College Days

After graduating high school in 1978, I lived on campus of Cincinnati Bible College (now known as Cincinnati Christian University) for three years. I attended one more year at Cincinnati Bible College while living off campus and yet another year at a small Bible college near Buffalo, New York (New York Christian Institute).

During my three years living on campus in Cincinnati, I lived in Alumni Hall for two years and Rine Hall for one. The lower floor of Rine Hall housed the cafeteria when I attended college and for many, this beloved dormitory holds some pretty awesome memories.

I typically woke up at 4 am each morning to do school work and when 6 am rolled around, I would move my studying to the cafeteria. Coffee and coffee cake (the best in all the land) awaited me at that early hour. I was blessed to enjoy this luxury day after day, week after week, for three years!

Rine Hall also housed one of my good friends and together we watched Laura Ingalls fall in love with Almonzo Wilder in the lounge of Rine Hall. Rine Hall was a gathering place for laughter and serious discussions. And during my third year at CBC, I lived in Rine Hall.

You’re probably wondering why I’m so obsessed with Rine Hall today. Well, yesterday, they tore this residence hall down. Today, it no longer exists. It’s gone. The demolition crew began yesterday morning and now, nothing remains of this beloved building.

Oh, there are new, bigger and better buildings to replace Rine Hall on the campus of CBC and new memories are being made each day within the walls of those buildings, but it still makes me a little sad to know that part of my past is gone.

Sometimes we dwell too much upon our past. The regrets. The disappointments. The disillusions. The missed opportunities. But Paul urges us to forget the things that we’ve done wrong or missed and to look forward to what will be. You see, our past holds nothing for us. But in our future, we have hope. We have opportunity. We have promises. So why on earth would we continue to dwell on the past?

Well, I believe the answer is because we just do. Sometimes we can’t help it. We wonder, “What if?” Or “I should have…” Or “What was I thinking?”

My encouragement to you today would be to forget the past and all that accompanies it (sin and its ugliness) and look to the future (redemption and its beauty). Recall Paul’s words with me. “But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 3:13-14 – NIV)

I can’t wait to see what God has in store for me. Can you?

Miles and Miles

I heard a tag line in a car commercial that I thought was thought-provoking. “What good is 27 miles per gallon if the miles aren’t interesting?”

roadI don’t know about you, but I’ve driven some stretches of 27 miles that have not been interesting…some, downright boring!

After my first visit to Colorado some ten years ago, I told my husband that there is no reason to drive east here. If you’re driving east, you can’t see the mountains and that is where the true beauty of Colorado lies.

I guess there are times when we need to be entertained or be visually inspired as we go through this life. But what about the times when we are on a boring stretch? What are we to do then?

I believe as we are on our spiritual journey we encounter the same realities. At times, we are on an interesting stretch of the journey. We may be on a learning streak or attended an uplifting conference.

But then we reach a section of the journey that is a little boring. Those “ho-hum” moments. We feel parched. Dry. Maybe we simply aren’t looking for ways to grow spiritually and the excitement is not visible.

Again, I ask the question. When we are on a boring stretch on this spiritual journey, what are we to do then?

Might I suggest that we make it exciting? Jump into a word study. Or perhaps find a topic you’re interested in and see how often it is mentioned in Scripture. Get into a Bible study with fellow believers.

And then there is the possibility of serving in some capacity. I generally find that offering my talents to others is a great way to bring excitement back into my spiritual life. And, oh the people you will meet along the way!

And of course, spend more time with God in prayer. Make it a conversation with Him. Don’t get bogged down on the words. Give Him your heart. Let God see you as your truest self. You will find that your spiritual journey will come back to life.

I still enjoy going west instead of east in Colorado. But I also know that I can only get home by heading east from just about anywhere I go here. And I also know that I am never under enthused when I see the mountains as I turn and head west. They still take my breath away and I appreciate them so much more.

It’s the same with my spiritual journey. I know that there are times when I’m just not where I should be in my excitement of being in God’s presence, but when I arrive, it is more glorious than I remembered. My breath is taken away and I appreciate that time so much more.

It can be the same for you. Is it time to head home? Why not take the time today to be in God’s presence? Ask Him to join you on your spiritual journey. Ask Him to meet you there. “Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob. He will teach us his ways, so that we may walk in his paths.” (Micah 4:2a – NIV)

And just to make myself clear, He isn’t the One who moved.

“My Life is in Your Hands” – Monday Musical Musings

I fell in love with Kathy Troccoli years ago. The deep, rich tones that flowed from her voice stirred such longing within me. Kathy’s vocal range fell within my own, so naturally, I wanted to sing Kathy’s music.

