For the Lord

I started a new Bible study this week about Gideon. I thought I knew the story of Gideon, but it’s already obvious that I haven’t taken the time to really know God’s story through Gideon. I can’t wait to see what God is going to teach me this semester!

I am always amazed (and shouldn’t be) at how what I am studying in one area is relevant to another. As I’ve looked at the first few verses about Gideon, I realized how important it is to share God’s love with my children and grandchildren. And then, to look at the repeated blog post for this week, only to find that it shares the same ideas that I’ve been studying all week. God is making an impression. He has my attention. Does He have yours?

Whistle Cup – Blogging A to Z

I received a precious birthday gift last year. It was a sterling silver whistle cup with a Skippy cartoon on the side with an inscription inside that says, “Skippy says blow whistle for more.” This cup belonged to my Dad and was given to his parents at his birth.

DSC04436Through my research I’ve found that the Skippy cartoon was created by Percy Crosby and it was a popular comic strip through the 1920’s and 1930’s. Skippy can be seen in his typical outfit of baggy pants, floppy shoes and hat and carrying his paint bucket, running past a picket fence in need to a good paint job.

I have held this little whistle cup (and accompanying baby spoon) close to my heart. It may not be priceless to the world, but to me, it certainly is.

While I love this little piece memorabilia from my Dad, I have received an even better gift from him. The gift of learning and knowing about Jesus. My parents were the first to say the name “Jesus” to me. They taught me songs about Him. They shared biblical stories of His actions. They opened my eyes and my heart to the greatest gift I could ever know. Eternal life with Jesus!

There are many things we can give our children and grandchildren in this world, but if we are not sharing our faith and Jesus with them, we have missed the best opportunity for them to hear God’s message. In our homes.

I would say that Jesus’ words in Matthew 28 are meant for our family as much as they are for the ends of the earth. We are to “make disciples.” Make disciples of our children and grandchildren. They must hear the Gospel and we must be sharing it.

I can’t really write this piece without bringing up the passage in Deuteronomy 6:7-9 (NIV). This passage tells us the importance of sharing God’s message with our children. “Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses on your gates.”

I believe the lesson learned from this Scripture is that every moment is a teaching moment. We should always be on the lookout for time to share God’s message with our children.

There are a couple of ladies in the Bible who knew how important this task is. They shared their faith with their son and grandson as he grew into a young man. And he was noticed. He was known for his knowledge and faith in God.

Lois and Eunice knew the importance of raising a child with God at the center of the family. Lois, the grandmother and Eunice, the mother of Timothy were Jewesses, who converted to Christianity. They were followers of Jesus and Paul had fond memories and respect for these two ladies.

We first hear of Timothy in Acts 16:1-3 when Paul traveled through Lystra. Timothy was spoken well of by the leaders of the Church in Lystra and had been raised by these godly women. Paul chose to take Timothy with him as he continued his ministry.

And of course, we have two letters written to Timothy by Paul. They were words of encouragement. They were words of wisdom. They were words of affection. Just read through the first five verses of 2 Timothy and you’ll see the emotion and connection to this family. Paul thought highly of the way they raised Timothy.

“I have been reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also.” (2 Timothy 1:5 – NIV) From generation to generation, this family understood the importance of sharing God’s message. Perhaps they remembered God’s words, also from Deuteronomy.

“Know therefore that the Lord your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commands.” (Deuteronomy 7:9 – NIV) What a promise from God and what a legacy we can leave to our children.

Yes, there are plenty of things we can hand down from generation to generation, and those things are important. But nothing can compare to passing down God’s Word and message to our future children and grandchildren. Nothing.

So how are you doing with this? Do your children (or grandchildren) know about your faith? Are God’s Words written around your home? Do you share God’s love with those in your household? What messages are your children hearing?

I would love to hear of some creative ways to do this and I’m sure others would as well. Why not tell us about them?

I am thankful for parents who took the time to share their faith with me. I have shared with my children and grandchildren, but there is always room for improvement. So as I continue on this journey, I will hold on to God’s Words and promises. He is faithful and He will do exactly as He said. I believe it.

