“Hallelujah (Your Love Makes Me Sing)” – Musical Musings in March

Did you remember singing this song as a child?

“Hallelu, hallelu, hallelu, hallelujah! Praise Ye, the Lord!”

If you ever went to Sunday School, youth camp or vacation Bible school, I suspect you have. And if you remember with me, the goal was to see who could sing it the loudest. The boys or the girls. Or the right side or the left side. I guess there was just something about screaming these words at the top of our lungs that seemed worshipful. What do you think?

If those singing (or shouting) this song truly knew the meaning of these words, as well as understood praise and worship, then I suspect this song was worshipful.

However, I pray that our time of worship has evolved as we’ve grown older. Not necessarily dampened or stifled, but as we’ve grown in our relationship with Jesus, I pray that we have taken our worship to the next level (or the 50th level).

Today when we sing “Hallelujah,” do you know what it means? The songwriters of that little ditty knew that hallelujah and praise the Lord are equivalent. So when you see “Hallelujah!” in Scripture, you’re really reading “Praise the Lord!”

Psalm 111 begins with these very words. “Praise the Lord.” (Psalm 111:1 – NIV) As do Psalm 103, 104, 106, 112, 113, 117, 134, 135, 146, 147, 148, 149 and 150. They all begin with “Praise the Lord.”

So what does that tell you? For me, it shows me how I am to worship. I am to begin worship with praise. Sometimes it can be big and loud, while other times it can be soft and gentle.

Today’s song I want to share with you is a song that helps us to remember why and how we should praise God. Let’s not let today get away from us without spending time in praise to our God and Father. “Praise ye, the Lord!”

“Hallelujah (Your Love Makes Me Sing)”[i]

Your love is amazing
Steady and unchanging
Your love is a mountain
Firm beneath my feet

Your love is a mystery
How You gently lift me
When I am surrounded
Your love carries me

Your love is surprising
I can feel it rising
All the joy that’s growing
Deep inside of me
And every time I see you
All your goodness shines through
And I can feel this God song rising up in me

Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah
Your love makes me sing
Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah
Your love makes me sing

Your love is surprising
I can feel it rising
All the joy that’s growing
Deep inside of me
And every time I see you
All your goodness shines through
And I can feel this God song rising up in me

“Jesus is Coming Again” – Musical Musings in March

What a promise! Jesus is coming again!

cool-sheet-music-background-pq3wplni1 Thessalonians 4:16 (NIV) reminds us that “the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first.”

Are you listening for that trumpet call? Are your ears aching to hear the loud command? Oh what a day that will be!

Today I want to share a traditional, older hymn, but the arrangement I found is exhilarating! I pray that you will be moved by the lyrics and music of this song. I pray that your spirit is stirred with the excitement that today could be the day. Because I’m very certain that Jesus is coming again!

“Jesus is Coming Again”[i]

Marvelous message we bring,
Glorious carol we sing,
Wonderful word of the King,
Jesus is coming again!

Chorus:
Coming again, Coming again,
May be morning, may be noon,
May be evening and may be soon!
Coming again, Coming again;
O what a wonderful day it will be –
Jesus is coming again!

Forest and flower exclaim,
Mountain and meadow the same,
All earth and heaven proclaim,
Jesus is coming again!

(Chorus)

Standing before Him at last,
Trial and trouble all past,
Crowns at His feet we will cast,
Jesus is coming again!

(Chorus)

“Jesus Paid it All (O Praise the One)” – Musical Musings in March

Isn’t it exciting when you hear a tune from your past? I’ll hear a song from my childhood or teen years and I’m transported back to that time. I remember people, events, places and memories that revolve around certain songs.

IMAG1492I specifically remember going to my very first dance. I was young…in 6th grade. Now I had danced in our living room with some of my best friends, but never in public. So I was a little nervous. But as soon as young Michael Jackson started singing “Rockin’ Robin,” I was ready to start dancing! Okay, I think I just dated myself. To this day, I can see myself in that gym when I hear this song.

Music does that. We associate periods of our life with specific music. We associate people with music. We find comfort, strength and renewal through music. How blessed we are that God placed music in our hearts.

I’m sure each of us can recall church songs as well. Hymns, spiritual songs, camp songs. These too take us to a different time and place.

There has been a resurgence of older hymns in our churches today. Artists have been able to take these beautiful pieces of music and embellish them to offer a modern version. Many have gone on to become classics that will stand the test of time.

I’ve chosen such a song today. “Jesus Paid it All” was written in 1865, but the message is as old as the mid 50’s AD when Paul penned these words. “Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body.” (1 Corinthians 6:19-20 – NIV)

The price has been paid. We have been ransomed. So what are we going to do with this freedom in Christ? Honor God. Yes, we need to honor God with our bodies, but also with our minds and our strength and our hearts and our souls. That includes our thoughts, our language and our actions. With everything in us, we are to honor God, because Jesus paid the price. He paid it once and for all.

