Christmas in Nearly August (because I’ve already used Christmas in July)

I haven’t mentioned lately, but I love Christmas. Just in case you’d like to know, Christmas is 152 days away. Yahoo! I love the lights, the sounds, the scents, the purpose, the gift-giving and especially the music. I love it all. I can even tolerate a little snow on Christmas morning!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThere is Christmas music in my car at all times. I never know when I will be in the mood to listen to one of my favorite tunes. It could be when I’m feeling a little down or when I want to revisit happy memories or when my granddaughter is in the car or when I just want to listen to something fun.

From Michael Bublé to 98° to Jim Brickman to The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band to Andy Williams, I have them all in my car and enjoy each one depending on my mood. And for me, it never gets old.

There’s just something about Christmas music that brings joy to my soul. Rest to my weary body. Peace to my restless way of life.

For me, however, Christmas music isn’t the only way I am restored. More importantly, it isn’t my first “go to” to be restored. I know when I need restoration; I go to my heavenly Father. It is only in His arms that find real joy, real rest, and real peace.

Joy

Nehemiah gives such encouragement in chapter 8, verse 10 (NIV). He says, “The joy of the Lord is your strength.” When nothing else will do, God’s joy will give us the strength we need.

The book of Psalm says a lot about joy, but these two verses tell us of the joy God gives. “The Lord has done great things for us, and we are filled with joy.”(Psalm 126:3 – NIV) “Your statutes are my heritage forever; they are the joy of my heart.” (Psalm 119:111 – NIV)

The New Testament is also filled with verses on joy. These are just a couple. “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” (Romans 15:13 – NIV) “Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy, for you are receiving the goal of your faith, the salvation of your souls.” (1 Peter 1:8-9 – NIV)

Peace

Jesus states in John 14:27 (NIV), “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” Another of God’s glorious gifts he has given. His peace!

He also says, “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33 – NIV) It is only by being in Christ will we find true peace.

Paul tells us that Jesus is our peace in Ephesians 2:11 – NIV). Through this “peace,” all barriers can be broken down. There is unity. Hostility is banished. Now that is real peace.

Rest

“Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will rest secure.” (Psalm 16:9 – NIV) There is security in rest, but only when God is the center of that rest.

Psalm 62:5 (NIV) also tells us that rest is accompanied by hope. “Find rest, O my soul, in God alone; my hope comes from him.”

“A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest.” (Proverbs 16:10 – NIV) I love this little verse…should almost be a nursery rhyme.

And of course, Jesus’ words to us when we just can’t seem to take one more step. “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28 – NIV)

These are just a few of the ways God brings restoration to our lives and souls. With the help of the Holy Spirit, we can put these words into action. Then we will know that our joy, peace and rest come from God.

This is a Good Life

Good morning friends! I don’t believe I can write much today. Seems that I’ve aggravated my lower back injury (yet again) and I’m finding it difficult to sit at my desk without horrible pain. Today will be a short blog post!

Daytona Beach 021mI read through a Psalm yesterday that touched my heart. I then read it in The Voice translation and what an impact it has. So today, I’ll leave you with the words of King David with a fresh look at their meaning for our lives today. I pray that you will be uplifted and that you will agree, this is a good life!

“This is a good life—my heart is glad, my soul is full of joy, and my body is at rest. Who could want for more? You will not abandon me to experience death and the grave or leave me to rot alone. Instead, You direct me on the path that leads to a beautiful life. As I walk with You, the pleasures are never-ending, and I know true joy and contentment.” (Psalm 16:9-11 – The Voice)

Air Plants

If you know me well at all you know that I kill plants. Not that I mean to, but I find that I either over water or forget to water. I’ve never found the balance of caring for plants.

I will admit that I love seeing beautiful gardens. Maybe it’s because I’m so plant challenged that I’m in awe of anyone who is able to produce such beauty. Maybe it’s because I am reminded of my grandmother’s flower beds that she cared for so tenderly. Whatever the reason, seeing a beautifully landscaped garden warms my heart.

I’ve received plants as gifts in the past and as soon as I accepted them, I’ve known the fate of these unsuspecting beauties. They would soon wither up and die or their soil would be covered in mold.

Recently someone offered me a plant. I declined. I didn’t want another plant’s death on my hands.

Air plantHowever, in my new beach office, I wanted something green. So I remembered the Air Plant. Surely I could care for it. Well, actually my thought process was that it would take care of itself. You know, very little effort or work on my part. Ha!

I purchased two and brought them home. Then I did the research for how to care for these plants. It appears that these little gems capture their life-giving nutrients from the air and the sunshine. There’s no dirt (which is nice because remember I manage to get mold all over that stuff). However, they do need a good spritzing about once a week. And the spritzing needs to have some nutrients in it.

Air plant 2So my care-free plants that I so hoped to enjoy have turned out to be a little more work than I first imagined. So now I have to remember every Friday to give them a good spray. So far I’ve done my part and they actually seem to be growing!