Frixion

I discovered erasable pens several years ago. I have found them to be very useful for a couple areas of my life.

firxionI make mistakes and sometimes my handwriting is unreadable. So for years I used pencils when working on Bible studies. With a pencil, I could erase my errors and re-write a section so it was legible. However, pencil seems to fade or smudge. When an erasable pen showed up on the market, I had to try it. I was not disappointed. In fact, it’s gone beyond my dreams and comes in multiple colors as well as styles.

I have also found that these pens are fabulous for doodling. Not that doodling needs to be perfect, but if I make a huge mistake on one of my pieces of art, I can re-do it.

Now the thing is, this ink is not permanent. So clearly, there are times when these pens shouldn’t be used. For instance, signing checks or any legal document. The package even states these pens are not recommended for such use.

I recently purchased another package of pens and read some interesting facts about them. First of all, they are refillable. I don’t know how it’s possible. They don’t open. They don’t twist. I don’t see how these pens could possibly be refilled. But now, I have to go to the website to check on that one.

And then this is great. “If pen is exposed to temperature that reaches 140°F, the ink will be colorless when writing. To restore color, cool to at least 14°F in freezer and the ink will again write in color.” What a cool pen! Now I don’t know if it’s like invisible ink at 140 degrees and then if you put the paper in the freezer it will appear. But at least I know this is a possibility.

Oh the things that amaze and amuse me.

Just think of how amazed I would have been had I lived while Jesus walked this earth. Watching Him perform miracles and listening to His teaching would have kept me on the edge of my seat!

Surely you would too.

Just think of the passage in Mark 6:30-44. Here we see the account of the feeding of the five thousand. Jesus takes five loaves and two fish, blesses them, breaks them, and then proceeds to feed the crowd with baskets of food left over.

On another occasion Jesus meets Peter, Andrew, James, and John. They had been fishing all night long and hadn’t caught a single fish. Jesus asked them to throw their nets into the water and amazingly, they catch an astonishing amount of fish. But then, they walked away from it all to “fish for men.” (Luke 5:1-11) Perhaps the disciples were amused by Jesus as well.

One of my favorite real life stories from Scripture was Jesus’ encounter with Mary after His resurrection. She believes Him to be a gardener and asks “where the body of her Lord had been taken.” And with a single word, Jesus amazed Mary. He simply said her name. “Mary.” She immediately knew it was Jesus and nothing about her life would ever be the same (John 20:10-18).

Those who encountered Jesus were amazed by His words and His actions. Whether they were healed, raised from the dead, or forgiven of their sins, they knew something had changed. Their lives were changed by the Savior of the world.

Are you looking to be amazed by Jesus today? Keep your eyes open. You just might be amazed by the graciousness of our Lord and Savior.

Grace and peace be yours in abundance,

You know I love lists. Any list. A grocery list. A to do list. A list of instructions. Why? I love lists because if can check off the things that I’ve done.

DSC_0493I use Evernote at work and one of the features of this program is to create to do lists. I love that I can put little boxes next to the things I need to accomplish and then I love even more that I can put a check mark in the box when I have completed the task.

When I find lists in the Bible, I get excited. Until I realize that it’s not all that easy to put a check mark next to the items I have mastered. Take a look at this list from 1 Peter 3:8-9 (NIV).

Live in harmony

Be sympathetic

Love as brothers

Be compassionate

Be humble

Do not repay evil with evil

Do not repay insult with insult

Inherit a blessing

Oh I like the last one. I would love to inherit a blessing, but according to this passage, I have been called to live out these first seven items in order to receive the blessing. And not only that, I am to do all of these things while blessing others as well.

And to top it all off, these items fall under the heading, “Suffering for Doing Good.” In the midst of my suffering, mind you, suffering while I’m following God’s plan for my life, I am to check off the items on this list. Sounds pretty impossible doesn’t it?

It is when I try to do it on my own.

