It’s Time

I have been trying to figure out how to share this news with you; my dear friend, my loyal reader, my brother or sister in Christ. I’ve been struggling. I’ve shed some tears. I’ve listened to wise counsel. I’ve asked God’s guidance.

I’ve finally made my decision. Full Measure of Joy will be taking a ministry sabbatical. You may be asking what that means. So here’s a summary from Wheat Ridge Ministries.

It is a period of time to be set aside from the normal responsibilities of ministry. During this time, rest, renewal and study are the main areas of focus. For Wheat Ridge Ministries, their leaders are given the opportunity to seek excellence in their ministry, as well as their personal and spiritual life.

For me, a sabbatical means that I won’t write every single day. I’ll repost blogs that were written several years ago. This is the “set aside normal responsibilities” piece.

In place of writing daily, I’ll be spending time in extensive study. This period of study for me will help me to draw closer to God and deepen my relationship with Him. That fulfills the last portion of the sabbatical definition above.

Now, this is just for a period of time. Give me until the end of January and then I’ll be back live. If you recall, January 30 will be the 4th birthday of Full Measure of Joy. I’ll return for that special day.

Many blessings to you my friend. I’ll be seeing you.

Grace and peace be yours in abundance,

A New Day Dawning

Years ago, as a child, I had the opportunity to meet the Good Twins. They were traveling through Upstate New York and they stopped by our small congregation. I vividly remember their music filling the small church building where my father ministered.

Years later as a young mother and minster’s wife, I had the opportunity to meet them once again. They performed for yet another small congregation, but this time in Ohio. They hadn’t changed. Their music was just as delightful as I remembered and their kindness was unforgettable.

One of our daughters became ill during the concert and fell asleep in one of the pews. After tearing down their equipment and before leaving, they each stopped by to say goodbye to little miss Candace. It was a touching moment for us.

I recall one of their songs. I can hear it in my mind just as if they were standing here singing it this morning. Their voices clear and with harmonies that can only be found in siblings and even more so with twin brothers. Read through the lyrics of “New World Coming.”

There’s a New World Coming
And it’s just around the bend.
There’s a new world coming
This one’s coming to an end.

There’s a new voice calling
You can hear it if you try.
And it’s growing stronger
With each day that passes by.

There’s a brand new morning
Rising clear and sweet and free.
There’s a new day dawning
That belongs to you and me.

Yes a new world’s coming
The one we’ve had visions of.
Coming in peace, coming in joy, coming in love.[i]

Now you may recognize this song from another source, Mama Cass. While I am unsure of her intent, the Good Twins sang this song with Christ in mind. When we allow Jesus to be the ruler of our hearts, each day is a brand new day and the new world is definitely heaven.

And as a Christian, I know for certain that Jesus offers new life and a new world in peace, joy and love.

But these are not my words or my ideas. Let’s read through some of Jesus’ words as He spoke of such a life and world.

“Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life.” (John 3:14-15 – NIV)

“Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” (John 4:13-14 – NIV)

“I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty.” (John 6:35 – NIV)

“I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” (John 8:12b – NIV)

“If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (John 8:31b-32 – NIV)

“I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” (John 10:10b – NIV)

“I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die.” (John 11:25-26 – NIV)

“In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.” (John 14:2-4 – NIV)

“I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” (John 14:6 – NIV)

Of course this is just a partial list of what Jesus had to say. Just a sampling. But in this small group of verses we recognize that the blessed new day the Good Twins sang of only comes through Jesus. It is only through Him that we can believe the words to this song.

Well, today is a new day. The sun has risen and it looks to be a bright day here in Colorado. But as I look to this day on my spiritual journey, I can say it too is a bright day. For my today belongs to Jesus. He holds it in His hands.

This same assurance can belong to you today. It’s available to anyone who seeks Jesus and gives their life to Him. There is a new world coming and it is just around the bend. There is a new day dawning and it belongs to you and me. Don’t you think it’s about time to enjoy life with Jesus?

Enlightened

Have you paid much attention to the verse on the right side of my blog lately? It’s been a while since I’ve read it. I wanted to remind myself of why I write each day. This was a great reminder.

sunrise 1-28-15“I pray also that they eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and his incomparably great power for us who believe (Ephesians 1:18-19a – NIV)

Why did I choose this verse so many years ago? Because I wanted my readers to find God and be enlightened by His presence. I wanted to get out of the way and let God do His work through Full Measure of Joy.

For the most part, I believe this has been the case.