IMAG1492The only song that ever entered my repertoire however was “My Life is in Your Hands.” To be honest, if I was going to choose one of her songs, this was the one to choose! These lyrics became words I repeated over and over during some of my most difficult moments in life, as well as when things seemed to be going well.

Perhaps you can relate to these lyrics. Maybe today is not going well or you know that difficulty awaits you. If that is the case, share those difficulties with Jesus. Even when we forget Jesus is with us, He is still there and wants to help you through these difficult moments.

Maybe today is a great day for you. Jesus is still with you and He would love for you to chat about what’s right in your life. Let’s not forget to spend time with Jesus when all is well in our lives.

When we surrender our lives to the One who loves us more than life itself, our lives are in good hands.

Take a look at the lyrics of “My Life is in Your Hands” and then click on the link below to listen to Kathy’s beautiful voice as she lifts her heart to God. And then I pray that you too can say, “my life is in your hands, Jesus.”

“My Life is in Your Hands”

Life can be so good
Life can be so hard
Never knowing what each day
Will bring to where You are

Sometimes I forget
And sometimes I can’t see
That whatever comes my way You’ll be with me

My life is in Your hands
My heart is in Your keeping
I’m never without hope
Not when my future is with You

Chorus:

My life is in Your hands
And though I may not see clearly
I will lift my voice and sing
‘Cause Your love does amazing things
Lord, I know, my life is in your hands

Nothing is for sure
Nothing is for keeps
All I know is that your love
Will live eternally

So I will find my way
And I will find my peace
Knowing that you’ll meet my every need

(Chorus)

When I’m at my weakest oh
You carry me
Then I become my strongest Lord
In Your hands

(Chorus)[i]

Reset

I have to reset my password for my work computer today. You know, that pesky reminder pops up and says, “your password will expire in 2 days…you might consider changing it.”

Sometimes my attitude needs to be reset, but I don’t always get a reminder or an ultimatum.

The good news is that my attitude is easily reset when I offer it up to the Holy Spirit and allow Him to do His work in me. If you need an attitude reset, why not do the same? You will be eternally grateful.

Today’s repeat blog post is from my Blogging from A to Z challenge in 2013. Enjoy my musings on blimps!

Blimp – Blogging from A to Z

BlimpBlimps fascinate me. They have for quite some time now. Their quiet approach. Their smooth sail. The fact that they are very large and yet have the ability to float through the air. They are a fun mode of transportation and through the cameras fixed upon them, they bring a bird’s-eye- view to many sporting events.

Years ago while living in a rural area of Ohio, the Goodyear Blimp would sail past our home. We lived near a main north/south interstate and the blimp would use that interstate as a guide. I often heard the blimp overhead and would run outside to glimpse the beautiful vessel. It was always a highlight for me.

Later, while living near Akron, Ohio, the home of one Goodyear Blimp, I created a Vacation Bible School curriculum built around the blimp. I was able to visit the Goodyear facility and tour the museum and gift shop. Those little gifts for the children made a huge impact.

I now live near Denver, Colorado and unfortunately, blimps and high altitude just don’t mix well. So, chances of me ever seeing a blimp here are pretty slim. When I do see a blimp elsewhere, my heart races…a glimpse of my beloved Goodyear Blimp continues to fill my heart with joy.

I could probably go on about the blimp, but that certainly isn’t my goal here. My goal is to show what God has taught me through my love of blimps.

They are Large

The Goodyear Blimps are 192 feet long, 55 feet in diameter and 59.5 feet high, with 202,700 cubic feet of helium and a gross weight of 12,840 pounds.

“Wow” is about all I can say. These blimps are very large. But I serve a God who is much larger than anything man could possibly build. A God who is larger than anything man could possibly imagine. And it is God who deserves my biggest “WOW!”

There’s a little children’s song that speaks to God’s bigness. Take a look at these words and see if you don’t agree.

My God is so big, so strong and so mighty,

there’s nothing my God cannot do.
My God is so big, so strong and so mighty,

there’s nothing my God cannot do.

The mountains are His, the rivers are His,

the stars are His handiwork, too.
My God is so big, so strong and so mighty,

there’s nothing my God cannot do, for you![i]

I believe the last little part of that song is where the lesson is learned. God is big and He can do anything…for me and you. It is His desire to be everything and anything for us. We simply need to acknowledge and accept Him.

They are Quiet

These large vessels are propelled by two engines, small in comparison to the blimp itself. Because of their size, these airships are quiet in comparison to airplanes.

