Work to be Done

I don’t usually share an older blog post during the week, but I feel the need to bring attention to Colorado and flood victims who are still struggling. There are still homes destroyed. There are still people displaced. There is still so much to do.

Flood 2To make matters worse, the snow in our mountains is beginning to melt. Run off could bring more flooding which causes anxiety for those who have been able to return to their homes.

Please continue to pray for our Colorado folks who were affected by the flood and pray that they will know the full extent of Jesus’ love.

Full Extent of His Love

Take a look at this verse of Scripture. “It was just before the Passover Feast. Jesus knew that the time had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he now showed them the full extent of his love.” (John 13:1 – NIV)

In the past I have related this verse to Jesus’ sacrifice. That certainly would show us the full extent of His love. But what I’ve never connected to this verse is that it was written just before Jesus washed the disciple’s feet.

Perhaps service toward our fellow man is showing the full extent of Jesus’ love to them.

I spoke with a woman yesterday whose home had not been filled with mud through the recent flood, but water had poured into her home and has damaged all of the electrical wiring in the house. They are unable to get assistance from FEMA or their homeowners insurance. They’ve been told their home is unsafe, the smoke detectors have been removed due to malfunction, and there is no fire service to their town. They have no money to stay elsewhere, so they have no choice to live in this home and pray for God’s safety and peace.

The only thing I could do in this situation was listen to this beautiful woman’s story, hold her hand, pray for her, and turn in her flood relief assistance form to our accounting department. I felt as if I hadn’t done anything.

I continued to listen to her story. A home destroyed in Hurricane Sandy. A disabled husband who has been diagnosed with PTSD. Hours of waiting for contractors to supply work quotes (and then contractors not showing up). Days and weeks without water or electric. Giving up one vehicle because they can’t afford the payments. And this list could go on.

But through all our conversation, this sweet woman smiled through it all. I’m sure she has deep hurt and pain beneath that smile, but to the world, she looks and acts as if there is nothing wrong.

While I don’t feel like I did a lot, sitting with her to acknowledge her pain and suffering meant so much to her. I pray that through me she was able to see the full extent of Jesus’ love for her.

So many outside of our little bubble believe everything is back to normal after the floods. We are far from that. While Samaritan’s Purse has pulled out of our parking lot, we have a projected 3-year, long-term plan to continue to work with people to make their homes safe and secure.

We are in winterization mode right now. Making sure that water pipes are well-insulated for the colder months ahead. Through the winter we’ll be able to work on the inside of homes and then in the spring and summer, there will be outside work to complete.

I drove past a road yesterday that is still completely destroyed and impassible. This is a reminder of the damage and the work that still is ahead of us.

Jesus had His work set before Him as well. Yes, this act of washing the disciples’ feet seemed small and unmeaningful. But when connected to the verse above, we know how very important our service to others really is. We are showing them the full extent of His love.

Please continue to pray for the folks here in Colorado who are still dealing with flood issues. Pray that God will give them the strength and courage to face today. Pray that they will not feel like they’ve been left behind and that there are still people here who want to help them. Pray that God will be glorified through it all.

Patterns and Directions

I’m working on a little project that is exciting to me. Several months ago on Facebook I offered to make something for anyone who wanted a hand-made item from me. The goal was to make something by my own hand within the year and get it to the person who wanted it. It could be anything, as long as I created it myself and I had a few friends who actually asked for something.

So time is slipping away on this and one of the people who requested something from me lives across the world. I decided it was time to get on this now.

I scoured Pinterest for just the right project and found these cute little snack bags to make. I went to my local fabric store and spent an hour mixing and matching fabric to make this project.

Then I looked at the directions for these bags. They are horrible! If you’ve read my writings on sewing pattern directions, you know I struggle with them anyway. The problem I’m having with these directions is there isn’t enough. They are vague. They kind of tell me what I’m to do, but not very clearly.

So what did I do? I stopped. Now I have to think about each step of this process so that I can have a clear direction in which to go.

Sometimes I feel this way about life. I run into a snafu and I seem to be confused or disoriented. I think I know what I’m doing and even seem to be moving along smoothly. But in reality, I’m lost.

Sometimes I’m not sure what plan or direction God has for my life. I look to His Word for guidance and direction, but just don’t see the clear path. And then at other times I can see exactly what God has planned for me.

But here’s what I’ve come to know for certain. God has it. He knows the plan. He knows the direction. As I draw closer to Him, the plan and direction for my life becomes clearer. When I accept the plan and direction God has set for me, then it all comes into focus. I can see and understand more.

