Smile and Share

There was a great fireworks display this past weekend behind our home. These are my favorite fireworks because I don’t have to go anywhere. I don’t have to fight traffic. I can even watch them in my pajamas if I chose. They are right in my backyard and they are really good.

SmileThis year I was surprised by one in particular. It was a smile face. I captured it with my camera phone (mainly because I was snapping shots continuously) but was pretty impressed by the design of this particular firework.

Years ago, I was working on a production for church and needed a flash pot. It’s a prop that contains a small amount of flash powder and when ignited by a squib, produces a little burst of smoke and boom. The only place to get squibs was at a fireworks manufacturer. So I headed that direction. I drove and drove, miles and miles away from civilization until I came to the complex.

The buildings were pretty separate from one another, just in case of an explosion. I was greeted by a man with a few fingers missing, but who smiled from ear to ear. He loved his work. It was his passion. And he had given all he could for the success of this business.

I often wonder if I’m giving enough for God’s Kingdom. Sure I volunteer, I teach, I lead, I write, I do a lot for the kingdom and my local church. But is it enough?

According to a LifeWay survey, 80% of people sitting in a pew on Sunday morning believe it’s their responsibility to share the Gospel with another person. But 61% have not done so in the past six months. I’ve also heard that there are a lot of Christians who never lead another person to Christ in their lifetime. These, my friends, are disturbing statistics.

Sharing God’s message isn’t just a suggestion, but it’s a command from Jesus Himself. Jesus’ final instruction to His disciples (and to us) was to make disciples (Matthew 28:19-20). The only way we can accomplish this is to share the Gospel with others.

I recently watched We Bought a Zoo again. The dad in the story mentioned to his son that remarkable things could happen if he were courageous for just 20 seconds.

We all understand this concept. It’s the initial conversation or the extra step that it takes to speak or to ask. But just think of the amazing things God would do if we, as His Kingdom citizens, were courageous for just 20 seconds and invited someone to hear the Good News. What if everyone told one? The results would be greater than we could imagine.

Oh, and don’t forget, Jesus also said He would always be with us. His Spirit would always be with us. So there really is no reason to be fearful. The Holy Spirit will provide the words and the courage to open up and tel others about Jesus.

Are you doing enough? When’s the last time you shared God’s message with another? Are you willing to be courageous for 20 seconds?

I can’t wait to see what God has in store!

Uh-Oh

I woke up this morning and had my quiet time and read through some devotional material. I then sat down to my computer to begin writing.

???????????????????????????????????????Lately my Lenovo has been shooting a “fan failure” error across the screen, so Mason has ordered the parts to replace the fans. Each day I’ve been turning off my computer for this reason. When it powers up, the option of pressing F1 or F2 appears.

As usual, I hit the F2 key. Nothing. I hit it again. Again nothing. I changed the batteries in my wireless keyboard. Twice. Nothing. I pulled out an older keyboard with wires. Nope. My computer just wouldn’t move forward.

I had no other choice but to call upon Mason. After 10 minutes of attempting the easy stuff and another 20 minutes searching the internet, Mason announced that he would wait until the fans arrived and see if that would fix the problem.

Looks like my trusty Toshiba laptop will be my workmate until the fans arrive later this week.

There are a few uh-oh moments that I recall in Scripture.

What about the feeding of the 5,000? No one had thought to bring food (except one young lad), but Jesus was able to create a feast out of his five loaves and two fish.

Then there was the time Jesus and His disciples sailed across the Sea of Galilee. It was calm when they left, but things turned horribly wrong. The storm was so overpowering, that the disciples were afraid they would die. Again, Jesus rescued them with the words, “Peace. Be still.”

Perhaps the biggest uh-oh moment may have been Peter’s denial of Jesus. Jesus predicted it and Peter truly believed he would never do such a thing. But then, hours later, Peter could be found weeping bitterly for his denial. But yet again, Jesus restored Peter. Peter’s life was changed forever.

The lessons we learn in uh-oh moments are priceless…especially when they are spiritual lessons learned.

Perhaps you’ve made your fair share of blunders. The good news I have to share with you today is that Jesus can take those uh-oh moments and use them for His Kingdom. Jesus is the Master of restoration, rescue and refueling. Don’t let another uh-oh moment go by without asking Jesus to come to your rescue.