But with God’s Spirit, my heart becomes tender. Discord and strife are replaced by agreement. Evil thoughts and insults are discarded. Hatred removed and selfish ambitions are released to humility.

God searches for those who do what is right. God listens to the prayers of those who seek His guidance. And in the end, blesses beyond our imagination.

Perhaps today you will come face to face with a foe. If so, the words from 1 Peter 3:8-17 should be part of your daily Bible reading this morning. The encouragement found in these verses will guide your thoughts, your words and your actions.

You may also find encouragement from Jesus’ words found in Matthew 5:10-12 (NIV). “Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.”

God bless you!

Gettin’ Up There

I’ve recently been reminded of my age. I have a birthday next week and in some places I will be able to receive that wonderful “senior discount.” I know how old I am but I guess what I was reminded of is how long I’ve been doing what I’ve been doing.

Colorado Sunrise

Colorado Sunrise

You know, you hear of people retiring from teaching and then start all over again with another organization and soon the person has been teaching for 70 years. Or the couple who has made the Guinness World Record of being married the longest at over 85 years.

As a high school student, we “majored” in certain areas. I majored in music, home economics and business. Throughout my business courses, I picked up on the skills pretty quickly (except for the accounting classes…I always seemed to struggle in those). I was the fastest in my class at taking shorthand and then transcribing and typing what was dictated. I enjoyed being a secretary!

My first job came when I was 16 years old. I worked 14 hours a week at the church where my Dad ministered. I had my own office. I loved using the printing press (that would later be replaced by a copying machine). The hum of my IBM Selectric type writer was beautiful. My, how things have changed.

Through the years I have found myself as a secretary in many areas of businesses and fields. I’ve been a secretary for Clairol (the hair coloring people), an auto workers union, a group of attorneys, for hospice and several churches along the way.

I’ve managed to do a few other jobs, but for the most part, I’ve been a secretary for almost 40 years. And for the most part, I’ve loved every minute of it.

I’ve worked through the years at keeping my skills up with newest and greatest equipment. As mentioned earlier, that old printing press would soon be replaced by a copying machine. That Selectric typewriter was replaced by a word processor and ultimately a computer…the computer has even changed through the years from large, bulky pieces of equipment to slender laptops and IPads!

Shorthand has been replaced by typing meeting minutes or notes on a laptop. Most phone calls go to a personal cell phone, not the business line. Files and folders are now located on a computer not in a drawer. Even styles of writing and editing have changed. And there are probably a few other things that have changed through the years that I’ve had to keep learning.

My point is that even though I have had the skills for all these years, I’ve never been able to just say, “I’m done.” I’ve had to keep working toward the next element of technology to be a viable worker in my field.

It’s no different with our spiritual lives. We’ve accepted Jesus. We know to expect His return someday, but what are we to do in the meantime? We are to prepare ourselves for that coming. We are to keep learning. We are to work in field to bring others along. There is much work to be done.

So let’s look at a few verses that teach us what we can do to prepare ourselves for Jesus’ return.

“Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 – NIV)

“Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.” (2 Timothy 2:15 – NIV)

“In a large house there are articles not only of gold and silver, but also of wood and clay; some are for noble purposes and some for ignoble purposes. If a man cleanses himself from the latter, he will be an instrument for noble purposes, made holy, useful to the Maser and prepared to do any good work. Flee the evil desires of youth, and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.” (2 Timothy 2:20-22 – NIV)

“Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.” (James 1:22 – NIV)

“But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope.” (1 Peter 3:15 – NIV)

These are just a few things we find in Scripture that we can be working on while we wait for the Master to return. Let’s be prepared for that day. Let’s just do it.

I’m not a secretary any longer. I’m an executive assistant…even the name has changed. But to be honest, I like this change. I want to more than just a gal who types memos. I want to make a difference in the work place.

I want that same thing to be true of my spiritual live. I will always want more. I will always want to grow a little bit more. I will always want to be better at what I’m doing. I’m getting ready and will be prepared when Jesus returns. Will you?

Grace and peace be yours in abundance,

Donna