God wants what is best for us. We see Scripture that tell us how much He loves us and what He desires for our lives. You may have Jeremiah 29:11 memorized. It’s a beautiful passage that speaks to God’s plan for us.

However, when we look at Jeremiah 29:12-13 (NIV), we see that we must do our part as well. “Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.” You see, we must seek God with all our heart. We must come to God and pray. Then God and His plan for our lives will become clear.

God shared a little tidbit with Joshua in His instructions before taking on the job of conquering the Promised Land. Listen to this. “Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.” (Joshua 1:8 – NIV)

As we are obedient to God and His commands, His plan and direction for our lives become much clearer. It’s in those moments that we too will be prosperous and successful.

I don’t know if I’ll ever figure out these little snack bags, but I do know that as I become an in-depth student of God’s Word I understand the directions in a way that I never thought possible. God enlightens me through His Spirit and I am able to accept the path that God has laid out for me.

I pray that if you have lost your way that you’ll run back to God’s Word to find direction for your life. Seek God with all your heart and you will find what you’re looking for. The path will become brighter. The directions will be clearer. All you need to do is look to the ultimate Pattern Writer.

“Jesus, Only Jesus” – Monday Musical Musings

After a Sunday filled with beautiful music, my mind continued to return to today’s melody. I love worship songs that continually bring our attention to the One who deserves our praise. And “Jesus, Only Jesus” is one such song.

IMAG1492There are several questions asked in this tune and the answer is always Jesus, only Jesus. We are reminded that Jesus, only Jesus is the answer to any question. Even the tough questions of this life. With Jesus’ help, guidance, and presence, we are able to make it through anything.

There are other great tunes of the past that bring this same conclusion to light. Think about “A Mighty Fortress is Our God.” There is a phrase in that song that states, “One little word shall fell him.” Jesus, only Jesus is the one who is able to defeat the evil one. Click here for to listen to “A Mighty Fortress is Our God.”

Another melody from the 1970’s stated, “Jesus is the Answer.” Regardless of what is happening in your life, Jesus is the answer. If you’d like to listen to this great song, click here.

When we come to understand that Jesus is all we need, that Jesus is enough, our lives we begin to live Jesus’ words in John 10:10 (NIV). “I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” Jesus, only Jesus is able to fill our lives beyond our wildest imagination.

It’s in that moment when we believe the words of this song. Jesus stands alone. I stand amazed.

The lyrics to this song are below. Read through them and hold on to their meaning throughout your day. Jesus wants to offer you this same abundant life. All you need to do is accept Him and say, “Jesus, Only Jesus” to live life abundantly.

Who has the power to raise the dead?
Who can save us from our sin?
He is our hope, our righteousness
Jesus, only Jesus

Who can make the blind to see?
Who holds the keys that set us free?
He paid it all to bring us peace
Jesus, only Jesus

Chorus:
Holy, King almighty Lord
Saints and angels all adore
I join with them and bow before
Jesus, only Jesus

Who can command the highest praise?
Who has the Name above all names?
You stand alone, I stand amazed
Jesus, only Jesus
(Chorus)

Bridge:
You will command the highest praise!
Yours is the Name above all names!
You stand alone, I stand amazed
Jesus, only Jesus!
Jesus, only Jesus!
(Chorus)[i]

A Hymn of Joy!

It’s Sunday morning! Time to get up and head to the house of the Lord!

CCSunday mornings are special (I pray they are for you as well). I understand King David’s words in Psalm 122:1 (NIV). “I rejoiced with those who said to me, ‘Let us go to the house of the Lord.’” There is great rejoicing within my soul when I can join others in worshiping God my Creator and Jesus my Redeemer. To be in God’s presence is exciting.

So today I pray that you’re excited about heading to the house of the Lord. You will be blessed beyond measure when you approach God’s throne.

And today is also the day of the week that you will read an older post that I’ve written. I pray that you’ll enjoy reading about lofty ideas. Have a wonderful day!

Lofty Ideas

Perhaps you’ve seen the television show where inventors present ideas to investors. These inventors seem to have the perfect solution to a problem and they’ve put together the perfect product. Sometimes these ideas are really good. Sometimes, not so much.

While I have only seen this show a few times, I am reminded that sometimes what we believe to be a great idea is a flop to others. I am reminded that we probably will not be successful at everything we try to do.

Why is it that sometimes great ideas end in failure? Why on some occasions are multiple attempts made before success? Why is there a saying, “If at first you don’t succeed; try, try again?” Why can’t an idea always work the first time?

Maybe the idea was too lofty…unattainable. Or maybe it really had no merit and wouldn’t work regardless of how many times you try. Perhaps the method isn’t suitable for the plan.