Time will tell if my computer will be restored. But until then, I know that I have a dependable laptop to fill all of my needs. Just like Jesus does with my life.

“No Other Name But Jesus” – Monday Musical Musings

There are a few pieces of music in this world that brings everyone to their feet. The National Anthem. The Hallelujah Chorus. Hail to the Chief. I believe the song I share today is one that should be added to this list.

IMAG1492Not because of the melody and harmonies (although it is a stunning piece). Not because of who is singing this song (even though there have been some pretty spectacular performances of this song). But because of whom this song brings people to know. Jesus. The message of this song tells us that Jesus is the only Name we need to know. It’s the only Name we need to speak. It is the only Name.

Acts 4:12 (NIV) tells us why the Name of Jesus is the only Name. “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved.” Jesus. His is the Name by which we are saved.

Today I share this beautiful piece that leads me to worship each time I hear it. I’m sure you will agree, there is no other Name. Let’s magnify and praise His Name.

“No Other Name But Jesus”

Above His name there is no other name

The one who is eternally the same

There is no other name

The first and last, beginning and the end

He was the King who made the common man His friend

There is no other name, let every tongue proclaim

And sing the name of Jesus

Magnify and praise the name of Jesus

No other name but Jesus

There is power in the precious name of Jesus, Jesus

Messiah, King of Kings and Lord of Lords, Jesus

He created all there is with his own hands

And yet the smallest need He understands

There is no other name

The one who said, “I am the great I am”

And then He gave Himself, a sacrifice for man

There is no other name, let every tongue proclaim

And sing the name of Jesus

Magnify and praise the name of Jesus

No other name but Jesus

There is power in the precious name of Jesus, Jesus

Forever He shall reign as King of Kings, Lord of all and every living thing

From now on we’ll worship Him and praise the name of Jesus

Magnify and praise the name of Jesus

No other name but Jesus

There is power in the precious name of Jesus, Jesus

Forever He shall reign as King of Kings, Lord of all and every living thing

From now on we’ll worship Him and praise the name of Jesus, Jesus, Jesus[i]

Now, are you ready to stand and magnify the Name of Jesus with this precious group (Steve Green, John Mohr, Gary McSpadden and Bill Gaither)? If so, click here.

Grace and peace be yours in abundance,

First Sunday in August

It’s a beautiful Sunday morning here in Colorado! The mountains are visible from my office. The sunrise was spectacular. And Elvis just finished singing “How Great Thou Art.” Life doesn’t get much better than this.

???????????????????????????????Of course it could be better. My family could be gathered round me or I could be worshiping with my church family (which I get to do in a matter of hours). But all-in-all it’s already a great morning!

Today I am re-posting the next letter of the alphabet from my A to Z challenge in 2013. It’s a song posting, but I’m sure you’ll be okay with music two days in a row! I am. So enjoy this older post and have a wonderfully blessed day basking in God’s love!

“Crown Him (Majesty)” – Blogging from A to Z

This past Sunday was Easter or Resurrection Sunday. During our contemporary worship service, we sang several hymns that were uplifting and also caused more emotion than usual for me. One of the hymns we sang was “Crown Him with Many Crowns,” with Chris Tomlin’s addition to the message of this hymn.

How blessed to be able to sing praise to my God and King for His precious gift of salvation that I have received through His Son, Jesus Christ! And an even greater blessing is that I can sing His praise any time I wish. Not just on Sunday morning.

I must tell you that I just took a break to listen to this song and praise God right here at my desk in my office. Oh how glorious!

I might encourage you to do the same. Click on this link to listen to this worship song and sing praise to God in the moment.

Crown Him with many crowns
The Lamb upon His throne
Hark! How the heavenly anthem drowns
All music but its own;
Awake my soul and sing
Of Him who died for me
And hail Him as thy matchless King
Through all eternity.

Chorus:
Majesty, Lord of all
Let every throne before Him fall
The King of kings, O come adore
Our God who reigns forevermore.

Crown Him Lord of life
Who triumphed o’er the grave
And rose victorious in the strife
For those He came to save;
His glories now we sing
Who died and rose on high
Who died eternal life to bring
And lives that death may die.

Bridge:
All hail, Redeemer, hail
For He has died for me
His praise and glory shall not fail
Throughout eternity.[i]

As I was researching this song for this piece, I found that the Scriptural reference for this hymn is from Revelation 19:12 (NIV). “His eyes are like blazing fire, and on his head are many crowns. He has a name written on him that no one knows but he himself.”

