A Little Bit on Love

I was able to journal this morning! What an exciting way to start the day. Now I don’t have my new journaling Bible yet, but I have a prayer journal that I’ve been using. So I added my little bit to it.

So I’m not all that creative. I see something I like (you know, on Pinterest) and use the best parts of an idea to come up with something. Today used a passage from the love chapter in the Bible, 1 Corinthians 13.

Here’s a reminder of what love is. “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.” (1 Corinthians 13:4-8a – NIV)

Earthly love may or may not be able to keep up with this definition of love. I believe it’s that word “always” that gets in the way. Why is that word there? Why can’t we just love when we want? Or when we like the person? Or when we’re in a good mood? Or when things are going smoothly? Well, because if you re-read this definition of love, there are no conditions. Love is all of these things all of the time.

But you and I know that this is easier said than done. You and I know that we’ve struggled with loving one another. And this is where the Holy Spirit comes into the picture. With His guidance and assistance, we are able to love one another in this biblical way.

Here is some more good news. Where earthly love fails, God’s love abounds. He is patient. He protects. He trusts. He hopes. He perseveres. Always! He never fails!

God will never fail you. He will always be there for you. Now that is what love is about.

I pray that this reminder of love will help you through your day. Make it a good one filled with love!

“Holy Spirit Rain Down” – Monday Musical Musings

Oh how I need God’s Holy Spirit today! Of course I need Him every day, but I could use an exceptional amount of His help today. I’m in a state of unrest and my heart and soul are uneasy. So when I heard this song this morning, I knew it was exactly what I needed.

IMAG1492I love the lyrics of this song. They are reminders of who the Holy Spirit and what He is able to do in my life. He is my Comforter. He is my Friend. What a blessing the Holy Spirit is.

And what I really love about this song are these reminders:

  1. I need a downpour!
  2. My heart is changeable by the Holy Spirit
  3. I can stand on God’s Word with the help of His Spirit
  4. God can do remarkable things through people who allow God’s Spirit to work through them
  5. God has got it…no need for me to meddle

I pray that this song will be powerful for you today as well. It’s just the reminder I needed!

“Holy Spirit Rain Down”

Holy Spirit, rain down, rain down

Oh, Comforter and Friend

How we need Your touch again

Holy Spirit, rain down, rain down

Let Your power fall

Let Your voice be heard

Come and change our hearts

As we stand on Your word

Holy Spirit, rain down

No eye has seen, no ear has heard

No mind can know what God has in store

So open up Heaven, open it wide[i]

Seek What?

You know this verse of Scripture. Matthew 6:33 (NIV) says, “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”

We typically recite this verse and remind ourselves of the importance of seeking God above all else. But the next verse is key to how we are to seek God’s kingdom.

“Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” (Matthew 6:34 – NIV)

Worry keeps us from seeking God’s kingdom and righteousness. Did you get that? I know it can be difficult to do, but as we make the decision not to worry, to give our day-do-day living to God, we are able to seek God’s kingdom and righteousness more effectively.

Phew! That’s one thing off my to-do list today!

Today’s repeat blog post is the second part to last week’s repeat. Praying that it is just what you need today. Make it a great day!

Study to Show

If you read my blog yesterday, you know that I’m going to give you some tips on how to study the Bible today. I may go overboard…if I do, please accept my apology.

Reading God’s Word and studying it are two different things. Yes, we must read the Bible, but when we go a little farther, dig a little deeper, we come to understand all of God’s message. And what a message it is!

To begin, we must understand that there is purpose for studying God’s Word. We find three in the New Testament. First, Bible study is useful for transformation. Romans 12:2 (NIV) says, “Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”

Bible study is also useful to equip us for service. We read in 2 Timothy 3:16-17 (NIV) that “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”

And finally it is useful to impact our world. Jesus mentioned in Matthew 5:13-16 that we are to be the salt of the earth and the light of the world. And the reason? “In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:16 – NIV)

After you understand the purpose of Bible study, the first thing I would say is to get a good study Bible. Now some of my peers may be cringing at this point. But new Bible studiers must start somewhere and I believe an excellent choice is Zondervan’s NIV Study Bible. The version is easy to read and the notes are pretty decent.

You may want to gather some items before beginning as well. You may need a diary or notebook to take notes of your study. You may need a few pens or pencils. I have found that Sanford makes a good dry pencil specifically designed for Bibles. They come in multiple colors and you can use them to highlight verses in your Bible.

Of course, this brings up the question of whether to write in your Bible or not. It really is up to you. There is nothing in Scripture that says we shouldn’t. But I have found that if I don’t write it down, I will forget it. So if I find something useful to write in my Bible for teaching purposes, I will write it or underline it in my Bible.

After you’ve gathered your materials, you then must choose a book to study. You might consider 1 Peter, 1 John or perhaps James. Once you’ve chosen your book, the studying begins.