There are obviously many reasons a plan or idea won’t work on the first attempt.

The book of Proverbs has some great wisdom tidbits and Solomon gives us some great advice on planning. Maybe some of these verses might help with a situation you are in right now. Let’s take a look.

Proverbs 14:22 (NIV) “Do not those who plot evil go astray? But those who plan what is good find love and faithfulness.”

Proverbs 15:22 (NIV) “Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed.”

Proverbs 16:3 (NIV) “Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and your plans will succeed.”

Proverbs 19:21 (NIV) “Many are the plans in a man’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails.”

Proverbs 20:18 (NIV) “Make plans by seeking advice; if you wage war, obtain guidance.”

Proverbs 21:5 (NIV) “The plans of the diligent lead to profit as surely as haste leads to poverty.”

Proverbs 21:30 (NIV) “There is no wisdom, no insight, no plan that can succeed against the Lord.”

Yes, sometimes our plans may fail, but we know for certain that the plans of the Lord will never fail. 1 Chronicles 28:20 (NIV) gives us the advice David gave to his son Solomon. “Be strong and courageous, and do the work. Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord God, my God, is with you. He will not fail you or forsake you until all the work for the service of the temple of the Lord is finished.”

Yes, when God is in the middle of our plans, there will be success. It may not be the success we desired or hoped for, but it is the success God was seeking. And nothing can succeed against Him!

The Word of God

I’ve mentioned on many occasions how I love God’s Word. I’ve thought of Scripture as a treasure and held to it dearly.

DSC04486A while back, I read something somewhere to the effect that we, as Christians, give honor to Scripture far more than we should. Yes, we should read it. Yes, we should study and obey it. Yes, we should believe it’s the inerrant Word of God. But we should not “worship” the Bible.

So I took a step back and have considered my thoughts on the Bible and if I indeed had made God’s Word a thing of worship…an idol if you will.

But then I read a passage of Scripture that has allowed me to go back to my original way of thinking. Not because I thought it was right, but because God’s Word says its right.

King David loved God’s Word and the Book of Psalm is filled with David’s burning desire to know, understand and follow God’s Words. If David can revere Scripture as he did, surely that is God’s intention for my life as well.

The passage of scripture I referred to above is Psalm 119:6-16. I’ve read this passage in every translation and paraphrase to gain a better understanding of what God wants us to hear. I actually love the Contemporary English Version of this passage because there are some phrases that are a little different and it points out what is important. Take a look at Psalm 119:6-16 from the CEV.

“6 Thinking about your commands will keep me from doing some foolish thing.
7 I will do right and praise you by learning to respect your perfect laws.
8 I will obey all of them! Don’t turn your back on me.

9 Young people can live a clean life by obeying your word.
10 I worship you with all my heart. Don’t let me walk away from your commands.
11 I treasure your word above all else; it keeps me from sinning against you.
12 I praise you, Lord! Teach me your laws.
13 With my own mouth, I tell others the laws that you have spoken.
14 Obeying your instructions brings as much happiness as being rich.
15 I will study your teachings and follow your footsteps.
16 I will take pleasure in your laws and remember your words.”

Does this version help you to understand this passage a little better? What were some of the phrases or words you saw that caught your attention? Let me share a few that I liked.

I loved verses 6 and 9! My life has been filled with foolish things. But the most foolish thing I’ve ever done was ignore God’s Word.

Verse 11 is one you probably have memorized, especially if you know the pledge to the Christian flag. Perhaps you’ll recognize it as, “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.” (Psalm 119:11 – NIV) A small change in language really helps us to understand that God’s Word is to be treasured because it will help us to obey God’s commands.

And then Psalm 119:15 is a delight for those who desire a deeper understanding of the Bible. When we study God’s Word, we will follow in His footsteps. God has given us the example. We must follow.

There is so much more in this passage of Scripture. We could talk about holiness. We could talk about what’s hidden in our hearts besides God’s Word. We could talk about worship and praise. We could talk about sharing the Gospel with others. We could talk about happiness in God’s Kingdom. These ideas are all in this passage.

My conclusion today is that we are to treasure God’s Word. We are to hold it above all other books as our example for holy living. God calls us to listen to His Words. And I intend to listen intently. Learn wholeheartedly. Obey exclusively. And respect enthusiastically.

The Bible holds all that God wants mankind to know. God has preserved the Bible and it’s writings throughout the ages so that we might have guidelines to live by. I believe we should love, honor and obey God’s Word, for within its pages are “Words of Life” (1 John 1:1).