This verse is from the section describing Christ returning as Warrior-Messiah King. Only our Warrior-Messiah King is able to wear these crowns for He is the King of kings and the Lord of lords.

What an image! Years ago an artist painted images of the Book of Revelation and set it to Scripture and music. I had the privilege of seeing this presentation at a national Christian convention. Those images have stayed in my mind and heart through these years.

Her image of Jesus in this form was most breath-taking. Wouldn’t you agree? For more of her (Pat Marvenko Smith, Revelation Illustrated, 1992) images, please visit her website by clicking here.

So today, let’s praise the Warrior-Messiah King as we crown Him with many crowns. For it is only through Him that we have redemption and everlasting life. It is only through Him that we have true freedom.

If you do not know Jesus as your personal Savior, please don’t hesitate to contact me. I would love to share God’s message of grace with you.

Thank you for stopping by for my third day of the A to Z challenge through April. And as always, I’d love to hear from you!

Grace and peace be yours in abundance,

Donna

I Think it’s a Rock

My daughter Candace is a rock collector. She’s been picking up and pocketing rocks since she was 3 years old. I can’t even begin to tell you how many times her rock collection has been moved, but it’s been plenty. I must admit though, she has a pretty cool assortment.

When we built our home nine years ago, I didn’t have grandchildren, but I knew that I wanted pretty rocks about so that they could enjoy them as much as their Aunt Candy. There are little pockets about our home where rocks abound.

Petrified Wood 2These areas bring great delight to my grandson, Percy. Upon their arrival to our house, he immediately goes to a rock bed and picks up a treasure. He brings it into the house and we talk about it a little. It then is placed in a little bowl that has become his “collection.” (this is exactly what Candace did.)

Last weekend, Candace and Percy were looking at his rocks when Candace noticed a unique stone. It didn’t look like a typical rock from our rock beds, but like something of real value. This was their conversation.

Candace: “I think this is petrified wood!”

Percy: “I think it’s a rock.”

Petrified WoodNow, while I don’t believe Candace was trying to lead Percy astray, I think we can find some spiritual application in this conversation.

I have said it before and I will say it again. Study the Bible. Know what God’s Word says. Discern for yourself what Scripture is saying. There may, no, there will come a time when you need to know the Bible. Here’s why.

False teachers will show up. The Bible is filled with warnings about such teachers. This is a short list of these warnings. Romans 16:17; 2 Peter 2:1-3; 1 John 4:1-3; Matthew 7:15-20; 1 Timothy 4:1-5; and 1 Timothy 6:20-21. Unless you know Scripture, you won’t be able to recognize false teaching.

Colossians 2:8 warns that we are not to be taken “captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy.” And Paul urges us to “Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.” (2 Timothy 2:15 – NIV) The only way to do either of these is to know God’s Word.

In a world of electronics, a physical Bible may not be needed. But I would also urge you to grab a Bible and know it. Know where specific books can be found. Memorize their order. That is part of “presenting ourselves” to God and to others. I would also encourage you to carry your Bible to church. Yes, the Scripture is probably going to be on the screen, but knowing that I’ve read it for myself in my own Bible makes a difference to me. It helps me to know that what is being taught in the message falls in line with God’s Word.

Let’s prepare ourselves now for those false teachers who show up and try to pull us away from God’s truth. Know God’s Word. Live God’s Word. Use God’s Word correctly.

I also think there is another way to look at this conversation between Candace and Percy. Candace knows rocks. She has looked at and studied rocks for years. Percy on the other hand has just begun his journey with geology. In this particular situation, I would call Candace a well-studied student and is able to speak into what this rock is. Percy? Well he’s just beginning and to him, it’s a rock, when in reality, there is something deeper to consider.

When you find a biblical scholar that you can trust and believe, believe it. After discernment, you will find those who know what God’s Word really says and you’ll be able to learn much from them. I have had so many of these scholars in my life and they have been my mentors. I pray that you are able to find a few of them on your spiritual journey.

I don’t know if this rock is petrified wood or not. To me, I think it’s a rock. But what I do know is that God’s Word holds life for me and each day I present myself to God as one prepared to handle God’s Word correctly. Would you care to join me?

Grace and peace be yours in abundance,

Donna