I am reminded of the image in the Book of Isaiah when Israel was described as “…a garden without water.” (Isaiah 1:30b – NIV) They were a rebellious nation and had suffered. They were being punished for their rebellion.

But Isaiah continued to give Israel hope throughout the book and in Isaiah 58:11b (NIV) he assures them, “…you will be like a well-watered garden…”

Yes, if Israel was willing to put their rebellion behind them, if they were willing to stop the blaming and gossiping, if they were willing to give to those in need, if they did as God asked them, God would rescue them.

If Israel allowed God to lead them, they could once again be great. A great light would shine from Israel. Their broken lives could be repaired. Their ruined spirits could be restored. Through the Repairer and Restorer. God.

We have the choice to be one of these two gardens. If we are rebellious against God, then we can expect to be a garden without water. If we are obedient to God, then we can expect to be a well-watered garden.

Isaiah also spoke of the coming Messiah throughout this Messianic prophetic book. We know this Messiah to be Jesus. Jesus, the Living Water. “Whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him like a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” (John 4:14 – NIV)

Through Jesus we have the opportunity to be a well-watered garden, with abundant life.

Plants and gardens are green when water is present. We too can be green (spiritually healthy) when Jesus is present in our lives and when we seek out the watering holes.

The watering holes of prayer, Bible study, Bible reading, fellowship with other Christians, worship, and serving others. By continually visiting these watering holes, we will always be green and will have the Lord to guide us in all we say and do.

I haven’t done so well with the plant thing, but I’m so thankful that I am much better at tending to my spiritual life. I’m thankful that my relationship with Jesus showers Living Water upon me. I’m thankful that the “spiritual gardener” within me has a green thumb.

How are you doing with this? Are you green (spiritually)? Does the grass (your spiritual life) crunch under the footsteps of your day-to-day life? Are you parched? Are you feeling the drought of separation from God and His people?

There is an easy fix. A relationship with Jesus Christ in which you can have Living Water. And through the Living Water you will be bubbling with abundant life. Now, who wouldn’t want that?

Grace and peace be yours in abundance,

Mirrored Image

My seven-year-old granddaughter drew this picture of a butterfly. Isn’t it beautiful? As a grandparent, I thought it was beautiful just because she drew it. But then, she explained how she drew this picture.

butterflyShe took a crayon in each hand and as she drew the right side of the body, she mirrored the motion with her left hand. As she drew the upper portion of the right wing, she drew the upper portion of the left wing. Simultaneously, she created both sides of the butterfly to match the other.

You see, this butterfly is brilliantly beautiful!

Of course, we see this same idea in Scripture. That we are to be mirror images of Jesus. When we mirror Jesus, we must mirror His qualities and character. Matthew 5:48 and 1 Peter 1:16 tell us that we are to be perfect and holy because Jesus is perfect and holy. And 1 John 2:6 tells us that if we claim to live in him, we must walk as Jesus did.

But let’s face it, those are pretty big shoes to fill.

Paul’s advice to the Corinthian Church was to follow his example as he followed the example of Christ (1 Corinthians 11:1). The Gospels are filled with examples of Jesus encountering people. When we know how Jesus lived His life and interacted with others, we can follow His example and live our lives in the same manner.

But there are other Scriptures that point us to how to live like Jesus did. Paul spoke to the believers in Ephesus to be imitators of God and to live a life of love (Ephesians 5:1-2).

To the believers in Philippi, Paul said, “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others. Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 2:3-5 – NIV)

Again, these are big shoes to fill. But Jesus knew that we would need help in reflecting His image in our lives. He didn’t leave us on our own, but gave us a Helper. Take a look at 2 Corinthians 3:18 (NIV) to see how God’s Spirit helps us. “And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his likeness with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.”

Through transformation by the Spirit, we are able to reflect, mirror Jesus’ glory more and more. Transformation. 2 Corinthians 5:17 calls it becoming a “new creation.”

Transformation is a matter of the heart and when our hearts are in line with God’s Word, we reflect or mirror Jesus (Proverbs 27:19).

1 Corinthians 13:12 mentions that we don’t see this mirrored reflection as clearly as we could, but that one day, when we see Jesus face to face, the image will be true perfection.

If you look closely at the image of this butterfly, you’ll see little differences and if you were to look solely at the left side, you would see the flaws. But as a whole, the left side is a good replica of the right side.

It’s the same with our spiritual lives. When we separate ourselves from Jesus, our flaws are evident. When we examine our hearts more closely, we see that we are not following as close to Jesus as we should. It’s only by being close to Jesus that we are viewed to be mirroring Him.

Today, I believe we must look at our lives and ask ourselves how closely we are mirroring Jesus. We must examine our hearts to see if they are in line with Jesus’ teaching. We must determine if we have given ourselves over to transformation.

How’s your reflection?
