In an Instant

Folks, I’m reminded again this morning that life is very short. I am reminded that we cannot take one moment for granted. I am reminded that we must not waste any time on the things are unimportant. I am reminded that saying “I love you” to those who mean the most to me must flow freely from my heart. I am reminded that my life must reflect Jesus in every circumstance.

July 12 2004 004For in an instant, everything could change.

I, along with many of my friends, are mourning the loss of a lovely prayer warrior this morning. She is with Jesus, but how we will miss her.

I learned much in the short time I knew this lovely lady and her smile, her laughter, her wisdom, her prayer life, her love for Jesus will remain with me for many years to come.

Today as we consider our relationship with Jesus, I pray that each of us comes to the understanding that we need Jesus more than anything in this world. And once we know it in our heart, that we will share the love of Jesus with those we know and meet. My dear friend was a great example of this.

“People Need the Lord” – Monday Musical Musings

“People Need the Lord” is a song made popular by Steve Green in the early 90’s. This melody stirs up memories and emotions within me each time I hear it. Yes, it takes me back to those moments in time when I first heard this tune, but it also is a reminder that every person on this planet needs God more than anything else this world has to offer…and how I miss opportunities to share His love with them.

I’ve been touched by God’s Spirit to share His message with others through the years. Whether it was in my college dorm room or hearing the presentation of a service trip opportunity to SE Asia, God has shown me what to do. To share with others what meaning God can bring to their lives.

In my heart I knew and know that only the Lord can fill the void in our lives. God created us to desire Him and Him alone. King David knew this as well. Take a look at his words. “O God, you are my God, earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you, my body longs for you, in a dry and weary land where there is no water.” (Psalm 63:1 – NIV)

When we are in a dry and weary land, God invites us to come to the water. “Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters, and you who have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost. Why spend money on what is not bread, and your labor on what does not satisfy? Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good, and your soul will delight in the richest of fare. Give ear and come to me; hear me, that your soul may life. I will make an everlasting covenant with you, my faithful love promised to David.” (Isaiah 55:1-3 – NIV)

Jesus spoke to this in John 6 when He declared “I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty.” (John 6:35 – NIV)

Regardless of what we are going through, we need the Lord. Every person we pass by today needs the Lord. It’s up to you and me to share this message with them. Only the Lord can satisfy all that they long for. Are you willing to share what you know to be true?

The lyrics to “People Need the Lord” are below. I pray that you will be touched and that you will realize that every person, everywhere needs the Lord.

“People Need the Lord”

Everyday they pass me by,
I can see it in their eyes.
Empty people filled with care,
Headed who knows where?

On they go through private pain,
Living fear to fear.
Laughter hides their silent cries,
Only Jesus hears.

People need the Lord, people need the Lord.
At the end of broken dreams, He’s the open door.
People need the Lord, people need the Lord.
When will we realize, people need the Lord?

We are called to take His light
To a world where wrong seems right.
What could be too great a cost
For sharing Life with one who’s lost?

Through His love our hearts can feel
All the grief they bear.
They must hear the Words of Life
Only we can share.

People need the Lord, people need the Lord
At the end of broken dreams, He’s the open door.
People need the Lord, people need the Lord.
When will we realize that we must give our lives,
For people need the Lord.[i]

I love this version of this song. Steve Green and Song Jung Mi sing a duet. It doesn’t matter what the language; the message is still the same. People need the Lord! Click here to listen to this beautiful tune.

Psalm 42:8

I’ve been trying my hand at digital journaling and know that I’m going to like it. I suspect I’ve been digital journaling for a while now, just didn’t have a name to put to it.

I love creating in Publisher or Photoshop or InDesign, so I have all the tools that I need to continue on this journey. When I combine my love for Scripture with my love for creation, it’s a win-win situation.

I ran across this verse of Scripture and loved the concept it provided. And then as I was wandering up and down a stream yesterday with some of Bible study ladies, I snapped the picture. Combined, I find a beautiful picture of God directing my path and life. I pray that you will enjoy it as much as I did.

Creative Bible Journaling and Trust

Yesterday was our first class on Bible study journaling at Rocky. What a blessing to have nine ladies interested in this new way of looking at God’s Word. I pray that they will be as blessed through this process as I have been.

I want to share my devotion from yesterday on trust. Enjoy!