The next few verses in Ephesians were my guidelines for writing this blog every day. “That power is like the working of his mighty strength, which he exerted in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms.” (Ephesians 1:19b-20 – NIV)

That same mighty power that raised Jesus from the dead is what I’ve been able to draw upon each day to share my thoughts, my passions, my love for God and Jesus and how the Holy Spirit works in my life.

I needed to revisit these words again today. Maybe you do too. In any case, I pray that you dig deep into God’s Word and seek His wisdom as you are enlightened. I also pray that you utilize the power that is given to each believer.

Thanks for reading!

Grace and peace be yours in abundance,

Rocky at the Farm

What fun I had last night! I was able to go to Rocky’s annual event, Rocky at the Farm. Our church family and friends went to a local pumpkin farm and had some good, old-fashioned fun. It was a blast!

12010493_1152193128144023_31282777882307954_oI went to help out with face painting. I told them I was kind of artistic and so, I was wrangled. No, it wasn’t that bad.

I painted super hero logos, sports balls, princesses, butterflies and animals. And here’s the good news. I only made one little one cry (poor thing…I felt so bad, but her mom said she was fine…I can imagine she’ll never have her face painted again…such trauma!).

So apart from this one little incident, it was a great evening. The weather was perfect. There were lots of Rocky folks around. Add some blue-grass music, a fire pit, a cake walk and a corn maze and you have great mix for fun!

Part of being in God’s kingdom is community with fellow believers. Whether it’s in small groups or worship services or Bible study or sharing a meal or events like Rocky at the Farm, when believers get together, community flows.

We are given this example in the Book of Acts with the early church. “Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.” (Acts 2:46-47 – NIV)

Why would they do this? For community. For encouragement. For support. For their enjoyment. These are reasons we gather together today, isn’t it?

It’s no wonder we’re reminded in Hebrews 10:25 (NIV), “Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.”

It’s easy to get out of the habit of getting together with fellow believers. But just remember what it is like when you are together. Remember how encouraged you are by others. Remember the benefits. And then get back in community! Get to a worship service, small group or Bible study. Call that friend who you’ve been missing.

Get connected and stay connected. You really don’t want to miss all the fun do you?

Still Growing

I promised pictures of my book-themed birthday party for my granddaughter. So here they are.

Birthdays are an interesting beast. In the beginning, we can’t wait for them to roll around. Things are always better when we are one year older. Through our mid-life, we tend to acknowledge they even exist. And then once again, in our later years, we look forward to each birthday because it’s the sign that we are still alive and valuable in this world.

I wonder if that isn’t the way it is in our spiritual lives as well. At first, we are excited about our “newness of life.” We anticipate each new growth spurt and fill our minds with all things godly.

Then the mid-life years encroach upon that newness. It’s not that we want to dismiss our spiritual growth, but somehow, it isn’t as important. There are no new bits of information learned (maybe because we aren’t listening). There is no excitement in reading our Bible (maybe because we spend little time in our Bibles). It just seems that if things are going smoothly, why create any waves?

But then, something kicks in. We are once again excited about our walk with the Lord. We anticipate what new idea He will bring to light as we learn and grow and draw closer to Him. We can’t wait to wake up each morning to find that we are still alive and kicking in our journey with Jesus.

I don’t know where you are today, but I pray that you are at the polar ends of this scenario. I pray that you are finding great joy in your spiritual journey. Whether you are in a new relationship with Jesus or are deepening that relationship, I’m thankful that your relationship with Jesus is first and foremost in your life.

If you are in the middle somewhere, I pray that you will find the excitement again. I pray that you won’t let another day go by where you find yourself in a lukewarm relationship with Jesus (see Revelation 3:14-22). Wake up! Get excited! Find new life in Jesus!

Jesus said it this way. “I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5 – NIV)

That’s the way to return to an exciting relationship with Jesus. Spend time with Him. Allow Him to work in your life. Get reattached to the Vine. Allow new growth to happen. When you do, you’ll find excitement growing and you’ll begin to anticipate the next growth spurt.

Jesus desires a relationship with you. I pray that it is your greatest desire as well.

James 1:2-4 – Word of God Wednesday

We (as in my church, Rocky Mountain Christian Church) started a new message series this past Sunday from the book of James called No Excuses. There is small group material to go along with the message series and there are new groups launching all over our area this week.

???????????????????????????????I’m excited to join about 10 ladies this evening to begin this adventure together. What’s the topic for the first week? Trials of course! So I want to share the passage of Scripture that we will be working through this evening. Maybe you have some thoughts about this passage. If so, let me know!

“Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.” (James 1:2-4 – NIV)