There are times in my life when I need to be quiet and listen for God’s voice and guidance. God knew we would need times of quietness and He gently leads us in this direction in Psalm 46:10 (NIV). “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”

In this fast-paced world, finding a quiet place in our lives may be difficult. But if we heed God’s word and allow His quietness to direct our path, we will find His peace and we will know that He is God.

They are Safe

In over 50 years of using blimps, Goodyear has flown passengers without any serious injuries. Some say it is the safest form of transportation devised.

I find great peace in knowing that within God’s arms I am safe. There are several images of God’s safety in Scripture. In Psalm 3:3 (NIV), King David spoke of God as being his shield. “But you are a shield around me, O Lord; you bestow glory on me and lift up my head.”

In Proverbs 18:10 (NIV), we find refuge in God’s Name. “The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.”

We find that God is the Guardian or Overseer of our souls from 1 Peter 2:25 (NIV). “For you were like sheep going astray, but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.”

And from Isaiah 41:13 (NIV), we can know safety because God upholds us. “For I am the Lord, your God, who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, ‘Do not fear; I will help you.’”

They Take Their Time

The usual cruising speed of the Goodyear Blimp is 35 miles per hour. However, the top speed for the blimp is 53 mph.

Patience is not an easy virtue, but it is one that God speaks to quite often in Scripture. Listen to these words of King David and see if they might be words you need to hear today. “Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him.” (Psalm 37:7a – NIV)

Or maybe Isaiah’s words are what you need today. “Those who wait in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not faint.” (Isaiah 40:31 – NIV)

Then there are the Apostle Paul’s words in this passage. “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” (Galatians 6:9 – NIV)

Perhaps you need all of them! I know I do! I need to slow down in order to hear and see what God is teaching. Maybe you do too.

These are just some of my thoughts on the Goodyear Blimp and what God has taught me along the way. Perhaps you’ve learned something through this piece. I pray that God is teaching you to hear His voice and follow His leading. It’s exactly what He is doing with me.

Grace and peace be yours in abundance,

Donna

Hall of Fame

If you are a baseball lover, you will know that this weekend is a special weekend. Tomorrow, six legends of baseball will be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York. Cooperstown was not far from where I grew up and I recall several visits to this beautiful section of Upstate New York, but the Hall of Fame never captured my attention until I met my husband.

Baseball and BatMy husband’s family can boast two hall-of-famers in their family. There is even a photograph of the original induction ceremony hanging in my home. Today, the Baseball Hall of Fame means more to me because of a personal connection.

As a believer, I am also connected to another hall of fame. The Faithful Hall of Fame as listed in Hebrews 11. This chapter of the Bible shares the stories and mentions a myriad of faithful followers of God from the Old Testament. This list includes the obvious (Noah, Abraham and Moses to name a few), but the author of Hebrews shares some of the faithful believers that we might not be so familiar with.

What about Enoch, Barak or Jephthah? How familiar are you with them? Or the prophets mentioned in Hebrews 11:52? And then there are nameless group who were flogged, chained, imprisoned, stoned, sawed in two, and put to death by the sword. This group is mentioned to have been destitute, persecuted, and mistreated. This group was found worthy to be part of this faithful hall of fame (Hebrews 11:2).

Of course, there should be a “next chapter” to this Faithful Hall of Fame list. The Apostles most certainly would be part of the faithful group. As well as people like Mary Magdalene, Aquila and Priscilla, Apollos, Timothy, Silas, John the Baptizer and so many more that could be mentioned.

There are also the nameless faithful of the New Testament. The tenth leper who returned to thank Jesus. The woman with a blood disorder who knew just touching the hem of Jesus’ garment would heal her. The Ethiopian Philip encountered. The Philippian jailer. The man of Macedonia in Paul’s vision. And I know there are countless more.

There are two key verses in Hebrews 11. Verse one tells us what faith is. “Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.” (Hebrews 11:1 – NIV)

Hebrews 11:6 (NIV) tells us why faith is so important. “And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and he rewards those who earnestly seek him.”

What beautiful benefits we receive when our faith is placed in God. Hope. Assurance. Rewards. Personal relationship. Future. Purpose. Confidence. All because we’ve chosen to be faithful to the God of the past, present and future.

This connection that I have to the Baseball Hall of Fame is pretty cool. But the connection I have to the Faithful Hall of Fame is even better. We’ve read the same Author’s work (the Bible), we have grown in our personal relationship with the same God, and our faith in God has brought rich rewards. How blessed I am to be part of this hall of fame.

Grace and peace be yours in abundance,

Donna