Daytona Beach 014mTrust

Trust. What is it? Over the next seven weeks, we are going to explore what this word means and how it shows up in our lives. We are going to dig deep to see if there is anything within us that we’ve chosen to hold tightly to instead of trusting God with that thing.

My prayer is, and has been, that by the time we reach July 21, you will be able to use creative Bible journaling to lead you through the process of trusting God a little more each day—with the big things and the little things.

Throughout this study, we’re going to be looking at verses of Scripture that deal specifically with trust in God. Through creative journaling, you’ll begin to see what God is asking you to do in each of these areas of your life.

Trust is the “firm belief in the reliability, truth, ability or strength of someone or something.” Now I’m sure that each of us can think of a time when our trust was misplaced in a person or thing. Your car wouldn’t start when you trusted that it was in good working condition. You trusted in the financial world to keep your investments healthy. You trusted that your body would not break down over the years. Or perhaps you’ve trusted friend who let you down in some way. These are all areas where we have found our trust trounced upon.

But if we really look at the word trust and its meaning, the only reliable, truthful, able or mighty One we can place our entire trust in, is God. He is the One who will never let us down. He is the One who will lead and guide you into truth and truth alone. He is the One who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine. He is the One who will breathe strength into you when you are unable to stand on your own.

Over these next few weeks, we are going to see how we can place our trust in God in seven areas. Today we are going to see how we can trust in the name of the Lord.

In biblical times, a name represented the person and their characteristics. Recall the names of these biblical friends and the meaning of their names.

Abraham – In Genesis 17:5, Abram was changed to Abraham because God had made him a father of many nations.

Israel – In Genesis 32:28, God changed Jacob’s name to Israel because of the struggles Jacob had with God and humans and had overcome.

Simon – Jesus changed Simon’s name to Peter because on this rock Jesus would build His church (Matthew 16:16)

Jesus – His name wasn’t changed, but we know He was given this name because He will save His people from their sins (Matthew 1:21).

In the same way, God’s name is a symbol of His nature, character and person. The name of the Lord is the manifestation of His character. It is synonymous with the Lord Himself.

So why can we trust in this Name above all others and everything else?

Because God is:

Faithful and True – Revelation 19:11 reminds us that He is called Faithful and True. This means we can trust that He will do what He said He would and that He will keep His promises. All of them. This means that we can believe every word He has spoken, because His name provides truth for each of us.

The One Who Upholds – Isaiah 41:13 tells us that when we are unable to stand on our own, the name of the One Who Upholds will take hold of our right hand and we are assured that we don’t need to fear because He will help us. And in Isaiah 41:10, God reminds us that He is strengthening and helping us with His righteous right hand. What a beautiful picture that we can trust.

The God of New Life – When our past or desires of this world creep in, we can trust that the God of new life is providing what we need to live abundantly. Jesus spoke these words in John 14:6 (NIV). “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” Jesus is the Life Giver and we can trust that this new life is available to you and me. Not only do we have new life through Jesus Christ (see 2 Corinthians 5:17 for even more assurance), but we also have abundant life. John 10:10 assures us that Jesus came so that we might have life, and to have it to the full. Trust this truth.

The Guardian/Overseer of Our Souls – Now if you’re like me, you strayed. Wandered off from the path that God has laid before me. We see from 1 Peter 2:25 that we can trust God to draw us to Him and when we return to Him, He will shepherd and guard us. This is a precious truth that you and I can put all of our trust in. God wants to care for us and that is why the name Guardian or Overseer of our souls is so trustworthy.

The Comforter – And finally, when we don’t know where to turn for comfort, we can trust that the God of all comfort will provide compassion for each of us. Listen to these words from 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 (NIV). “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.” As we trust God with our pain and sorrow, we receive His compassion and comfort and then in turn, we are able to trust that He will lead and guide us when we encounter others who need compassion and comfort.

This may seem overwhelming to you today, but as you begin to see that God’s name (in many forms) is the name that you can place all of your trust in because God is reliable, truthful, able and mighty.

The verses that are on your handout for today remind us of this powerful name. Let’s read them together.

“Those who know your name will trust in you, for you, Lord, have never forsaken those who seek you.” (Psalm 9:10 – NIV)

“Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.” (Psalm 20:7 – NIV)

Remember, we can trust God’s name because we know Him. Now let’s see what He has to say to you.