Take some time to learn about the book, the author, and the setting of the book. This is where your new study Bible will come in handy. All of this information is available just before the book.

And ask yourself these questions: Who? What? When? Where? Why? The reporter questions. Find out these important elements and you’ll already have a better understanding of the book.

You’ll also find an outline of the book listed in this section of the study Bible. After you’ve studied the book, you may want to re-write the outline. Make a personal outline of the book.

Then you will want to read through the book several times. Get to know the style of the writer. Get an idea of what’s coming up. You also might consider listening to the book. I have a full set of audio CD’s of the Bible, and I love listening to what God is saying. I hear things that I don’t read. This is a valuable tool for me.

Then it’s time to begin the study. Read a verse or a section of your chosen book and see how this passage is to be interpreted. The content and context of the passage is important and relevant. Far too many have chosen a verse to back up a point where the verse was completely taken out of context. We must be careful to know how to use God’s Word.

Of course, if all of this Bible study doesn’t change us, what good is it? You’ll ask yourself that question several times if you chose to study the Book of James! There must be change, therefore there must be application.

After studying the book, ask how does it relate to my life? Where does this book specifically speak to me and my life?

Then meditate on what you’ve learned from studying this book. You may ask yourself, how might this knowledge effect change in my life? What does God want me to learn from this book?

Finally, practice what you’ve learned. As you implement these principles into your life, you will see the good in studying God’s Word and you’ll be ready to start again with another book.

I pray that you will become excited about studying Scripture. That a great desire will rise within you to seek the presence of God in His Word. For me, it’s what drives me. Learning something new from the Bible each day. Oh, and that’s an amazing thing about studying. You will never know it all. There is always more to learn.

If you have any questions about what you’ve read today, please don’t hesitate to contact me. I’d love to help you get started.

It’s not too late in the year to set a resolution. Maybe this year you might resolve to study several books of the Bible. It just might be the best resolution you’ve ever made.

Party Time!

It’s a super busy day. Thursday was my granddaughter Joy’s 9th birthday. It’s hard to believe she is turning into this beautiful young lady. So I’ve been preparing for her birthday party that will take place tomorrow.

birthdayI decided on a book themed party (I’ll share pictures after I get everything done) and have chosen some wonderful children’s stories to add to the mix.

After all this preparation, I’m kind of hoping that my next birthday party has a book theme as well. But I don’t want a party with popular books of today. I want it to be centered around the book…the Bible!

I envision vivid pictures of accounts from Scripture. The creation. Noah and the ark. Joshua at the walls of Jericho. Daniel in the lion’s den. The birth of Jesus. Jesus preaching by the Sea of Galilee. The resurrection of Jesus. The day of Pentecost. Paul before the Roman court. John’s vision from Revelation.

I can just imagine how wonderful it would be. Looking at the pictures and retelling the accounts of each scene. That would be a great birthday party.

What party theme would you chose?

Reinvention

I wonder how I miss things. Obvious things. Things that I see every single day. Things that I overlook. Things that are never seen.

mag glassTake for instance all of the templates in Microsoft Word. How have I missed seeing them? I open Word every day. Multiple times every day, and yet, I always click “create a new blank page.”

This may change.

In my version of Word, there are 36 folders filled with loads of templates. Some are quirky. Some are juvenile. But there are a few that I really like.

So here’s what’s been happening for me. With my new position as women’s ministry director, I’ve been creating documents for our ladies. Some are for advertising, some for email and others for cards or flyers to distribute. For all of these items, I’ve been coming up with my own ideas (now I will give credit to Pinterest where I find a lot of great ideas for some of my pieces). But I have to tell you, I’ve spent hours working on these items.

I think my job just got easier! Why? Because someone else has already put the time and effort and ability into creating beautiful templates that I can throw my information into! I don’t have to reinvent the wheel!

In our spiritual lives, we aren’t called to reinvent ourselves either. We are called to allow God’s Spirit to transform us. Romans 12:2 (NIV) reminds us, “Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”

You see, the world throws “templates” at us. The evil one wants us to fall in line with what everyone else is doing. He wants us to “conform.” We see over and over in the Old Testament how God’s children would mimic worship practices from other cultures. That’s what the devil desires for us as well.

But God’s Word tells us to “put off the old self” and to “put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.” (Ephesians 4:22-23 – NIV)

It may be easier to use the “template” of this world, but it certainly isn’t better.

Today, you may find yourself trying on “templates” of this world. But I can guarantee none of them will fit. None of them will satisfy. None of them will create the wholeness you desire.

Why? Because God is the only One who can fill the recesses of your heart. God is the only One who truly loves you and wants what is best for you. Only God.

So, why not allow God’s Spirit to do His work in your life? Allow Him to transform your life. Allow Him to recreate you in His righteousness and holiness. And then stand back. What a beautiful creation He has made. You!

Grace and peace be yours in abundance,
