A Tow

A while back as I was out and about, there were two vehicles in front of me with their flashing lights on. The rear car was being towed by the front car. It wasn’t a safe situation, so I kept my distance.

www.crh.noaa.gov

As I followed this pair, I realized that neither of them were very good drivers. If one swayed, the other followed. They were in both lanes of this two lane road and also on the shoulder.

On occasion sparks would fly. The chain between these two vehicles didn’t seem to be the safest way to transport the obviously disabled car.

And then it happened. The chain broke and both vehicles took a quick right turn and stopped by the side of the road. I was thankful that while these two vehicles were figuring out their next strategy that I was able to get around them safely.

The swerving, swaying, jerking, unexpected movements and unsteadiness remind me that sometimes in our lives we seem to be following God’s plan well. And then something causes us to become unsteady and get off track. It could be an incident. It could be someone. It could be an attitude. It could be a temptation.

Whatever it might be, we suddenly find ourselves on the side of the road of life in a broken-down vehicle and what seems to be the one who took us down this road.

When we are in this position, we have the best roadside assistant plan available. Grace. We can call on the One who is able to do far more than we could imagine. We can call on the One who has lavished His great love upon us. We can call on the One whose mission is to seek and save the lost. We simply need to call Him.

But what is best is if we strive to never get in this position at all.

So how can we be steadfast in our daily walk and not wind up on the side of the road?

Ask for God’s help! Psalm 51:10 (NIV) gives us David’s prayer. Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.” David realized that a steadfast spirit would wane with the situations of life and that only God could restore it within him.

Know that God will come to your aid just when you need it. 1 Peter 5:10 (NIV) says, “And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast. To him be the power forever and ever. Amen.” What a blessing to be able to approach God’s throne with this request.

What are the results of being steadfast? Psalm 112:6-8 (NIV) assures us, Surely he will never be shaken; a righteous man will be remembered forever. He will have no fear of bad news; his heart is steadfast, trusting in the Lord. His heart is secure, he will have no fear; in the end he will look in triumph on his foes.”

Are you catching some of these phrases? renew a steadfast spirit,” “restore and make you strong, firm, and steadfast,” “no fear of bad news,” “his heart is secure,” “trust,” “look in triumph on his foes.” What promises! And God can make these promises because He is steadfast in all His ways.

Psalm 111:7-8 (NIV) tells us that our God is steadfast. The works of his hands are faithful and just; all his precepts are trustworthy. They are steadfast forever and ever, done in faithfulness and uprightness.” I don’t know about you, but that spurs me on to “hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful!” (Hebrews 10:23 – NIV)

By staying the course, sticking to the narrow path, we know we are heading in the right direction. I pray that God’s words would resonate in your mind when you are tempted to get off track.

Grace and peace be yours in abundance,

Happy Birthday to Me!

I turned 55 this week.

My youngest granddaughter turned 2 two days before my birthday. We celebrated our birthdays together. I just loved my Minnie Mouse birthday cake!

On my birthday, I was able to be part of special baptism service. As long as I live I will always remember this precious lady on my birthday.

I have been excited to turn 55. Mainly because of the discounts restaurants give to this aging group. It’s not the price that pleases me as much as the portion size. I just can’t eat everything a restaurant puts in front of me.

mason's cardLast night on my way home from Bible study, I stopped by Hancock fabrics for a couple of things. This is great. At the register the clerk said, “It’s senior discount day. Are you 55 or older?” My face lit up and I proudly said, “I just turned 55 yesterday!” “Then you get a 20% discount on your purchase today.” I laughed as I got into my car with my small bag of goodies, but it’s alright to get old (er).

sand

I need more sand and a bigger box!

I’ve been wanting to get some of that kinetic sand for my beach themed office. I didn’t want it to play in, but I want to put it in a container under my desk so I can put my feet in it and feel like I’m at the beach (my first thought was to remove the carpet in the room and fill it with sand, but my husband really didn’t like that idea). Kinetic sand is kind of expensive, so I’ve never bought it. I did find a great “recipe” for making your own and I had planned on doing that. But I opened my gift from my husband and bought me a box of the sand. I was so happy. And the card he got for me was just beautiful…and beach themed. He knows me so well.

I received another card from someone who knows me pretty well too. This is what the card said.