Grace and peace be yours in abundance,

“More Than a Dead Letter” – Today’s Touch

Just a reminder that I’ve added a touch of poetry to my world. Not my poetry (but I would never rule out the possibility of sharing a poem I write…if I ever decide to write a poem), but others who are much more skilled at this form of writing.

Today’s piece of poetry is from Philips Brooks. Take a look at his words and I’ll meet you on the other side.

“More Than a Dead Letter”
By Phillips Brooks

The Bible is like a telescope.
If a man looks through his telescope,
Then he sees the worlds beyond;
But if he looks at his telescope,
Then he does not see anything but that.
The Bible is a thing to be looked through,
To see that which is beyond;
But most people only look at it;
And so they see only the dead letter.

DSC04480The Bible contains words that are to enhance our lives. We find encouragement, guidelines, conviction, love, grace and redemption to name a few. We find God’s character within the pages of this holy book. There are records of miracles and wondrous signs. We read of births and deaths. There are examples for us to follow. There are warnings against the evil in this world.

But if we never look deeply into the pages of God’s Word, we will have missed the best piece of literature known to mankind.

Today I would like to challenge you to read at least one chapter in the Bible today. However, I will choose the chapter. Colossians 3. That’s what I want you to read today. Then once you’ve read it, think about what you’ve read. What does it mean to live a holy life? This chapter provides a good start.

And then, determine to live this way today. Change your thought process. Control your desire to live the way the world lives. Show compassion to those around you. Allow God’s peace to dwell in your heart. Take it with you as you head to work or into the world and hold tightly to these ideas within your home.

Now, do you have a better understanding of how God’s Word can enhance your life? And all because you chose to dig a little deeper within the pages of Scripture.

I will be praying for you today!

Oh, and if you are a poet and would like to share your work with me, I’d love to use the work of someone I know! Have a blessed day!

Grace and peace be yours in abundance,

What Are Your Plans?

I have made some grand plans for the summer. I have two new Bible studies planned. One actually starts tomorrow, so local friends, if you want to get in on this fun, new way of exploring God’s Word called journaling, let me know and I can get the details to you.

DSC02411mI also will lead a study on Thursday’s during the month of July that will help us understand four women of the Bible. I’m excited about that study.

So I’ve made all these plans, but here’s the problem. I didn’t think about how these studies affect the things I’ve already got going in my life. I set up the journaling class to meet at a time when I should be in a staff meeting. Honest. I completely forgot about it.

And I already had a couple of trips to Ohio planned, but I didn’t consider these trips either…I don’t think that I use my planner or my calendar very well. LOL! I think I need some help! An assistant for the assistant!

And just when I thought I had my plans all set and ready to go, some personal things dropped in as if to say, “Hey! Do you really think you’re in control?”

All of this to say, plans change.

Yes, in life, sometimes plans change. Sometimes lives change. It was no different for the people who Jesus encountered. Think of the people whose plans changed because they met Jesus. Nicodemus. Zacchaeus. Mary Magdalene. The woman at the well. Peter, Andrew, James and John.

Perhaps the greatest plan-changed encounter was Jesus with Saul. I just finished writing Acts 9 (very powerful) and this chapter tells of a plan-changing moment. Saul heard a voice and saw a blinding light. Jesus spoke to Saul and from that moment on, all of Saul’s plans changed.

From the moment Jesus grasped hold of Saul’s heart, his plans, his life, his message changed, and even his name changed! He became totally sold into Jesus’ plan. Acts 9:22 (NIV) tells of this miraculous change in Saul’s plans. Take a look at what was said about Saul. “Yet Saul grew more and more powerful and baffled the Jews living in Damascus by proving that Jesus is the Christ.”

You see, Saul had been sent to Damascus to squash this new sect of believers, but before he even arrived, Saul’s plans changed. Enraged, the Jewish leaders conspired to kill Saul. But another change in plans helped Saul escape (Acts 9:25).

Encountering Jesus is a plan changer. When we allow Jesus to do His work in our lives, things change. We change. Life changes.

There’s a song from the musical “The Witness” that I just love. It is a song about Peter’s encounter with Jesus and how he received life through Jesus. Click here to listen to the message.

This is my invitation to you today. Come to the Life Giver. Allow Jesus to make this change in your life and your plans. Then, you too can join the list mentioned above. Are you ready for a change?

Grace and peace be yours in abundance,

Donna