So today, here’s the song “Jesus Paid it All” for you to read through and listen to. Once you have this song in your heart, let’s praise the One who paid the debt. Praise the One who paid your debt.

“Jesus Paid it All (O Praise the One)[i]

I hear the Savior say,
Thy strength indeed is small;
Child of weakness, watch and pray,
Find in Me thine all in all.

Chorus:

Jesus paid it all,
All to Him I owe;
Sin had left a crimson stain,
He washed it white as snow.

Lord, now indeed I find
Thy power and Thine alone,
Can change the leper’s spots
and melt the heart of stone.
(Chorus)

And when before the throne
I stand in Him complete,
Jesus died my soul to save,
my lips shall still repeat

(Chorus)

Bridge:
O Praise the one who paid my debt
And raised this life up from the dead
O Praise the one who paid my debt
And raised this life up from the dead

(Chorus)

“God Almighty” – Musical Musings in March

Well, we’ve come to one of my favorite months of the year. March! I get to talk about music all month long and that makes me happy.

???????????????????????????????As an added twist this year, I’m also going to incorporate the fact that March is Bible Appreciation Month! So my plan is to add Scripture to go along with each song.

I’ve chosen “God Almighty” to begin the month because it is only by and through Him that I am able to do all that I do. Acts 17:28 (NIV) reminds us that “in Him we live and move and have our being.” He is our mighty Creator as well as our loving Father.

As you go about your day, remember all that God has done for you. Recall the precious love notes He’s given. Tap into His perfect peace and power. Thrive on the promises you know He will keep. Praise Him for the mighty works of His hands. And at the end of the day, know that He is God Almighty.

The lyrics to this song are below, as well as a link for your listening pleasure. Have a blessed day and a happy March 1st!

“God Almighty”[i]

Like the waters roar
Is Your voice, oh Lord
There is none before
And none beside

You are set apart
You alone are God
Your glory reaches far
From sky to sky

Chorus:

Holy, Holy, Lord, God Almighty
Early in the morning we will sing
Holy, Holy, we bow down before Thee
All Your children love to sing Your name
God Almighty

You’re the breath of life
You’re the God on high
Your song shall rise
And never pass away

Oh, Your Majesty
Evermore shall be
The earth, the skies, the sea
Shall bring You praise

(Chorus)

And I hide my eyes
With my face to the ground
In the presence of Your Majesty
And I clap my hands, and I lay my crowns
In the presence of Your Majesty

(Chorus)

“Better is One Day” – Monday Musical Musings

If you haven’t figured it out, it’s February 29th! That means you have an extra day this year to do something spectacular with.

???????????????????????????????February 29 has always been special for my family. My grandfather was born on this day in the late 1800’s. And as if that weren’t special enough, he was a twin. What wonderful celebrations we had for Grandpa and Uncle Bill.

I’m sure for my future daughter-in-law, this extra day is delightful. One day more to plan, prepare and anticipate the day she comes along side my son as his bride.

For others, this day may be an ordinary day. No real special meaning to this day. It’s just another day in a life.

While we may or may not look upon this day as an extra special day, the psalmist knew how wonderful one day could be. See if you might agree.

“How lovely is your dwelling place, O Lord Almighty! My soul yearns, even faints, for the courts of the Lord; my heart and my flesh cry out for the living God…Better is one day in your courts than a thousand elsewhere.” (Psalm 84:1; 2; 10a – NIV)

If we look upon today from the psalmist’s point of view, today will be extra special as we meet God! And the good news is, that we can meet up with God again tomorrow and the next day and the next. These special days can be on-going and forever.

As a reminder that this is the place where our hearts and flesh desire to be, I have a song for you to sing all day long. Matt Redman’s, “Better is One Day.” I pray that you will find that being in love with God is far better than anything else. I pray that this extra day will give you the opportunity to draw closer to God. I pray that your greatest desire today will be to meet God in His dwelling place.

“Better is One Day”[i]

How lovely is Your dwelling place

Oh Lord Almighty,

My soul doth long and even faints for You

For here my heart is satisfied

Within Your presence

I see beneath the shadow of Your wings

Chorus:

Better is one day in Your courts

Better is one day in Your house

Better is one day in Your courts

Than thousands elsewhere

Better is one day in Your courts

Better is one day in Your house

Better is one day in Your courts

Than thousands elsewhere

How lovely is Your dwelling place

Oh Lord Almighty,

My soul doth long and even faints for You

For here my heart is satisfied

Within Your presence

I see beneath the shadow of Your wings

(Chorus)

Bridge:

My heart and flesh cry out

For You, the Living God

Your Spirit’s water to my soul

I’ve tasted, and I’ve seen

Come once again to me

I will draw near to You

I will draw near to You

(Chorus)