Jesus, the Faithful One

The confidence we have…

The trust we hold…

The hope we carry…

Rest in His faithfulness.

Every promise He has made

He purposes to fulfill.

He has the authority

To accomplish all He has spoken.

His power is limitless…

His character changeless…

His love endless!

Best birthday present ever! Jesus!

And a reminder of who Jesus is and what He has done in my life. The promises. The power. The love. How truly blessed I am.

It’s nice being the center of attention. Birthday lunches with friends. Gifts. Cards. Birthday wishes. Phone calls from family and friends. These are so nice and I wouldn’t trade them for the world.

But I would trade it all for Jesus.

I pray that you too have found confidence and trust and hope in Jesus. I pray that you believe His promises. I pray that you understand that His power is limitless, His character is changeless and His love is endless.

Grace and peace be yours in abundance,

Read Carefully

I’ve been building a doll house for my granddaughter. Some of the instructions are miserable to understand. Kind of like a sewing pattern. For instance, at one point I had to look up words like “pediment” and “gusset” to find out what I was looking for.

And then, if the instructions aren’t difficult enough, the parts sheet is such tiny print that I had to buy a new magnifying glass to even read the words!

So far, there hasn’t been any “funny” instructions or guidelines to follow, but I’ve heard there have been some unusual and unique instructions on some products. Take a look at a few:

  • On a Sears hairdryer it says, “Do not use while sleeping.”
  • On a Rowenta iron, the words “Do not iron clothes on body” are in the instruction manual.
  • “Fragile. Do not drop” are on the product label for a Boeing 757.
  • And just in case you might not know. “Warning. Contains nuts” is on the can of Sainbury’s peanuts.
  • Apparently someone needed to know, “Wearing of this garment (a Superman costume) does not enable you to fly.”[i]

When we take the time to read instructions and understand how to use a product or put something together, we are able to do so without much difficulty.

God knows how important good instructions can be. Scripture is filled with advice when it comes to this topic.

God asks that we listen to instruction. We would be wise to listen and accept instruction, whether it is His or from a wise person.

“I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you and watch over you.” (Psalm 32:8)

“Hold on to instruction, do not let it go; guard it well, for it is your life.” (Proverbs 4:13)

“Listen to advice and accept instruction, and in the end you will be wise.” (Proverbs 19:20)

Some benefits of listening to God’s instructions can be seen in these verses.

“Listen to my instruction and be wise; do not ignore it.” (Proverbs 8:33)

“Whoever gives heed to instruction prospers and blessed is he who trusts in the Lord.” (Proverbs 16:20)

“When a mocker is punished, the simple gain wisdom; when a wise man is instructed, he gets knowledge.” (Proverbs 21:11)

By following God’s direction, He leads us in the way we should go.

“Direct me in the path of your commands, for there I find delight.” (Psalm 119:35)

“A man’s steps are directed by the Lord. How then can anyone understand his own way?” (Proverbs 20:24)

“May the Lord direct your hearts into God’s love and Christ’s perseverance.” (2 Thessalonians 3:5)

There is no doubt about it, when we listen to God’s instruction, accept what He has asked, learn from what He has to say, and allow God to lead us throughout our lives, we will be wise, prosper and gain knowledge. Why then is it so difficult to do?

Because we want to get involved. We want to change the instructions. We think we know better than God and tweak the directions. Sometimes a little. Sometimes a lot. These are the times we get ourselves into trouble.

God has provided pages and pages filled with good advice and instruction. It’s all there for your use. Why not pick up God’s instruction manual and see what He has to say to you today?

“Apply your heart to instruction and your ears to words of knowledge.” (Proverbs 23:12)

Grace and peace be yours in abundance,

Gracious

Women’s Bible studies have started up again after the Christmas break. Because of weather and the break, my ladies that meet on Wednesday evening have yet to finish a chapter in the book we’re studying on the parables of Jesus. We’ve attempted this particular lesson twice before.

???????????????????????????????As I looked over the material again this morning in prep for tomorrow night, I read a line that finally caught my attention. So let’s count the number of times I’ve actually read this line.

I have already done this Bible study. So I read it the very first time I filled in the blanks. Then, in preparation to lead that time I read it at least one more time, possibly two.

I read this line in December to prepare for the lesson on that date (we cancelled because of weather). Then we attempted to get together again last week so I read the line (we cancelled because of weather). So again, this morning, I re-read the lesson material and this particular line yet again. Did you lose count? I did!

