings for us to look at and to pay attention to. There may not be a triple warning system in place, but when God says it once, He means it. Let’s take a look at some of them.

 

What I’m going to point out here are headings above a verse or passage of Scripture, which then go on to tell of what we are to be aware of and what danger we might confront.

 

Warning against adultery

“My son, pay attention to my wisdom, listen to my words of insight, that you may maintain discretion and your lips may preserve knowledge. For the lips of an adulteress drip honey, and her speech is smoother than oil; but in the end she is bitter as gall, sharp as a double-edged sword.” (Proverbs 5:1-4 – NIV)

 

Warnings against folly

“My son, if you have put up security for your neighbor, if you have struck hands in pledge for another, if you have been trapped by what you said, ensnared b the words of your mouth, then do this, my son, to free yourself, since you have fallen into your neighbor’s hands: go and humble yourself; press your plea with your neighbor! Allow no sleep to your eyes, no slumber to your eyelids. Free yourself, like a gazelle from the hand of the hunter, like a bird from the snare of the fowler.” (Proverbs 6:1-5 – NIV)

 

Warning against hypocrisy

“Then Jesus said to the crowds and to the disciples: ‘The teachers of the law and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat. So you must obey them and do everything they tell you. But do not do what they do, for they do not practice what they preach.” (Matthew 23:1-3 – NIV; see also Mark12:38-40; Luke 12:1-12 and Luke 20:45-47)

 

Warnings from Israel’s history

“For I do not want you to be ignorant of the fact, brothers, that our forefathers were all under the cloud that they all pass through the sea…Nevertheless, God was not pleased with most of them; their bodies were scattered over the desert…These things happened to them as examples and were written down as warnings for us, on whom the fulfillment of the ages has come.” (1 Corinthians 10:1-13 – NIV)

 

Warnings against idolatry

“Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteous and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness? What harmony is there between Christ and Belial? What does a believer have in common with an unbeliever? What agreement is there between the temple of God and idols? For we are the temple of the living God. As God has said: ‘I will live with them, and I will be their God, and they will be my people.’” (2 Corinthians 6:14-16 – NIV)

 

Warning against idleness

“In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, we command you, brothers, to keep away from every brother who is idle and does not live according to the teaching you received from us.” (2 Thessalonians 3:6 – NIV)

 

Warning to pay attention

“We must pay more careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away.” (Hebrews 2:1 – NIV)

 

Warning against unbelief

“See to it, brothers, that none of you has a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God.” (Hebrews 3:12 – NIV)

 

Warning against becoming spiritually stagnant

“We have much to say about this, but it is hard to explain because you are slow to learn. In fact, thought by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God’s word all over again. You need milk, not solid food! Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.”(Hebrews 5:11-14 – NIV)

 

Warning

“Make every effort to live in peace with all men and to be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord. See to it that no one misses the grace of God and that no bitter root grows up to cause trouble and defile many. See that no one is sexually immoral, or is godless like Esau, who for a single meal sold his inheritance rights as the oldest son.” (Hebrews 12:14-16 – NIV)

 

Warning against Antichrists

“I am writing these things to you about those who are trying to lead you astray.” (1 John 2:18-27 – NIV)

 

Quite a few warnings listed throughout Scripture…and these are just a few. But what I see here is how urgent these messages are. We must be warned (perhaps multiple times), but then we must listen and take the warnings to heart.

 

My favorite warning is the one from Hebrews 2:1 (NIV).  “We must pay more careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away.” Here we find the triple warning lights going off. “More.” “Careful.” “Attention.” Don’t miss it. What are we to “pay more careful attention” to? What we have heard or learned. And why are we to “pay more careful attention?” So that we don’t drift away.

 

There are good reasons for warnings. My car’s warning system is there for my well-being. God’s Word includes the most important warnings for spiritual living. Now it is up to us to heed the warnings. Are you willing to do so?