So here’s the line that has finally caught my attention.

“Once we accept grace for ourselves, we will be more gracious with others.”[i]

We are studying the parable of the workers in the vineyard from Matthew 20. Let’s recap that parable.

A landowner hires some men in the morning to harvest his crops and he sets an amount that he will pay them for their work. At three other times during the day, the landowner hires more men to work in his vineyard. No amount was mentioned for these workers, but the landowner said they would receive fair wage.

At the end of the day, the landowner paid his hired workers. Starting with the men who only worked an hour, he paid them the agreed upon contract amount that the first workers were to receive. The first workers thought for sure they would receive more since they worked longer. But no, the landowner paid the contracted amount.

The first workers became disgruntled and called the landowner unfair. But in his great kindness, the landowner called them “friends” and sent them on their way.

Sometimes it’s difficult for us to understand God’s graciousness. We hear of vial criminals turning their lives over to Jesus. How could God possibly shed His grace upon them? But according to Scripture we know that He does.

The reality is that I don’t deserve God’s grace either. I can agree with the Apostle Paul when he said, “Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners—of whom I am the worst.” (1 Timothy 1:15 – NIV)

But, because God has no desire to leave us in this state, “the grace of our Lord was poured out on me abundantly, along with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.” (1 Timothy 1:14 – NIV)

So let me take you back to the quote from above. “Once we accept grace for ourselves, we will be more gracious with others.” Knowing that I am the worst sinner and that God still desires to be gracious toward me points me to be more like Him and show grace to others.

I know, it’s more difficult than it sounds. Words are easier to say. But we are called to forgive as God has forgiven us.

So how do we do it? Through God’s Holy Spirit. As we allow God’s Spirit and Word to transform us, we can be more gracious toward others…and ourselves.

Who do you need to be gracious to today? The store clerk who just can’t seem to do anything right? The person who cut you off on your drive to work? Your child who just can’t seem to pick up after themselves? Yourself?

Let’s not forget that we are all dependent upon God’s grace. Without it, we would lost. Let’s make today a gracious day.

Grace and peace be yours in abundance,

Donna

“One More Time” – Monday Musical Musings

It’s Monday. There’s a lot going on for me this week, at work and at home. But in the midst of it all, I am reminded, yet again, to stop and remember what my life is all about.

I must remember Who I serve and belong to and I also must remember why I’m here.

IMAG1492It’s easy for us to get too busy with life. I suspect that why I love routine so much. Waking up at 5:30 am each morning ensures that I will have my quiet time with God. It’s not easy on some days, but I know the value of this practice and regardless of what’s going on in my life, I’m up and with God.

Last week in my daily devotion reading, I read a beautiful passage from Isaiah 43. Take a look at it from The Voice version. “See, you have nothing to fear. I, who made you, will take you back. I have chosen you, named you as My own. When you face stormy seas I will be there with you with endurance and calm; you will not be engulfed in raging rivers. If it seems like you’re walking through fire with flames licking at your limbs, keep going; you won’t be burned. Because I, the Eternal One, am your God. I am the Holy One of Israel, and I will save you.” (Isaiah 43:1b-3a – The Voice)

This passage goes on with beautiful words of encouragement from God. His love, His Name, His deliverance, His truth. These are all good words to remember as we go about our busy lives.

I heard this Gospel melody a while back and the words captured my attention. It is also a reminder to spend time with God and to praise Him one more time for all that He’s done in our lives.

I pray that you will find a piece of these words that will speak to your heart today. I pray that you will run to Jesus if you need to be with Him. And above all, I pray that you know that you’re not on this journey alone.

“One More Time”

Verse 1

Today I faced a mountain, once again it seemed so tall

I tried to climb but it seemed I would surely fall

So I knelt and called on Jesus and just as always I felt His presence

His hand of mercy lifted me just in time

Chorus:

I want to thank Him and I want to praise Him

His grace has been sufficient

And like before He’s given victory one more time

He was always standing by my side

When the valley was low, when the river was wide

So I want to thank Him and I want to praise Him one more time

Verse 2

Looking back upon this journey since the day I first met Him

Many times His love and mercy has rescued me

So again I come before Him

One more time I’ll stand to praise Him

For all His blessings, for He has been so good to me[i]
